Scenarios for academic rivals:

A gained the prize they and B were competing for. B tries to feel angry or upset, but when they see the smile and happiness on A's face they can’t avoid the memories that come with it. While lost in flashbacks of happy moments lived with A, B ends up sharing smiles and applause with everyone in their class, which makes A surprised and flustered. B notices what they are doing and when they about to stop, they notice someone is way more embarrassed and they enjoy that.

B always hates to see A overworking themselves, so when they have to do a project together - against their will - B tries to help A without them realizing. But A realizes and teases B about it, which leads them to a nervous B being too close to A while being teased.

A and B end up together in detention after B gets involved in a mess and A takes the blame to save them, but the principal/teacher doesn't believe they did anything separately but together. In detention A can’t properly explain why they tried to help B besides staring directly at their lips.

A and B start to discuss a topic they are both passionate about when A gets lost in how B looks so pretty when talking about what they love and how that used to be one of their favorite things in B.

A and B start to compete for a position on the school’s journal; It gets to the point that people from their class start to watch and anxiously wait for their next clash in class, which leads to the teacher obliging them to work together. A realizes they might still have feelings for B and after panicking about having to work together, they try to give up the work, but B shows up at their house to start the first essay they have to write.

academic rivals to lovers

— how to start it:

to be honest, this is a hard thing to answer. you can only start writing by well, starting to write. what i can say though, is that rivals to lovers is really similar to enemies to lovers (a sub-genre of the trope, i’d say). the steps to write it are the same, as well as the importance of taking your time to flesh out your characters & their story.

the small difference is that this is specifically set in a school of sorts (whether that is university or high school) and therefore there’s a lot more situation specific ways it could go.

(i believe and hope all my advice applies to all romances, including wlw!)

so.

the key component is the

WHY & HOW.

to make it simple, here are questions to ask yourself:

why are they rivals? what prompted it?

what would have to happen for it to end?

do either of them want it to end? why?

how do the people around them feel about it and how does that affect them, if at all?

what classes do they share and are they rivals in all of them or only a select few? why?

what forces them to be rivals? surely there are other people who go to this school and want to do well. why are these two character specifically rivals?

what does being academic rivals mean to them? getting better grades? beating each other to class?

what type of school do they attend? a private school? a boarding school? a public school? rivalry could look different in these settings.

what is their rivalry like, interaction-wise? do they make jokes and banter or is it genuinely something that affects them deeper than surface level?

how long has this rivalry been going on?

what is it stopping them from letting their rivalry go? pride and narcissism are good reasons, but it’s even better to go deeper.

what are you going to do as the author to make sure that they keep interacting? sure, they’re rivals at school. but that’s only a couple hours of your day. are they in clubs? do they share any extracirriculars? food for thought.

In most shows/books, there’s a best friend character or family member that the hero confides in, but here we see Daphne, Violet and Benedict only get the fake Anthony who tries to do his duty and act honorably and is so focused on his goals, he can’t be completely honest with them. He has all this heaviness on his shoulders and the only one he can tell is Kate. Violet finally sees through his pain at the end, but he doesn’t just come out and tell her how hard it’s been for him to live for his family instead of himself. Only Kate gets the unvarnished truth.

Then there’s the moments he stands up for Kate, wants to protect her, and needs her good opinion at his own expense. It starts with Benedict’s poem that he can’t pass off as his own once he sees the way she looks at him. Then when she says it doesn’t matter what she wants, he’s the first to say that it should matter. He’s the one who asks why she doesn’t intend to find a match for herself, the only one wondering about her future happiness. When she is angry he has proposed, he pauses a moment to ask her if she would have wanted that unthinkable fate of them getting married instead because what she wants still matters.

He stands up to the Sheffields when they degrade her with their insults knowing it jeopardizes his engagement, and then he agrees to marry Edwina just because Kate begs him to even though he knows how much it could cost him and his honor. Then when the wedding disaster happens and Kate’s whole family blames her, and she blames herself, he pauses in his mission to fix things to tell her to “wait” just so he can hold her hand and comfort her.

"If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes have not changed, but one word from you will silence me forever. If, however, your feelings have changed, I will have to tell you: you have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love--I love--I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on."

They would see and hate the others life choices but recognize that as their choices and realize that they may not be all that different when it comes down to it.

Daphne recognizes that her place in society is as a wife and mother.

Elizabeth knows that was what was expected of her but chose her own path.

They both fell for a man.

They changed themselves not someone changing them.

Darcy and Elizabeth both have too much “pride” and faith in their own judgement while Jane and Bingley don’t have enough belief in their own worth and instincts.

Darcy and Jane are both too reserved and guarded while Elizabeth and Bingley are both too apt to blurt things out without thinking.

Darcy is too rigid and inflexible while Bingley is too adaptable and easily persuaded.

Darcy and Elizabeth tend to form opinions too quickly and then stubbornly cling to them for too long while Bingley and Jane take too long to admit to themselves and others how strongly they truly feel about certain things - and people.

Jane and Bingley are determinedly optimistic to the point of oblivious naivete while Darcy and Elizabeth are discerning to the point of being too critical and cynical.

I know this list focuses on their shortcomings, but obviously they all possess countless strengths as well! And I love how by the end they’ve all learned and grown :) The world needs more people like all four of them tbh…
