1.     Macro lenses are used for getting extremely close focus on subjects. These are often used to shoot product photography and show the product in great detail. They can vary in price but for the top end canon 100mm F2.8L the price is around £900 brand new.

2.     Close up filters work like reading glasses in that they allow the lens to focus more closely to the subject to make macro photography easier without requiring the use of a specific macro lens. They range in price from around £15-25 on average for a set

3.     An extension tube is a hollow tube that moves the lens further away from the sensor of the camera allowing the lens to focus much closer. There is no glass involved in an extension tube so they are very simple. The price range for extension tubes is as little as £15 going all the way to around £250 for an official canon extender.

4.     A reversing ring allows a lens to be inverted and mounted onto a DSLR. To do this it uses the filter thread on the front of the lens. They are on average about £25 but can vary as with all equipment.

5.     Bellows work the same as extension tubes in that they move the lens further away from the sensor or film. Bellows are normally used on large or medium format cameras. My own personal mamiya RB67 uses bellows to focus which allow for extremely close focus when shooting portraits. They can vary greatly from the cheapest being around £30 and the most expensive being around £700 for auto bellows

Felix Hernandez

The images by Felix Hernandez were immediately eye catching to me, so I chose to research him further. He mixes his photography with digital art to create very powerful images. He has created work for many high-profile brands such as TopGear magazine and Cadbury. His sets are all hand crafted. He is a graphic designer by trade and uses his dreams for a lot of his inspiration which I feel is very well communicated in his work. The thing that is especially interesting is seeing the BTS of his work as his sets are all handcrafted and so this is just as interesting as the finished image itself. His website contains many of his final images along with some of his BTS shots.

Erin Sullivan

Erin Sullivan is an outdoor photographer who challenged themselves to create adventures similar to the ones outside, indoors. They named this project Our Great Outdoors. I really liked this project as it is very similar to what many people have felt during the pandemic being stuck indoors. Some of these images are very minimalistic in their set design but still give a very strong impact. Being an outdoor and adventure photographer Erin has created the same style of images they would outside in the real world just shrunk down to a much smaller size which I really enjoy.

Birds eye view

Birds eye view shots are generally shots which are shot from above a scene from 90 – degree angle or from directly above the scene. They are used for landscapes and cityscapes very often and can give a good sense of scale and establish setting. These shots can be as simple as climbing a ladder to get over your subject or as complex as being from a helicopter or hot air balloon

Eye level

Eye level photography is when the camera is placed at the same height as the eyes of the subject. It does not require the subject to be looking at the camera for the shot to be considered eye level. These shots are often used in wildlife photography to let the view look directly into the eyes of the animal being photographed.

Worms eye view

Worms eye shots are shot from below a subject as if from the perspective of a worm, hence the name. These shots are the opposite of birds eye view and are very often used to make the subject look larger than life and all powerful

POV

Point of view photography is where the viewer sees from the perspective of a character in the narrative. This is very often used in horror films from the perspective of the killer

Narrative Caption: The image depicts small figures sat atop the of a games console. The characters are sitting away from each other to convey a deeper message. There is also a game being played on the console which I have also used to convey something as you cannot clearly see what is being displayed and I feel that many people throughout the course of the last year haven’t been able to view the full picture of everything going on in their lives.

For my initial shoot I chose to select an object that had something to do with lockdown and how I have spent the majority of the time over the last year.
