“Thank you for the glowing review, Professor Hidalgo.” He had to assume being called pathetic was supposed to be affectionate, in that funny way of hers.

“I’d be happy to spend Christmas with you, but you should know I don’t— celebrate it.”

It was not. She really thinks this man needs help. But she also did not mean to be cruel about it. Xóchitl is just, unfortunately, a very strict Mexican woman with immense mom energy.

Ah, this woman… he liked this woman. She was a good woman. She even got a smile! “I think there’d need to be some sunlight to help with the paleness issue. I’m outside plenty…”

“I don’t mind being alone too much, loneliness has kind of always been a constant for me…” god, you sound pathetic sometimes, Remus. “I like being at the school.”

“Obviously.” Night air is nice, but sunlight just feels good.

“Maybe that’s why I get sick so often.” Canned laughter. An inside joke between himself and the parasitic wolf that sometimes shares his skin. He would point out that he doesn’t celebrate Christmas, but who has the energy for that? “That’s very kind of you, Xochitl, thank you.”

His fellow professor was avoiding questions, but he couldn’t judge. He was a master of avoiding questions. “Typically I would stay here over break, but I was convinced to go spend Christmas with the Potter’s, once.”

“You need to eat more vegetables.” It’s amazing how quickly she starts sounding like a mother. “And get outside more, you’re so pale.” Tsk tsk.

“Well…blue might be nice. Or something. But I don’t know how much say I have over the, Ah…decor. As far as I can tell, these were the same curtains that Professor Dumont had when she taught defense when I was a student.” He recalled seeing them, once, when he’d been in her office for some forgotten reason. “So I can’t say I believe they upgrade things here all too often.”

Besides, where was he going to get new curtains from?

“I can’t remember if you’d usually stay, back when we were younger… do you have people you typically spend winter holiday with?”

“They’re probably dust and mold filled.” Xóchitl tuts, already moving her wand around to remove them from the rod, “I will get you new curtains.” Because it seems like all the men around her cannot properly take care of themselves, “Consider it a little Christmas gift from me.”

It would be nice, after all.

“Isn’t that the point of curtains…?” Leave him, he’s hungover. Well, no, he isn’t, but Merlin did he wish he were simply hungover. Regardless, he was grateful for Xochitl and her gift of soup.
