‘The story half-heartedly tried to make her look like a real person.’
Reviewer comments about how human the new Lara croft is and how narritvivly it disconnects to the game play. How he expects her to be more traumatised by having to kill hundreds of really bad people to survive.
Also comments on how he hoped that this game would take violence more seriously. Which the first game did quite effectively.
‘There’s a remarkable dissonance between Lara’s attitude in the story and the experience of playing the game’.
‘The game expects us to believe that she views her actions as some sort of grim necessity, all the while wanting us to have a blast, as it continually introduces new tools and new skills’
Character motivation shouldn’t limit Gameplay so that it’s less fun.
‘Suddenly the world isn’t this majestic, wonderous place anymore. Rather, its a place full of little golden things you can snag for your own personal gain’
Kinda the whole concept of ‘Tomb Raider’.
Gameplay feels powerful and satisfying. You don’t feel like someone fighting desperately to survive. You feel like someone very good at killing, and doesn’t hesitate to do it.
A lot of things were missed out of this game review. It was more of a character review, with a few points on the some other aspects of the game.

I have a problem with how Anita words her videos, she tends to say everything as if its proven fact rather than a theory for example:
‘Periodically, game developers may attempt to build a more flushed out relationship or emotional bond between Damsel’d character and the male protagonist. In the most decidedly patronizing examples depictions of female vulnerability are used for an easy way for writers to trigger an emotional reaction in male players.’
Why specifically has she said male players? Character development and creating emotional connections between characters is a good thing regardless of gender.
She points out in Dishonoured how the female characters have been reduced to a state of helplessness. In the scene that she chose to show, the protagonist is literally unable to do anything during the assassination of the empress.
Her example for Darkness 2 for the ‘Damsel in the Freezer trope’ Isn’t really a good example. You find out halfway through the game that the darkness captured her soul. Its only really a prevalent plot point towards the end of the game. The game itself is about these people who show up and start killing people who are important in your life, in order to push you into revealing your power so that they can steal it from you.
Originally when she set out to create the Tropes VS Women in Video games, she asked for $6000 to create 5 video’s. She recieved $158,922 for it and delivered only 3 of the video’s that she said she would video’s in the space of 3 years.
Although she has got some very good points, a few of which will make me a bit more considerate of certain tropes. I personally think she cherry picks her examples, completely removing context and then serves it to a community who hasn’t seen these examples in context which isn’t fair criticism.
