She couldn’t shake off how strange it felt to have her mistakes brushed away as she learned like this. She hadn’t been allowed to make mistakes since Kaneki had helped her learn to read, and that was… lifetimes ago. Aogiri didn’t tolerate mistakes. And they certainly didn’t count everything that she gave her best towards as a success, the way this kid did. “Thank you.” Her words came out quieter than she had intended, but she didn’t repeat them.
She couldn’t help but let out a quiet giggle when the other’s throw curved instead of flying straight. It was a cool throw, but obviously not what the other had intended. “So, do you pitch it like that so the batter thinks it’s going one way, and then goes another?” At least she knew that the pitcher threw to the batter. Not much more than that, though. “It looks useful strategically, but not exactly ideal for a game of catch.”
` ⇢「 ♦ 」» The soft ‘thank you’ slightly confused him, but he didn’t put too much thought in it. The giggle from the young maiden immediately prompted him to feel embarrassed. Flustered by his own error, a tiny and nervous laugh escaped from him as he rubbed the back of his head. Why did it have to curve towards that direction?! Still, it looked like she managed to impress her with his speciality, the moving ball.
“Y - Yeah! Exactly! It’s my speciality!” He boldly proclaimed it in a voice full of pride.” My throws are known to fly everywhere, making it almost impossible for the batters to hit. They don’t know where it flies at all.” Eijun flashed her a smile, attempting to appear cool after speaking about his skills. “Yeah. Haha. It’s why playing catch with me is a little difficult.” After he picked the ball up, he realized that he didn’t know her name yet. “What’s your name?”
—- [ ☆ ] THE MERE MENTION OF a baseball field gets his gears turning. His foot stops its beat to plant itself flat on the floor next to the other– his eyes akin, practically glued to steady himself with what he’s just heard. Then he realizes the fault: that he’s all too excited.
A hasty retreat welcomed by the slow pat of his palm on the nape of his neck. A low, low whistle.
[ ✭ ] “A baseball field? Th… That sounds cool. I play baseball. I guess.” Smooth. “I’ll tag along, ‘cause I ain’t got anything planned for today anyway. I’ve got a friend who likes baseball, y’know.”
` ⇢「 ♦ 」» Encountering a baseball player on the train was not part of his plan, but he wasn’t complaining since he was on the lookout for other baseball enthusiasts like him. Hearing his words made his heart soar with joy and excitement wash all over his face. “Really? What position do you play?! I’m a pitcher!” A grin appeared on his face when the other made a decision to assist him on his search. “Perfect. The two of us can easily find a baseball field.”

I can make friends with a smile, right?
That’s what Erika always believes, at least. Maybe her smiles are awkward, sometimes, but she tries hard to make people like her and the person she’s just run into is no exception.
She doesn’t speak with every person she meets, of course, but this time she’d been so caught up watching him that she’s sure he’s noticed. He was throwing balls… in that funny arc… she was pretty sure it was baseball… maybe. It’d be rude to scurry off now, wouldn’t it? And with one encounter already tallied as a crime (not that she was caught) she’s much more inclined to stay on people’s good sides.
“Hi!” she beams from ear to ear right after, “I was just watching you; it was interesting.” she admits honestly. “But… isn’t that a game you should play with somebody? If you’d like I could use the bat! I’m pretty good, if I do say so myself!” There’s a slight lie there; she’s really not great with sports at all, but she really wants to make a good impression, so if she acts like there some kind of common ground, it’d spark conversation, right?
` ⇢「 ♦ 」» Stomping his foot on the ground, he threw the ball towards the net before letting out a yell filled with zest and energy. “Osh!” A victorious smile etched across his lips as he ran towards the ball rolling on the ground. That was a great throw! He was certain it would have gotten him what every pitcher wants: a strike. If only his catchers were here to see his pitches. Eijun had yet to gather the members needed for a baseball team, but it didn’t make a difference to him. Nothing could prevent him from practicing and aiming to be the best.
Turning to glance at the source of the voice, he blinked when he noticed a girl around his age was initiating a conversation. Hearing her call his pitching interested immediately fuelled his ego, causing a smile to blossom on his face. A light blush overshadowed his cheeks. Placing a hand behind his head, he lightly scratched the back of his head in a sheepish way. “You think so? Haha. Thanks.” Golden eyes lit up when she mentioned she was a baseball player. Jackpot! Practicing with a real human was always better than practicing with a net. “Oh!! What position do you play?”

❥ Crush
` ⇢「 ♦ 」» “Why does everyone think I have one... I don’t have one and I’m not interested in dating. I just want to get better at pitching.”
“I hope so,” she replied to his reassurance, still feeling doubtful. All she knew about baseball was that a bat was supposed to be involved somehow, and that she didn’t see one around here. But maybe with two people, it was supposed to be more casual? She wasn’t exactly going to ask about it; a human would probably at least know that much, even one that didn’t play the sport, and there was no reason to draw suspicion to herself. Don’t worry about messing up, the other said. But wouldn’t it be less fun for him if she was bad at it? No, she’d have to do her best and hope that was good enough. The other was being kind enough to let her play; she wouldn’t want to ruin the game for him.
Of course, being a few inches from busting his knee cap probably counted as ruining the game. “I’m sorry, I could have really hurt your leg—I guess I should learn how to aim before I try to throw it hard…” She hadn’t understood that part of his explanation; all she knew was that she was supposed to let go of the ball at a certain time, and that she had no idea when that was. Whatever she had just done was obviously not correct. She frowned back at the other’s bright smile, puzzled. “You don’t have to lie to me to try to be nice; it was a bad throw. They’ll get better with practice, but that one wasn’t any good.”
` ⇢「 ♦ 」» "Don’t worry about it!” He flashed her a reassuring smile before giving her a thumbs up, not the slightest bit annoyed or phased by her error. There was no way he could get angry at someone who didn’t know anything about baseball, but was eager to learn more. Not to mention, it was his fault for not teaching her how to aim first. “Yeah. I should have taught you how to aim first. It slipped my mind.” He scratched the back of his head, a sheepish smile blossoming on his face. Whoops. If his senpai were here, then they would definitely scold him for committing such a ridiculous mistake.
“It was a good throw.” There wasn’t a tinge of deceit in his tone. “You put all of your heart in it and gave it your best. That’s what matters.” As a pitcher, he could tell she genuinely did her best; and that was all that mattered to him. “But you are right. You’ll get much better. Now here is how you throw. I’m going to throw straight and show you how it’s done.” A confident smirk appeared on his face as he pulled his arm back and threw the ball. Instead of flying straight, it curved to the left and landed on a patch of grass nearby. Silence. “... T - That is called a moving ball. A type of pitch I’m skilled at. Ha - hahaha!” He just laughed his mistake off. His biggest weakness was his lack of control after all.
She couldn’t help the small laugh that left her lips at his comment; of course he wasn’t scared, why would he be? Smiling almost to herself, when he properly introduced himself Aoi felt–it vaguely felt like butterflies, the kind she got before a match, the little bubbling of excitement that was always present during those time. ❝ Well I’m sorry for startling you, ❞ she added on, a sheepish look upon her face. ❝ I knocked on the door but no one answered so I just assumed no one was here yet. But I hope we can get along! ❞
As she saw him scurry back to the table to retrieve the ball, at his little (probably self-directed) comment, Aoi’s eyes lit up like fireworks. So he liked sports too? This was promising–she had hoped that her partner would have had something in common with her but this was nearly the jackpot, the only way it could have gotten better was if he was a swimmer instead of a baseball player. Beggars couldn’t be choosers however, Aoi was content (and still excited) but what was given to her. ❝ Ah! Do you play baseball? So do I! ❞ she chirped, bouncing next to him. ❝ What position do you play? Or are you one of those guys who play a little bit of everything? ❞
` ⇢「 ♦ 」» Even though they had only met a few minutes ago, he had a feeling that he would get along with her. She seemed to be friendly and easy to talk to, which was a relief to Eijun. The last thing he wanted was to be paired up with a difficult individual. The second she mentioned that she was a baseball player, his golden eyes lit up and a bright smile blossomed on his face. Jackpot! His partner was someone who knew about baseball! He spoke in a tone full of excitement and glee. Talking about the sport he lived for always brought him incredible joy. "I’m a pitcher!” Eijun spoke in a tone laced with pride. “I can play other positions as well, but the mound is the place I want to be at the most.”
This situation was perfect. He could play catch with her or she could be his batter! Either way, he was extremely pleased to encounter someone who had baseball knowledge. “What position do you play? Were you part of a school team? Did you know that Tsuyoshi Shinjo was the first Japanese player to play in an American team?” His eyes sparkled as he inched closer to her, bombarding her with questions.
