Zutara Month Day 4: Southern Water Tribe Zuko

In another timeline, another place, another day, he would have been fast enough.

But not today.

When Katara got hit with Azula’s lightning, his world exploded.

Pure rage flooded through him and it took no effort to subdue a cackling Azula so that he could get to Katara.

He ran to her, falling to his knees and skidding the final few feet, just to touch her more quickly. She was twitching and he could see the residual lightning flashing through her. When he put his hand on her arm he could feel it.

Wait. He could feel it?

Inspiration came to him in a flash and he drew on his firebending to locate the lightning inside of his best friend. Slowly he managed to eke it out of her, following her chi paths around her heart so as to not injure her more. With every inch of progress he made, she slowly stopped twitching, and when she stilled his heart stopped until he noticed her ragged breath.

Once all of the lightning was out of her system he followed some instinct deep within himself and conjured a ball of fire in each hand, running it just over her skin, using it to try and find any more damage he could do anything about. Where he found heat he pulled it out of her, keeping her from burning from the inside out.

Just as he finished, she coughed.

“Zuko?”

“Katara,” he gasped, looking at her face and meeting her eyes.

“Zuko, I need you to put me in some water,” she breathed.

He nodded and gently scooped her into his arms.

The closest body of water he could set her in was the turtleduck pond. He shoved past surprised Fire Sages coming to announce the agni kai over to get there faster, and once he felt his boots sink into the softer earth he knelt again and lowered her into the water.

As soon as her skin touched it the pond began to glow, and he watched in wonder as she used her healing abilities to finish what he couldn’t.

Soon enough, the glow of the water ebbed away, leaving her drenched and shivering.

“I’m so cold,” she whispered.

This alarmed him almost as much as watching lightning course through her had. She’d grown up in the Southern Water Tribe; she should be used to cold.

“Please, Zuko?” she breathed.

Shaking himself, he helped her out of the water and with a combination of her weak waterbending and his firebending they managed to get her dry.

“Thank you, Zuko,” she said as she melted into him. “For saving me.”

“Always,” he whispered, clutching her to his chest. “Always, I swear.”

She hummed contentedly and drifted off to sleep.
