"man who should've won the grand prix in many respects last year, he got a particularly harsh penalty didn't he"
sorry did we not watch the same incident with almost 60psi of force on the brake pedal behind a safety car in wet conditions???? HARSH? it was slam dunk for dangerous driving especially when it was the second time that race he'd fucking done it, we've seen people get far worse for less
Fang Tong’s words made Mu Wanyao finalize a decision she had been hesitating about. She curved her lips: “Remain faithful to his memory? Do you mean that as long as he returns, as long as they know Yan Shang is still alive, Miao Niang still wants to marry him? How fortunate for Yan Shang. Since that’s the case, I want to leave Pei Qing in Rang County, and Yan Shang… I want to imprison him, imprison him, and force him to come with me to Jinling and return to Chang’an together. I want to imprison him, force him to marry me.”
Tigers Sniff the Rose
Queen. Go get your man!
(as if he needs imprisoning he just offered to start over with her again, she's just impatient)
Three years apart and she's gone from let's have a permanent situationship to I need to lock this man down NOW
Before their separation, she was sure he was always going to indulge her, and also her marriage related trauma was not completely healed, so she could afford to delay. Post separation, her confidence in herself and his feelings really dropped.
I know that her last thoughts before the time jump were that they would never meet again in this life, but I strongly believe it was purely because she was still angry about him eroding her power base. I think that deep down inside, she expected him to eventually contact her, as he had always done before.
So she did eventually chill (she doesn't blame him in any way for his actions after they reunite, and does even defend him in front of others) and started waiting for him to write, but the expected letter never came (as he honestly believed he was not good enough for her and he should just leave her alone) and so she was left yearning. She interprets his refusal to maintain any connection with her as him falling out of love and forgetting her, and is deeply pained about it, and there is also a very lovely interlude after his eyes get healed, where she internally wonders, as he looks at her, whether he still finds her beautiful, and whether he feels the same heart fluttering emotions she felt when she saw him again after three years.
She wasn’t stupid, usually one hint from him and she understood. She couldn’t help exclaiming: “What? Are you saying you moved out of Yongshou Temple to avoid Fifth Miss Zhao? You didn’t want to be my neighbor, didn’t want to help me, you were trying to avoid someone? From beginning to end, it was all for her?”
Yan Shang was also stunned. He said: “That’s correct… but Your Highness’s interpretation seems different from what I meant.”
Mu Wanyao: “In any case, it was for her.”
Tigers Sniff the Rose
Mu Wanyao is jealous of:
tiny female children
Yan Shang's biological sister
a woman he's actively trying to avoid
She's so ridiculous! (affectionate)
Ok why is FL a rapist. Drugging someone with aphrodisiacs without their knowledge or consent is NOT ok even if you also take it or even if he’s into you.
Honestly she is the fucking worst.
Sometimes an aphrodisiac is a date rape drug, and sometimes it's just Viagra. 😂

131 chapters in and she’s still insane. She’s clearly never gonna change. I am just gonna accept this particular brand of crazy works for ML but it’s been ages since I enjoyed a novel this much where the main couple works for me so little - like I get why they are into each other but as an outsider observing it is literally everything I dislike in a ship.
She’s such an awful human being and he’s so unflinchingly idealistic - and I totally get why they can’t let go of each other but it’s like Kim Kardashian x Che Guevara hooking up - like WHUT
This was literally my stance about the Gui Luan couple... until it wasn't.
Mu Wanyao fixed Fang Tong with a cold stare: “Must I be dying of heartache to prove I care about him? Must I cry every night to prove I care about him? Who told you that just because I act unbothered, it means I truly treat him as a mere plaything, that everything is over and done with?”
@renewedmotionforjudgment I feel like she's being possessed by Wen Yu's spirit and addressing my former untrusting self directly here. 😂😂😂
This time Mu Wanyao wasn’t eating because of jealousy.
She felt very uncomfortable, and the more she thought about her marriage, the more irritated she became. She pondered about Yan Shang’s fiancée, and the more she thought, the more jealous and resentful she felt.
Feeling it wasn’t fair.
Why should she marry someone she didn’t like, and for the sake of that person’s official position; while Yan Shang could be shared by another woman.
Mu Wanyao, a person engaged to be married: why is my ex boyfriend getting married??????? THIS IS VERY UNFAIR
Tears welled up in her eyes, and her heart couldn’t catch its breath at this realization, feeling despair. She had never so clearly realized that Yan Shang was truly going to walk out of her life, become part of the past… She had no beautiful memories in her past, only he was the most beautiful.
But he was trying so hard to leave.
…Just because she loved power and he loved the people’s welfare, did it have to be this way?
What was wrong with loving power? Power first, him second… but he was still second!
What was wrong with that?
What was wrong with that!—
After Mu Wanyao left like this, Yan Shang sat alone in his quarters, leaning against the wall.
He sat blankly for a long time, several times unable to control his urge to chase after her. But he forced himself not to go.
The events from three years ago made Yan Shang realize that someone like him might truly not be suitable to like anyone, to receive anyone’s love.
Long ago when Mu Wanyao joked with him, he said he didn’t value love or marriage. But he was still young then, and he actually didn’t understand that when he valued these things so little, he shouldn’t have accepted the princess’s love. His love would hurt people, miss people, abandon people…
He was only suitable to stay alone, not suitable to let any lady love him.
His love had no future.
She thinks he no longer wants her because she values power, and meanwhile he tries to distance himself because he thinks he's simply unworthy of her, as he always puts people's welfare first, and can't give her his entire heart, the way he believes she wants and deserves. And the thing is - he actually told her exactly this when she came to visit him in prison, but after three years of separation, she convinced herself that he doesn't love her anymore.
DELISH.
On the winding path ahead, a group of people seemingly having heard the commotion were coming this way. Most wore minor official robes, appearing to be local officials.
But their leader, in white robes, didn’t look like an official.
His features were elegant and refined, with servants holding umbrellas behind him, though his robes were still splattered with mud. A white gauze covered his eyes, with the gauze bands extending behind his head floating lightly in the wind and rain.
Supported by a servant boy and guided by others, he walked toward them.
His voice was clear and gentle: “Honored guests, having just arrived in our humble region, we failed to welcome you from afar, causing your difficulties. I am truly ashamed—”—
Mu Wanyao stood sideways, quietly watching as Yan Shang was helped closer. Before seeing anyone, he bowed and apologized first.
Seeing the white gauze over his eyes, seeing his dignified bearing.
Seeing the smile at his lips, seeing the misty rain veiling his brow and eyes, blocking the view—
Countless snow-like lights flew down from beneath the pine trees, heaven and earth interwoven, mountains and forests like smoke.
Throughout heaven and earth, she stood in the mud while he stood like jade in white.
When they met again, it was as torrential rain poured down from the sky.
There's something about them and the rain.

Mu Wanyao after smooching Yan Shang in the carriage: and now we part, never to meet again in this life Mu Wanyao three years later: Yan Shang is so good, so awesome, so beautiful, I loved watching him existing around me, he's literally the best man ever, I MISS HIM SO MUCH
Ok I am 112+ chapters in and have zero beef with FL but oh good lord I want to strangle the ML.
I am not big on idealists in general but this dude takes it to a new stupid level.
Like yeah yeah poor people evil officials blah blah who the fuck cares past a certain point you are gonna lose your head and you are going against the woman you supposedly love and also dude all your fucking meddling is gonna lead to civil war. The ministers are literally pulling knives at each other in the capital. All for bandits?!?!? Permit me not to care what boohoo matters led them to fucking rob and murder people for a living - they got executed for it? So sad.
Will I ever reach a point where I don’t want to throttle either of them and am ok with both of them at the same time?
Unlikely.
At this point I think FL is too good for this idiot and should like buy herself a sex toy and make a platonic friend who’s not insane and put together it will work way better.
ETA: it is totally in character for him and obviously morally right so I don’t know why it annoys me so but it does.
I do love that they are now bona fide enemies - his plan would yank her down and destroy her power base despite the fact that she needs it to survive and she told her brother he can kill ML if he wants - but not for romance but for utterly incompatible political positions.
ETA2: oh for goodness sake aren’t there some mines in a fake country for your to diffuse (iykyk)
Team Princess.
I actually completely understand where he comes from, and I have exactly zero issues with his actions, because they're very in character, and a perfect illustration of who he is at this particular point of the story.
The thing is that he was willing to compromise, he knew that he could not replace all the corrupt officials, and that it was not advisable to do so without throwing the entire place into chaos. But then they had to push him too far, killing those civilians who had essentially been under his protection, so, being who he is, of fucking course he snapped.
And this, btw, is one of the things that make the story so interesting for me. Because she loves power and holds on to it (and regardless of what she told him, it's not only so that they can be together, it's also to make sure that no one will ever be able to force her to do things she doesn't want to do), and he loves justice, and this particular conflict was bound to happen sooner rather than later.
I really think they needed this break-up so that they could chill, grow up and understand each other better.
After having finished the novel yes - very much so.
I love where conflict in the relationship doesn’t come from outside sources like sml or sfl or evil fam or misunderstandings or w/e but innate in the couple - their views and their personalities and who they are at the very base drive it.
You know that famous Richard Lovelace line from a poem “I could not love thee (Dear) so much, Lov’d I not Honour more” - it’s sort of mirrored here because it’s not about him himself but her feelings for him - she could not trust him so much with herself, she could not fall for him and feel safe with him and heal with him if he wasn’t the kind of person who wouldn’t put honor and morality first - the very reason she loves him is the same reason they have this conflict at this point.
EXACTLY.
What I really loved is that through all of this, he still loves her, still worries about her, bitterly regrets the fact that they have to separate, and doesn't speak a word against her even under severe torture. And she's extremely angry with him, but also utterly heartbroken and sad under her icy princess facade.
It's just such good angst.
Semi-tangent but I love that in this novel, physical damage actually sticks and doesn't magically disappear overnight. Like his health is never 100% the same as it was before the torture and it takes a looooong time for it to get to a decent state (the eyes thing is a prime example.)
But the same is true with mental state too - I love that she does heal and it's slow and gradual - this novel takes place over quite a period and so we can see that after years of marriage to someone she loves and trusts and happiness with him she has clearly healed a lot (but will still never be who she was before she was sent off for diplomatic marriage.)

Mu Wanyao murmured: “You make me feel that in this world, no one truly loves anyone.”
It must be because of not loving, that he would choose this path.
Having said this, she felt there was nothing more to say to Yan Shang and rose to leave. Who would have thought that while Yan Shang had been so calm when explaining his thoughts earlier, this one sentence of hers would make his eyes immediately turn red? As she rose to leave, he suddenly looked up at her, reaching out to grab her wrist.
His eyes were rimmed with red, the light in them wavering like tidal waters.
Yan Shang’s voice trembled slightly: “Don’t think like that. Of all things… what I fear most is you thinking this way.
“I chose to walk this path, I don’t deserve your affection, I shouldn’t have approached you that day. I already regret it deeply, shouldn’t have made you suffer because of me… but don’t think like this. It’s just that I’m not good, not that everyone in the world isn’t good. Don’t close yourself off because of me, never trust anyone again.
“I finally managed to get you to… come out a little. I don’t want you to hide away again.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS, give me ALLLLLLLLL THE ANGST.
Mu Wanyao: “Stop wasting your breath! You can’t stop me from doing what I want!”
Yan Shang pressed his lips together and said: “And you can’t stop what I want to do.”

A young woman crouched by the lakeside, holding an infant, softly cooing to the baby as they played. The night wind stirred her clothes, brushed past her cheeks.
She was like clear water.
She was like dewdrops.
She smiled gracefully by the lakeside, making Liu Wenji’s heart skip a beat, the world becoming blank and silent because of her.
When she heard movement from this direction, thinking she had offended someone important, she hurriedly held her swaddled infant tighter, rising to look this way. Her first reaction was to bow and beg forgiveness, but when she saw who had come, she froze in shock—
Chunhua stared blankly at Liu Wenji.
Liu Wenji’s sudden, unexpected appearance.
Across the palace servants, across the court people, across the pavilions and pond vegetation, she held her child, the maternal radiance on her face draining like blood.
She looked at Liu Wenji in his palace servant’s robes, forgetting even her infant’s sudden crying—
“Your Grace?” the young palace servant questioned Liu Wenji uncertainly.
Everyone was startled awake.
Night birds resting on the lake took flight in alarm, Chunhua hurriedly lowered her head to comfort her crying child, while Liu Wenji suddenly turned away, striding quickly in another direction.
Liu Wenji walked extremely fast, the night becoming especially cold, so he walked faster and faster.
Dense clouds pressed heavily overhead, thunder rumbling at the horizon. Liu Wenji walked quickly in the suffocating silence, looking down at his palace servant’s robes, and the bloodstains on his clothes.
Then thinking of Chunhua just now, holding her child, playing by the lake. Happy, carefree.
She was still so beautiful and perfect, while he had fallen into the abyss, sinking deeper and deeper.
Walking in the darkness, Liu Wenji’s tears fell from his eyes.
Silent and endless, the tears grew more numerous, blurring his vision—
My heart breaks for them both.
