An's relationship with Vivid Street is actually far more complex than many people give it credit for.
For all they talk about how precious An is to them, Vivid Street actually harmed An instead of protect her. While Vivid Street did give her encouragement and support, they also distorted her perception of love. An loved RADder and Vivid Street as she grew up there and viewed them as family, and she was told that Vivid Street also loved her. However, RADder would constantly abandon her if a work/Vivid Street emergency came up, breaking their promises to spend time with her, as seen in Vivid Old Tale. Before Light Up the Fire, An fully believed that Nagi left for America without a word because of a good career opportunity. This led An to think that people would inevitably leave her no matter how much they said they loved her, which ended up affecting her other relationships. When they first became partners, An had conflicting feelings about Kohane's growth. She loves Kohane and knows Kohane loves her as well, yet because of her warped sense of love and abandonment issues, she believed Kohane would eventually leave her if her singing wasn't good enough to make her heart pound, just like Nagi did.
Even though Vivid Street lied about Nagi's death to respect her last wishes, they ultimately betrayed An and broke her trust. Even if An understood their reasoning, they subconsciously had an effect on herβthe idea that people who love her will still break her trust was further reinforced in her mind. Although Kohane trusts An completely, this trust was not fully reciprocated by An. An believes in Kohane's ability to sing; that is true. However, An didn't trust her as a person, thus she intentionally hid her feelings of insecurity from Kohane until Whip the Wimp Girl. She feared that Kohane would feel disappointed if she revealed her uncool side, because she wants Kohane, more than anyone else, to look up to her. She's unable to stop herself from feeling that way despite knowing Kohane would never think something like that.
π§: I didn't want you to know that I've been feeling this way, Kohane. I was afraid that you'd feel disappointed after seeing how lame I really am...
πΉ: ...! No, I'd never!
π§: I know. You'd never feel that way about me. But... I can't stop myself from feeling scared.
(Whip the Wimp Girl, chapter 6)
Perhaps An was also afraid that after telling Kohane the truth, Kohane would promise to never leave her but end up breaking that promise in the future because that was what happened in the past (and as the saying goes history repeats itself), thus she kept it a secret pre Whip the Wimp Girl.
In the end, An was able to overcome her fear because her love for Kohane is different from that for RADder and Vivid Street. After her singing battle with Kohane, An realized that they will continue chasing after each other no matter what happens, because they're partners (who are also rivals in a way). They'll always have the desire to make their partner's heart pound with their singing to drive them forward. As for Vivid Street, while An still loves them, she will likely never be able to fully forgive them for lying.
i'd like to add this from haruka's street-style idol side story 1 too if you don't mind
OP you are absolutely correct thank you for bringing this up
In general I think the Vivid Street adults are just highly irresponsible. RADder chose to prioritize work commitments and would abandon and break their promises with An, who was a literal child, if work emergencies came up. Nagi's final wish was for Vivid Street to lie and hide her death from An, because she was more worried about An giving up on singing if she knew the truth, rather than the emotional damage it would do to her after knowing that the people she loved betrayed her trust and she never got the chance to say goodbye to one of the most important people in her life. While I understand the rest of the locals agreed mainly to honour Nagi's final wish, that doesn't make what they did any more okay, because they really should have known better.
This does explain why An and the rest of VBS seem extremely focused on their goals, always trying to reach higher and higher. Singing/music always being the first priority is yet another part of Vivid Street culture, and being goal oriented is a product of idolizing RADder. I know many people say An moved on from the news of Nagi's death too quickly in Light Up the Fire, but that's actually how VBS has always workedβlooking ahead at the next event/goal no matter what setbacks they face.
Also, I know this isn't OP's main point but I do think that the reason why An wasn't particularly affected by Haruka "leaving" is because she isn't her partner. For friends, it's pretty natural to have different dreams, which means parting ways eventually. But with a partner, there is an idea of "forever", chasing the same dream together, which made the thought of Kohane leaving so scary for An.
Do you ever think about how the existence of SEKAI is Fate. How the creation of SEKAI predetermined the formation of every unit. When Leo/need parted ways in junior high school, school sekai was created with virtual singers who played band instruments. More more jump was always destined to meet on the rooftop of Miyajou. Even before Kohane knew anything about rad weekend, she was meant to be part of vbs because of Anβs desire for a partner. Wxs Miku + Kaito and Nightcord Miku searched for kindred spirits to help their respective sekai owners, allowing wxs to meet in PXL and Nightcord to meet online. I think about it often.
Thinking about vbs main story when Akito met Kohane for the first time and immediately assumed she didn't have resolve... but he ended up being right about that. Kohane never had a dream, so she agreed to team up with An only because she liked the feeling of singing with her and wanted to try something new, not because she truly wanted to surpass rad weekend. The power cut incident made Kohane realise that she actually wanted to keep singing with An no matter what, that's why she found the resolve she lacked before. She also said they'd surpass rad weekend knowing nothing about it aside from the fact that it's a "legendary event" because that's An's dream, and to keep singing with her, she had to have the same dream. That's why Legend Still Vivid was a necessary event for her; she got a more concrete idea of what rad weekend truly was like which fueled her desire to surpass it.
Kohane's dream turned from just "I want to sing with An" to "I want to sing with An and surpass rad weekend", while An's dream turned from just "I want to surpass rad weekend" to "I want to surpass rad weekend and sing with Kohane forever". It's interesting to see their goals progress from two opposite ends and meet in the middle from main story -> wtwg
