We've been quiet about what actually happens inside The Mound. Today, that changes.
Art Director Edmundo Bordeu takes you through a full gameplay session of The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu: no cuts, no safety net. Just the jungle, the monsters, and the slow unraveling of everything you thought you could trust.
The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu | The Captain's Bargain: Choosing Your Contract
Ahoy, Explorers.
Before you step into the suffocating embrace of the jungle, you must first stand before the Captain in the relative sanity of the Galleon. Here, you will not be given orders, but a choice. A contract. Each one is a pact, a promise of reward for a task that will test your greed, your courage, and your trust in those beside you.
But be warned: not all bargains are equal, and every choice has its price.
The Objective - What Must Be Paid
Every contract begins with a demand. The Captain’s requirements are one thing that separates a successful expedition from a fruitless descent into horror. Sometimes, your goal will be one of pure value: "Bring at least 800 worth of value" in treasures and relics. Other times, the demand will be specific: a list of resources the jungle holds, such as "15 mushrooms, 5 logs, and 2 small animals."
Fulfilling this objective is your primary goal. Everything else is secondary to survival.
The Tools - A Shared Burden
The Captain provides, but he is not generous. Each contract comes with a selection of equipment for your party - a handful of weapons, a few precious supplies, a single lamp against the oppressive dark. These are not individual loadouts; they are a shared arsenal.
Will you entrust the only arquebus to the marksman with the steadiest hand? Who carries the lantern when the shadows begin to crawl? Here, trust is a resource as valuable as ammunition and just as easily spent.
The Reward - Riches for the Damned
No risk is without its potential reward. Before you sign your name to the ledger, you will see what awaits you upon a successful return: Experience to sharpen your skills, and Tokens to spend at the occult shop. These are no mere coins. They are the currency of the damned, used to acquire artifacts that blur the line between salvation and madness.
With them, you can obtain powerful support items like The Medallion to uncover hidden treasures, or even forbidden relics like the Mask of Nyarlathotep, which offers a terrifying form of protection. The greater the risk, the greater the reward, and the closer you step towards the horrors you seek to exploit.
So, study the contracts carefully. Weigh the objectives, consider the tools you'll have to share, and stare long at the prize. The choice is yours. What are you willing to risk for a chance at forbidden glory?
Stay sharp. The jungle is waiting.

The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu | Pack for the Unknown #2
Not every expedition succeeds through force alone.
Some require patience. Others demand misdirection - and a willingness to step closer to the enemy than comfort allows.
This second loadout is designed around controlled aggression and infiltration, giving one squad member the tools to create openings while others capitalize on them.
It’s a kit that rewards coordination… and punishes hesitation.
The Francesca Axe is not a weapon you throw casually. It is a weapon of precision.
Its weight demands a careful throw, and damage depends on how it lands. A well-placed strike can shift an encounter, while a misjudged throw leaves you exposed. Ideal for players who time their actions to create pressure or finish fights efficiently.
The crossbow brings control to the squad.
It lets players apply pressure at range. Each shot is deliberate, covering allies or punishing distracted enemies. Unlike a traditional bow, bolts can pierce armor at very close range — a historically accurate trait that rewards careful positioning. It’s not about speed - it’s about setting the pace of the fight and controlling the battlefield.
The most unsettling piece of this loadout is not a weapon at all.
The Mask of Nyarlathotep allows its wearer to move among the Y’m-bhi unnoticed - provided it’s donned before attention is drawn. For a time, the undead will accept you as one of their own.
But this deception comes at a cost.
Wearing the mask gnaws at the mind, inflicting a creeping dread that leaves the wearer vulnerable if violence erupts. Worse still, the illusion isn’t selective: to your allies, you may look no different from the creatures you’re trying to fool. In the chaos of a fight, hesitation - or a trigger pulled too fast - can be fatal.
The mask is a tool for infiltration, scouting, and positioning… but it demands absolute trust from the squad.
Choose carefully. Some paths offer power… but ask for something in return.

The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu | The Y’m-bhi: Killing isn’t enough
They don’t rush you. They watch. They wait. Meet the Y’m-bhi - sentries of the jungle, and one of the many reasons every expedition feels unpredictable.
In The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu, not every enemy attacks on sight.
The Y’m-bhi - inspired by their appearance in The Mound - are reanimated bodies bound to the jungle, and they behave less like mindless undead and more like sentries.
When a Y’m-bhi spots players, it often probes instead of attacking. It watches, tests distance, and builds stress. During these moments, you may hear fragments of the human still trapped inside (broken warnings urging you to flee).
Using a crucifix reveals their stress level through the glow of their eyes, giving squads a chance to anticipate what comes next.
But when stress peaks, they don’t always charge.
Sometimes, they retreat into the forest, repositioning for an ambush when players move on.
Y’m-bhi are dangerous in close combat:
They can parry melee attacks, sometimes disarming players.
Headshots aren’t always fatal - even devastating ones.
Some can deploy tentacles to pin a player, forcing allies to intervene.
Turning your back is risky. If you flee, they may enter a pursuit state, becoming slightly faster than you through the jungle.
Light can briefly blind Y’m-bhi in darkness - unless they carry light of their own. Some wield oil lamps, which they may use to set themselves ablaze and charge players in flames.
And killing one doesn’t always end the threat.
In certain cases, the forest will attempt to bring the body back, reanimating what players thought was dealt with.
The Y’m-bhi aren’t just enemies to defeat - they’re pressure points that test awareness, teamwork, and restraint.
And they’re only one of many dangers waiting beneath the canopy.

The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu | Every expedition needs a plan… and the right equipment to carry it out. Take a look at how different tools can shape your role in the expedition!
Packing for the Unknown #1
An exclusive look at three essential tools in The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu.
As we continue shaping our title, we want to start giving you a closer look at the equipment you will be able to rely on to successfully complete your contracts. Throughout development, we’ll be showcasing different loadouts: each highlighting a particular playstyle and the kind of role it can create within a team.
Today’s trio is a glimpse into a setup meant for slow, deliberate progress through hostile terrain: cautious scouting, controlled engagements, and a focus on locating what lies hidden beneath the canopy. This isn’t the only way to play, but for the right expedition, it can make the difference between discovery and disappearance.
This first setup focuses on support and precision: a player who can keep their allies safe, shed light on threats, and uncover what lies buried beneath the jungle’s canopy.
The matchlock arquebus is the most iconic firearm in The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu - a weapon born from fire, powder, and faith. It delivers a single, devastating shot capable of piercing armor at close range, but every trigger pull comes with risk.
Reloading takes time (time you may not have) so even the best soldiers are exposed between volleys. The arquebus can also misfire, especially when weathered or poorly maintained, forcing you to reload powder into the pan before trying again.
And then there’s the weather itself.
The weapon’s smouldering fuse - a lifeline for ignition - is extinguished under rain. When the skies weep, the arquebus falls silent unless you find shelter to reload and fire.
Despite its flaws, this firearm rewards precision, discipline, and timing. A perfect shot can save a squad. A poorly timed reload can doom it.
(The arquebus was modelled in detail based on real 16th-century mechanisms, down to the moving parts and reload steps.)
The oil lamp isn’t just a light source: it’s a reliable companion against the jungle’s unnatural dark. Unlike the torch, it won’t flicker or die under the rain, and its steady glow offers players a brief sense of control amid the chaos.
But the lamp’s true value goes beyond illumination. Some of the creatures haunting the jungle are sensitive to light, weakening under its glare. In these moments, cooperation becomes key: which one of will hold the lamp steady, while another delivers the finishing strike
It’s also a weapon of desperation: you can throw your lamp to ignite a small burst of flame, sacrificing sight for survival. And sometimes, the jungle’s horrors imitate the living: the Y’mi-bhi, undead figures wandering the undergrowth, often carry lamps of their own… only to set themselves ablaze and charge at intruders.
The lamp doesn’t make you safer, it simply helps you see what’s about to test your sanity.
From the occult shop roster comes the medallion, an artifact etched with the twin visages of Cthulhu and Yig: two cosmic forces bound by opposition: Tulu and Yig, Day and Night, Earth and Sky.
To use it, the player must strike the medallion, briefly activating it. The impact sends a pulse through the forest, an audible sound that attracts unwanted attention while also agitating the environment itself. When active, faint specks of light reveal hidden treasures buried deep in the jungle.
These relics are composed of a mysterious substance known as Tulu-metal, whose magnetism resonates with the medallion alone. But the gift of guidance comes with its own curse: he who seeks, finds. But he who seeks may also be found.
The medallion represents the balance between curiosity and caution - between faith in the unknown and the price of discovery.
This is just the first of many combinations we’ll reveal. Future loadouts will be tailored to different maps, threats, and playstyles: from coordinated team pushes to tense, deliberate navigation of the jungle and high-risk, high-reward treasure runs. The right loadout won’t guarantee your safety… but it may buy you a few precious moments to survive.
Stay tuned… there’s much more to uncover.

The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu | Crafting the Jungle: an exclusive First Look
In The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu, the forest isn’t just a backdrop: it’s your first enemy.
These in-game shots are still work in progress, but they already hint at the tension you’ll face: dense vegetation, unnatural silence, and paths that seem to shift around you. This is not a space to explore. It’s a space to survive.
The environment itself is hostile, and every detail matters:
• Dense vegetation and branches slow your movement. You can cut through with a machete, but too much noise risks drawing out hidden creatures.
• Dense fog limits your vision, and rain threatens your survival in more ways than one. A soaked fuse means your gunpowder weapons won’t fire when you need them most.
• Caves and structures might feel like the last place you want to enter, but they are where you are most likely to find treasure, and also offer a small advantage: at least inside, you can keep your gunpowder dry.
Here, survival means weighing every choice - sometimes the danger you see isn’t as bad as the danger you might awaken if you choose to use your firearms.
The team drew from real-world inspirations, especially the Valdivian temperate rainforest of South America: an ecosystem that is ancient, wet, and claustrophobic.
But reality is only part of the story, the environment is also twisted with Lovecraftian elements, as the inhabitants of the underworld can alter life to their will.
“...The K'nyanians had attained immortality and subjugated other races before them, and had the technology to biologically modify other life-forms”
The jungle becomes an ideal hunting ground, a camouflage for ancient predators.
There are things that crawl through the roots, and even more ancient things beneath, things you are never meant to encounter, if you want to survive.

I like to think that Kax-Teh could have shown at least minimal concern for Pseudo. But I definitely don't like the idea of him being his full-time father. Since the release of the new Zeno C., I have fallen even more in love with Kax-Teh and would like to know more not only about him, but also about his relationship with Pseudo. I'm also interested to know how things are going with the other golems, especially the southern one.
