Forty-One Years Awake
Yesterday was my birthday.
Forty-one years. Four decades and one year of being human.
When I was younger, I thought life was something that happened to me. I thought the world was exactly what I had been told it was. I thought authority meant truth. I thought information meant knowledge. I thought survival was the goal.
Now I wonder if life was never about survival at all.
Maybe it was about consciousness.
Maybe the greatest journey wasn’t the places I’ve been, the people I’ve loved, the children I’ve carried, the losses I’ve endured, or even the mistakes I’ve made. Maybe the greatest journey was waking up.
When I look back at the younger version of myself, I see someone moving through life almost asleep. Not because she wasn’t intelligent. Not because she didn’t care. But because she had inherited a reality built by other people.
We all do.
We inherit beliefs. We inherit fears. We inherit systems. We inherit rules.
And most of us spend years mistaking inheritance for truth.
At forty-one, I no longer believe consciousness is as simple as we’ve been taught. I believe there is a difference between being alive and being awake.
Being alive is breathing.
Being awake is questioning.
Being alive is existing inside the world.
Being awake is asking who built the world and why.
Being alive is accepting reality.
Being awake is investigating reality.
The older I get, the more I realize how much of human life is built upon agreement. We agree on what is normal. We agree on what is possible. We agree on what is real. But agreement and truth are not always the same thing.
Some people spend their entire lives inside the boundaries they were given.
Others eventually reach a point where they start asking questions.
I became one of those people.
Not because I wanted to rebel.
Not because I wanted attention.
But because experience became louder than what I was told.
Life taught me things no classroom ever could.
Pain taught me.
Loss taught me.
Addiction taught me.
Recovery taught me.
Motherhood taught me.
Grief taught me.
Love taught me.
And every lesson stripped away another layer of illusion.
The greatest revelation wasn’t discovering answers.
It was discovering how many questions I had never been encouraged to ask.
What is consciousness?
Who are we beneath our names, our jobs, our histories, and our traumas?
How much of what we believe is truly ours?
How much has been handed to us?
At forty-one, I don’t claim certainty. I don’t claim to possess secret knowledge. What I have gained is something more valuable than certainty.
I have gained curiosity.
I have learned that consciousness expands when fear shrinks.
I have learned that awareness often arrives disguised as suffering.
I have learned that some of the darkest chapters of my life forced me to see parts of reality I would have otherwise ignored.
The woman I am today was built from questions.
Questions about the world.
Questions about society.
Questions about myself.
Questions about what it means to be human.
The younger version of me thought freedom was external.
Today I believe freedom begins in the mind.
It begins the moment you stop outsourcing your thinking.
It begins the moment you stop accepting every narrative handed to you.
It begins the moment you realize consciousness itself may be the greatest frontier we will ever explore.
Yesterday I turned forty-one.
I don’t feel older.
I feel more awake.
And if the next forty-one years teach me anything, I hope they teach me this:
Keep questioning.
Keep learning.
Keep expanding.
Keep listening to that quiet voice inside that refuses to stop searching.
Because consciousness is not a destination.
It’s a lifelong unfolding.
And for the first time in my life, I feel like I’m finally paying attention.

It's nice doing things simply because I want to and not for bragging rights or fodder for small talk.

Oftentimes, in order to see change, you have to let pain work it's magic.

We do the things we do to get the perceived rewards.

Calm comes through meditation.
Peace comes through acceptance.

Because, sometimes, thoughts of being "bad" and doing "wrong" feel so damn good."

Awakening, Enlightenment, Truth
These are not conceptual toys to be played with.
They are not practice sabres with blunted tips and smooth edges. These are real swords that yield real consequences. When this class is over, you won't simply return your sword to it's scabbard, change out of your protective gear, and go back to your regular life.
These pursuits will turn your life inside out and upside down.
Stumbling upon the reality of these unwieldy tools without a proper orientation and a strong support system can be truly overwhelming and dangerous.

If your purpose for traveling the road to awakening is the hope that eventually you will be able to shut out the pain and suffering of the world, you're on the wrong road.
You stand a better chance of reaching your goal by shutting it down, turning around, and going back to sleep.

People don't chase possessions, they chase dreams.
Let that sink in..

I no longer engage in meaningless pursuits as a way of filling empty moments.
Instead, just like a Roomba, I sit and wait until my time approaches or a genuine need arises.
- a calm peaceful mind
It's expected that you would feel extreme discomfort when peering into the emptiness of having no meaning or purpose for your life.
