BROADWAY-19 Series No. 5: Yard & Flagon Acrylic on Canvas 16" x 12" . . . A common theme I've noticed in my paintings has been looking backwards/reflecting while also looking forward simultaneously. So I began the BROADWAY-19 series four months into the pandemic, when all of this was relatively fresh. But instead of portraying a "snapshot in time" as one might do -- illustrating the unique constraints/circumstances we find ourselves in -- I decided to reinvigorate & enliven these local establishments in a bright color palette. These paintings pay tribute to Broadway Avenue as a cornerstone of Saskatoon, but in painting them they also allow me to reflect on a variety of themes as we continue to forge ahead toward a post-pandemic era; creativity, community, and a sense of overall awareness.
