pairing: aerionxstark!readerxvalarr
Synopsis: Raised within the Red Keep alongside Princes Aerion and Valarr, Lyanna shared a deep bond with Aerion before his sudden departure left her believing she had been forgotten. Years later, his return forces her to confront the feelings she never lost, while Valarrβs devotion leaves her torn between a love from the past and the life she is bound to.
warnings: eventual smut, language, love triangle, kissing, biting, angst/slight comfort, aerion, Readerβs stepfather is an asshole. Not thoroughly proofread.
A/N: my first ever fic hehe good luck reading this, readerβs character is inspired Sansa stark (I love her to death), probably a lot of historical inaccuracies. Enjoyyy
Part 1
It was often hard to believe that kings landing and the red keep were in the same place
A princess of the north, trapped in the southern heat. The people of kings landing called you many things, things you didnβt have the heart to completely remember, admitting what they had said would only bring sadness, what good use would that be of?
it seems, though, that sadness had a strange technique, itβd hit you with complete numbness at first, and then it would explode all over and cover all your hard work.
Youβd learnt this the hard way. Sitting with your back against a tree that resembled the weirwood back in winterfell very closely, but it wasnβt. You were in kings landing. Only a child of three and ten, grabbing fistfuls of grass and flinging it somewhere out of your sight.
News of your fathers death had just been given to you, though you were glad it was prince maekar whoβd told you. he was the closest thing you had to a father here, prince baelor also treated you as his own, but it was maekar whoβd truly taken you under his wing and led you among his flock of children.
this was the complete numbness, you thought, it will explode all over the place one day, and you will cry to your hearts content, then itβll be fine. youβll never be sad again.
you pinched your thighs, hoping for even a small tear. Itβs not that you werenβt sad, no. You were overcome with grief, so much that you resorted to not speaking at all.
leaning against the tree, it was so quiet. You thought, for a moment, that youβd lose your way back if you didnβt leave now, but going back there would mean accepting it. That he was gone, that you were leaving, that the red keep was no longer your home.
You shut your eyes, wanting the black void from behind your eyelids to engulf you completely, maybe then you wouldnβt have to face all those people, the same people who mocked you in their streets, maybe then youβd make sense of the trees that were so quietly screaming at you to listen.
valarrβs footsteps grew more obvious, you fixed the scowl on your face that had only deepened upon hearing him come closer.
in truth, youβd heard him shuffling about the forest a long while ago, he was trying to be quiet, you hoped it was aerion, heβd know just how to console you, but you hadnβt seen him the whole day. You were angry at him for not being there when you needed him. You wished the grass you were ripping out was his hair instead, you wanted him here, you wanted his white hair under your fingers, you wanted to tug until all he could do was feel the damage your fingers were doing to his hair. His perfect white hair.
The boy plopped down next to you without a word, he too had lost his parent a few years ago, maybe he understood you didnβt want to speak, or you couldnβt, either way, no words came out of your mouth
He didnβt pressure you to speak. itβs not like he was starting a delightful conversation about the weather, but you could tell he wanted to say something.
βIβm sorry about your fatherβ he murmured, you could only nod and pray he took it as acknowledging his consolation.
Your lack of response didnβt faze him, he expected it, but he didnβt move. He stayed where he was.
A few moments passed between the two of you in silence, it was, despite everything, a comfortable type of silence, the type that allowed you to muster up the courage and finally say something.
βHe knew he wasnt going to come backβ
β..What?β
βHe told me he had to go back to winterfell to welcome the boltons, my sister was getting married to one of them.β Your gaze was fixed on the little village of grass youβd mercilessly laid siege on.
βIs she still going to marry?β Valarr also attempted to poke the grass, but he resorted to not getting his hands dirty.
βI hope not, I blame the boltons for my fatherβs death. I donβt know much yet but this i am sure of.β You spoke with a strange sense of calmness in you that only stirred valarrβs wariness around you. He didnβt scoff at your wild accusations, he too remembered blaming half the red keep when his mother had passed.
βIβll miss you.β He whispered, so quiet you almost wouldβve have caught it if you werenβt looking at his lips already to notice them moving.
βMe too.β Your eyes met his mismatched ones, purple was an overrated color anyways, why would anyone look at anything else when you had these eyes?
you leaned in without noticing, you blamed the fall and winter in his eyes, the specks of summer that dusted the tip of his sunburnt nose, all the Targaryen princes were rather easily sunburnt, not prince baelor though, youβd noticed. his dornish blood aided him quite well in that aspect.
βAre you sure?β You liked how his voice sounded now, the treasure of the red keep, future king, nearly trembling with nervousness, or maybe it was the gush of wind in the godswood, further humidifying the air that settled around you two.
still, you werenβt sure, you didnβt know what you were doing, but you wanted to forget it all, forget the carriage that they prepared for you to leave in, forget the absence of Aerion, not like it was anything new, forget the loss of your father, forget the fucking sympathetic words everyone muttered to you. Whether they meant it or not didnβt matter to you.
the kiss was soft, almost a ghost of your lips over his, you didnβt press hard, neither did Valarr, who stilled as if heβd done something wrong, but didnβt he want to forget as well? Surely someone of his title and expectation mustβve wanted to forget all of it for a moment.
youβd always admired Valarr, he had a beautiful face, and an even prettier manner, everyone adored him. He wasnβt much like Aerion, not obsessed with dead dragons, not blinded by stories of honor and glory. Valarr seemed to have made a space for himself to settle down in while everyone else ran about the keep. He had this sense of surety that you never knew the exact origin of, but youβd love to, to know how he was so collected. he was, at times, angry, nervous or scared even, but he never lost his composure, youβd spent a long while envying him for that.
When you pulled back, he looked at you in a completely different way, he was breathing hard, staring at you incredulously as if youβd invented kissing. He didnβt know he was your first, neither did you know if you were his, but in this moment, questions subsided the moment you leaned your head against his shoulder.
youβd done that with aerion countless times before, it started when the Lannister children picked on you upon your arrival for being a northerner, and that you didnβt belong in the red keep. Aerion came to your defense and scared them away, all you remembered were the tears in your eyes, you couldnβt face him like this. So your head found his chest. He didnβt hug you back, he never did, heβd only run his fingers through your hair until you were done silently crying into his shoulder, he always pretended he didnβt notice.
but this wasnβt aerionβs shoulder, this was his cousins, the boy who was infinitely the better choice between the two, your father always did have a soft spot for Aerion, you still couldnβt get over the fact that Aerion picked today, of all days, to randomly disappear, it wasnβt a new thing, heβd be wandering around kings landing for maybe a few days or more, then heβd come back and pretend like nothing happened. You missed him, you missed your father, and you felt bad for thinking about anything other than Valarr at the moment. still, you didnβt regret the kiss.
βMy lady, Prince Valarr has summoned you to a walk in the gardens.β
Looking up from your seat at the windowsill, you set your embroidery aside, it hadnβt looked any different from how it did when you picked it up, thanks to your daydreaming.
it had been almost a fortnight since the encounter with Aerion, avoiding him proved near impossible but you were determined. If he was in any room, youβd discreetly leave as soon as you could. If you felt his gaze heavy on you, youβd turn away.
you werenβt going to give him a reaction at all, which was fucking impossible because he was trying to vex you on purpose now, and you werenβt exactly known for controlling your composure.
still, you were calm and collected, not sure how much longer this front would last. You decided not to think too much of it, Valarr was waiting for you. Best not keep him waiting.
Valarr smiled upon finding you trailing your fingertips over the bright red geraniums, you wondered how theyβd look in spring if they were blossoming already.
βI figured youβd like thoseβ he chuckled, a warm huff of breath that came straight from his chest.
You held absolutely no preference for these flowers. Your favorites were dragonβs breath, but no one knew that, except for a certain silver haired prince with an obsession with dead dragons.
Atleast valarr never startled you, neither did he ever wish to, but you could always tell it was him by the sound of his footsteps. No matter how confident he may have seemed, his stride told a different story when he was around you. It was almost as if he were a little boy again shuffling about the godswood contemplating whether or not he should approach you.
βThey are blossoming already, the rest of the flowers cannot say the sameβ
βFlowers cannot speakβ
βYouβve simply never heard them.β You smiled, turning around and facing him just to find him closer than youβd thought. You liked his smile, you liked how silvers of his teeth caught the light, you liked imagining how theyβd taste. Memories could only serve for so long. βAnd you have? What are you, the high priestess of winterfell come to haunt the red keep?β
βDo you doubt me, Prince Valarr?β
The awkward shell of not seeing eachother in so long was slowly cracking away, until the presence of one another was, once again, comfortable.
the walk was very pleasant, the weather was slightly chilly for a summer morning, you could see egg and matarys sparring somewhere ahead. It was a nice day and you felt like you could finally breathe, despite knowing that Aerion was hot on your trail.
βHave you spoken to him yet?β
βWho?β You replied, feigning oblivion.
βYou know who, Lyanna.β Valarr let out a breathy chuckle, nudging your shoulder. βHeβs been restless as of late, I assumed you were the reason.β
βWe spoke briefly, havenβt seen him in a fortnight.β Valarr caught the vagueness in your answers, still, he didnβt press. He knew the history of you two, everyone in the red keep knew of you and Aerion, in their eyes, you were the only child that could soften aerionβs presence. If you entered a room he was in, lords and ladies would let out sighs of relief, Thankful of their savior whoβd come to whisk the βcruelβ prince away.
βI heard of your stepfatherβ valarr sounded as if heβd immediately regretted saying anything of that man, gods know how much you hated that oaf.
βHe is no stepfather of mine, he is but my fatherβs younger brother, the spare tool finally being put to use.β You bit back all the temper you could hold between your teeth, trying not to let a subject as pathetic as this get a rise out of you so easily.
Valarr nodded grimly, you liked how he made you feel like you were always being taken seriously, even if it was the stupidest or smallest thing, heβd never laugh at you. βRight.. ofcourse.β He mumbled.
you two had reached a familiar tree in the godswood, judging by the way Valarr practically planted his feet in the soil, refusing to move any further, you guessed heβd remembered it too.
βDo you know what happened here, my prince?β Stifling a smile at seeing the flush crawl up his neck and ears, you had to look completely oblivious of what you were doing to him.
He cleared his throat, taking peculiar interest in his boots, or anything that wasnβt the huge tree standing infront of you both. βYes. I do.β He risked his entire life by glancing over at your face, and then back to his boots at the speed of lightning once heβd locked his wide eyes with your anticipating gaze.
βAre you quite well Valarr?β You stepped towards him, one hand leaning on his chest as the back of your other hand touched his forehead. he practically flew away from your touch, his entire face was red now, and gods help you, were you trying not to laugh.
βSeven hells, Lyanna. Youβre having too much fun.β
βThis is the most fun Iβve had since Iβve got here.β You snickered.
βI pity you, really I do.β He tried to sound serious but with that charming smile that fought his stern words, it was hard to believe him.
the two of you walked back to the castle, satisfied with the leisurely time spent together.
You were glad not much had changed between the two of you, though it wasnt like there had ever been much to change. no matter how many times youβd tried to convince yourself, all the way from the ride to kings landing from winterfell till this very moment, that you loved Valarr, that he loved you, and that the kiss you two shared was purely out of βuncontrollable feelingsβ for eachother, you werenβt sure anymore what was real and what wasnβt.
youβd created a whole world inside your head in which your one true love was Valarr Targaryen, a world in which your first ever kiss wasnβt completely impulsive.
The memory of Aerion haunted you like an annoying little dog that followed you to the ends of the world. You tried to rid yourself of him, but he kept pressing for a reaction, and you knew that sooner or later heβd eventually get one.
The king had called for a small feast, one of many that occupied the red keepβs evenings.
As content as you shouldβve been, there was not a single trace of eagerness in your soul, only dread. Aerion would be there, the same man whoβd throw king daeron out of his own chair to simply get the smallest reaction from you, the same man who kissed you like he was dying merely a fortnight ago.
The bite mark heβd so gracefully burnt into your neck was finally beginning to heal, it was too troublesome explaining to the maids how youβd gotten it, so you resorted to dressing yourself the last few days. A good thing it was that the mark didnβt show above the neckline, otherwise youβd throw yourself off the peak of some abandoned tower.
the feast had gone by smoothly, Aerion had made no efforts to call on you yet, every second that passed by was accompanied by a sincere prayer to the seven under your breath.
please let the feast end smoothly, let me control my emotions, let me not be angered by aerionβs deeds, let him perform no unruly actions.
Never in your life had you questioned your faith in the seven, it seems there truly is a first time for everything.
because the feast did not end smoothly, and Aerion had to perform some unruly action simply out of habit.
βA toast, to my cousin, Prince Valarr, whose fortune has always been enviable, some men are simply born to receive gifts they did not earn.β
Aerion stood there, staring right into your wide eyes, he drank before anyone could say anything, but the hall had notably quieted down. You were going to end him then and there.
βQuite right you are, cousin.β Valarr spoke before you did, you wanted to throw something at Aerion, maybe even Valarr. βA man is not judged by what is placed in his hands, but what he does with it.β A modest smile graced valarrβs features as he excused himself from the table, you followed moments later but didnβt find him.
you settled for a walk through the gallery, isolated with nothing but your own thoughts. The feast wouldβve gone perfectly fine without aerionβs remarks, he had full right to be mad, and it was perfectly in his capabilities to do something like that. You couldnβt blame aerion for being himself, but gods could he be infuriating sometimes!
βYouβve been ignoring meβ
you hadnβt heard any sign of company, no one could startle you like Aerion. You hated how you flinched and turned immediately, Squeezing your eyes shut as if to block out his presence completely. He did not miss the lingering presence of Valarr behind one of the stone archways at the closer end of the gallery, listening. you clearly hadnβt noticed.
βWas that necessary at all? Mine and valarrβs betrothal had nothing to do withββ
βWith me? It has everything to do with me! Donβt be foolish. You were supposed to be my promised, mine!β He hissed, grabbing your hands that were balled into fists as you tried your best to keep your voice down.
βHave you forgotten that it was you who left? Did you really think youβd come back after so fucking long and Iβd still be waiting for you like some dog?β You tried to shove him off, but his grip on your wrists only tightened, so much it began to hurt a little.
βNo but I didnβt exactly expect you to be engaged to my cousin like the whore you areβ he bit out. You wouldβve slapped him hard enough to leave a permanent mark if he still wasnβt holding onto your wrists like a vice. Curse him and his foul mouth.
naturally, you tugged him forward and struck your knee into his groin, he doubled over and let go of your wrists entirely, you grabbed his hair, tilting his head up to you.
βIf you think of me as a whore for simply being promised to Valarr, I wonder what youβd think of me if you heard the rest.β
You pursed your lips, wondering if you should rub salt in his fresh wound, maybe it wasnβt true. Valarr hadnβt touched you in that sort of way since youβd returned to the red keep, but seeing aerionβs face when heβd thought that someone had touched you, that youβd been βclaimedβ. You wouldβve told a hundred lies to see him like this. It made you happier than youβd ever been with Valarr, this was the validation you never knew you needed.
not so far away, Valarr had heard it all, heβd assumed that you were simply using him to get your way with Aerion and enrage him more and more.
you let go of his silver hair, fixing your skirts before moving past him as if heβd never existed, in the opposite way of him and Valarr.
Once your retreating figure had left for good, Aerion heard valarrβs footsteps like thunder invading a peaceful sky, even though there was nothing peaceful in the encounter between you and him.
βMust you anger her like that?β Valarr was angry, well contained, yet anger nonetheless. It was almost too good for aerionβs little heart.
βYou canβt blame me for your wife not loving you, dear cousin.β Grinning as Valarr practically shoved him to the pillar, Aerion huffed out a laugh as his back hit the cold stone.
βLyanna does not want to be near you, understood? Itβs better you donβt chase after her.β The dark haired princeβs voice was struggling to maintain its composure. His hand was behaving with its own mind, almost as if there was this heavy magnetic power pulling his hand to aerionβs jaw, Aerion escaped his grasp before heβd get exiled once again.
βYou donβt know what she wants, Valarr. Admit it.β Aerion shrugged valarrβs hand off his cloak and walked off. Leaving Valarr all alone in the cold, accompanied by nothing but the hushed whispers of wind moving through trees down below.
yayyyy Valarr is here finally, itβs literally like almost 4 am right now Iβm kinda happy with where the storyβs going so far, new character next chapterππππ also we find out what happened in the trial of seven too because I just canβt wait to write about it!!

The fire in the hearth crackled low, the only silver of warmth you could cling to was slowly dying out. still, you were not given the blessing of retiring to your bedchambers for the day. Your step father did not cease his ramblings of how youβd turned down every betrothal heβd set for you, be it against your will or not, curse your insolence.
βIt is settled then.β He hummed with torturous simplicity, finally setting his goblet down, were you not on the verge of insanity, youβd be impressed of how he was speaking clearly for his intoxicated state.
You shot up, not ready to give your life away so easily. The news of your betrothal shattered any last bit of composure you had left. your mother, it seemed, had other plans.
βSit down Lyanna.β She hissed, knowing of her husbandβs temper, but more than that she knew yours.
βI shall not sit down! Youβve finally married me off, is that not what youβve wanted all this long? To rid this place of me. Itβd be a blessing wouldnβt it!? I will leave then! Good fortune to you lot.β Your stepfather, in all his drunken glory, could only hiccup and laugh to himself of how youβd prided yourself on being so βcompletely undesirableβ.
The last thing that was heard was the sound of your chair scraping against the floor as you stormed off, and drunken grumbles of the βlord of winterfell.β
the doors to your chambers were slammed shut with the last of the help scurrying out, you werenβt a cruel person, but even they knew not to be anywhere near you when you were in a sour mood.
You leant against the door, willing yourself to be composed otherwise your mother would become a widow yet again.
Your father was beron stark, the late king in the north, the only man youβd truly die defending. You remember the day he passed just as if it were yesterday, the halls of the red keep youβd finally began to familiarize yourself with, only for you to be sent back here, used as a vessel of trust between the people of the north and their new warden.
βLyanna, open this door at once.β Your motherβs voice was muffled coming from the door. Anger had not yet completely simmered off your mind, and left a tint which colored all your current thoughts.
βI do not wish to speak.β
βI did not ask after your wishes, girl, open this door or Iβll climb through your window. Shall I fall and die, youβll be left alone with him.β
you could picture the smile sheβd be wearing proudly as you made your way over to the door, upon opening it, you stood uncorrected.
she often comforted you like this, youβd be lying on your bed with her sitting near the pillows, but your head would stay in her lap, her fingers brushing through your dark hair, a trait you knew reminded her of your father.
to say he was mourned greatly was an understatement, he was a truly honorable man. taking you by the arm, as the first lights of dawn stretched their arms and tainted the skies, and teaching you to wield and fight, you werenβt any great knight, but youβd fought well enough for a princess.
βI want you to know that I do believe this is a great thing for you, little dove, Iβm aware you had no wishes to be married, and that this is against your will, but how do you plan on spending the rest of your days? Here? In this depressing castle surrounded by the guards of a man you despise? I have lived out my days, Iβve done my duty as daughter, wife and mother. It is time you do yours.β Your motherβs voice pulled you from your thoughts.
βAnd besides, this is no red-faced lord, this is a Targaryen prince, your friend, lyanna, Prince Valarr. Mayhaps it is a matter of your taste, but is he not charming? He is respectful and kind and it is clear he can do no harm to you. What more could you want, my child?β Her tone had dropped do a whisper now, youβd resorted to not speaking, you liked when she was like this, and you didnβt trust your mouth enough to open it.
what more could you want?
you simply nodded and sheβd left you to your thoughts, turning back from the door to smile at you when she thought you were sleeping.
βyouβre holding it wrongβ you squinted at aerionβs grip on his wooden sword, your septaβs would scream in agony if they saw you like this. Clad from head to toe in useless wooden armor that only made you heavier and movements slower. a sheen layer of sweat clung to your forehead and your braid had come loose. to a septa, it wouldβve been βdisheveledβ or βdirtyβ, but to Aerion, he thought it was the best heβd seen you.
βItβs much easier like this.β Aerion muttered as you made your way over to him and lifted each of his fingers one by one to properly wield the sword, he ignored how he felt himself get dragged back to the ground when your touch left his,
βFather says righteousness is far more important than what is easy.β
βyour father should not meet mine.β That earned a chuckle from you, your attention now entirely focused on how he bent his knees and called it a stance
βGood thing heβs in the north, then.β You muttered absentmindedly as you used the tip of your sword to shift his knees more straighter. βStop squatting.β Your sudden seriousness straightened him immediately, slightly intimidated, though heβd sooner die than admit that.
You two hadnβt got to play much before you heard septa ellyn, the scariest and most ruthless one, call your name, her voice demanding and angry. you froze and turned back, dropping your sword to the ground and quickly trying to take off the decorative armor, it proved useless until you felt aerionβs hand grab yours and drag you to start running.
You both ran for what felt like an eternity and crept up into one of the abandoned towers of the red keep. the one where it was rumored people met the seven, you didnβt understand why it was cursed if it helped you meet the gods. The view was stunning, you saw kings landing from a βdragonβsβ eye as Aerion called it. the two of you sat against a wall and cooled off, the humid air of summer in kings landing wasnβt helping at all, neither was aerionβs proximity, you both sat shoulder to shoulder while heaving and breathing hard for air. You hated sweating, how it made your cheeks red and hot, how you felt as if everything you were wearing was sent to kill you, youβd much rather freeze to death than sweat for even an hour. Aerion always loved to tease you for it, heβd said that dragons do not burn, and that the northmen knew nothing but snow. You were going to argue but decided against it with how spent the two of you were.
βWe should head back now, septa ellyn will surely tell prince maekar of my doing earlier.β You whined, head dropping into your hands as if youβd carried all the misfortunes of the red keep, Aerion huffed out a laugh at your worried state.
βMy father would sooner send ellyn to the wall before hearing anyone complain about you.β He grunted as he shot up and you followed slowly, walking back to the castle as remnants of septa ellynβs red face flashed through your mind, the two of you laughed in hushed whispers that night at the dining table.
it was moments like those that were so deeply engraved in your brain, you never dared forgetting them, youβd tried countless times but something would always remind you; blonde hair that caught the light at the worst possible time just so youβd glance over and think of a particular silver headed menace or wooden swords that children would pick up before they even learnt to read properly.
it seemed as if Aerion had learnt to control time itself just to never let you forget him.
The day had finally arrived when you were leaving for kings landing, your mother was on the verge of tears for three entire days yet did not allow herself to cry until after you left, you thanked her for that deeply. Your stepfather did not care much for a farewell and you didnβt want one either, he waved his finger and the red rimmed, drunk eyes of his gave away his uninterested front, he was glad to have you gone. The ghost of his brother haunted the crypts of winterfell no longer.
as angry as you were for being sent off, kings landing was seemingly better than winterfell, sure youβd miss the weirwood tree where your father sat every morning, and the smell of a fresh coat of snow that draped over the ground after a harsh storm, youβd miss your visits to your elder brother who was lord commander of the nights watch, youβd definitely miss wandering around the godswood when you couldnβt sleep and being the first person in winterfell to hear the frail song of crows circling up above you, but youβd finally be free from your stepfathers grasp. Youβd never have to see him again, or argue with him over the simplest things, he was nothing more than a stranger to you now.
upon arriving at kings landing, to say you were welcomed warmly was an understatement, Valarr hugged you, careless of the princely etiquette he always had to maintain, then there was maekar. He did not smother you into his arms, yet the look of pride in his eyes was unmistakable, heβd praised you in a way no one wouldβve expected from the prince of scowls.
βOh how youβve grown, Lyanna, last Iβd seen you..β he trailed off thinking, in momentary bliss of the past, of how youβd had a peculiar habit of being in such a rush to go explore the red keep when youβd first been there as a child, that youβd forget to put on shoes and simply patter around barefoot.
βI take it you are more acquainted with your shoes now, yes?β His voice was gentle, you both shared a good laugh.
βYes, my prince, the septaβs never gave up.β βYou were quite the challenge for them, one would think the septaβs had seen it all after my children.β maekar hung his head low but youβd caught the twitch of the corners of his mouth.
finally you were escorted to your old chambers. The distant familiarity of it all slightly struck you. you recalled, crawling up into the window seat and watching wild horses run, and how you, daella and rhae would sit on the floor and talk about heroes and rulers, they told you of aegon the conqueror in such detail you could smell their admiration from a mile away.
you did not, however, catch that ever so distant gleam of silver-gold hair, it was almost as if heβd become a myth, no one spoke of him. the tension in the air was notable, but not the way it used to be when Aerion would walk in. You hated to admit that youβd even looked around for him, that youβd already scanned the every room to the lengths of your eyesight just to learn that he probably couldnβt be bothered, and you felt pathetic for still hoping heβd greet you warmly.
After all, what more could you except from someone who disappeared without a word to you?
one thing about the red keep was that you could never sleep well for more than atleast two consecutive days.
it just so happened that tonight was no different from those in which sleep was something you could only helplessly yearn for. You tossed and turned and fussed over the sheets in your warm chambers, the pillows were drenched in a floral scent that burnt your nostrils, the fire in the hearth was still going, still making you sweat.
suffocating.
Outside was not the comforting, cold air of winterfell. you would not find the weirwood trees that blossomed with every snowflake that brushed its bark, you would not achieve the isolation you sought if you left now, kings landing never slept, if anything, it only woke at night.
you settled for taking a walk in the red keep during the hour of the wolf, it was late, very late, even kings landing had quieted down now. you could finally hear the wind whisper incoherently into your ears. your father had always told you to listen, listen to what the whispers had to say, no matter how many times youβd whined and told him that it was just wind, he never stopped going on about how the trees could speak to those who were patient enough to listen.
Now, you focused on it. the sound of the wind as it coursed through the leaves of the godswood, how it waltzed with the grass, how it circulated the faint smell of cottonwood and elm around you. Slowly, The whispers were starting to make sense, they just had to be louder, a bit louder and youβd understand them. then, you felt it. The whispers went dead silent, the leaves that fell to the grass were stepped on by a heavy boot, a man.
the woody scent shifted into something sharper.
youβd noticed almost immediately, but you didnβt dare turn back, to turn back was to surrender all those years youβd spent building yourself back up, mending the wall that stood between your heart and vulnerability. You silently prepared yourself, still and cold as stone.
βCan you hear them?β His voice was not much different from how you remembered it, the one youβd last heard moons ago.
Aerion. You refused to think of him even as he stood behind you, he remained a respectful distance from you, which youβd once thought was impossible for him.
you racked your brain for something to say, but the only things running through every nerve were questions. Where had he gone? Why didnβt he tell you? Why did he leave without a word to you?
You cleared your throat, shaking your head slightly to brush off all the impulsive words that clawed at your throat for escape.
finally, you turned to him.
he looked so different, though his hair hadnβt changed much. His features were sharper, all carved from marble itself, You remember how you longed to hold his face as children.
Despite giving your brain ample time to think, it still gave you no sensible reply. You were desperate to find something now, something to say thatβd make him feel like you didnβt wait a decade and more for his return.
the sadness youβd waited and prepared for never came, instead, a bitter tinge of anger and disgust seeped into your bones and slowly withered them.
βHave you no shame? Leaving me for years with nothing to say? No ravens-no letters. Nothing!!β Your voice shook with the inability to control yourself. Aerion expected no less, he knew youβd be furious, but seeing you so angry always made something warm stir inside him.
He never was much of a romantic, he wasnβt a chivalrous knight in shining armor like Valarr, he was nowhere near a kind merciful prince, but seeing you angry at him, of all people, was something he couldnβt bear to see.
Even now, after all the time you two had spent apart, he couldnβt bring himself to tell you the truth; That he hadnβt spent a single day of his exile not thinking of you.
You were there in ashford, you witnessed the trial of seven. arguing with Aerion in the armory and trying to talk him out of it, Words were said, screamed, even. Nothing could stop Aerion from βproving his worthβ. It was a matter of honor, not his own, his houseβs honor. The glory of the house of dragons,
but where were their dragons now?
where was their glory now?
After what felt like a lifetime of silence, he shifted on his feet, he could barely keep his own emotions in check, how was he supposed to deal with yours? Your heart meant more to him than his own, but his ego was greater than all of kings landing, and admitting his love to you would burn the whole city.
βAre you still mad? Seven hells, Lyanna-β he scoffed, shaking his head before your hand fisted in the collar of his tunic.
βDonβt.β You bit, knowing that you couldnβt strangle him even if it were your only wish in this world. βYou left me here, alone, do you know what they did to my father? Do you know what they did to me?β Your voice was a whisper now. The fragility of your words was so obviously handed in rough, calloused hands that knew nothing of what to do with them.
βYou told me you would never leave me, you said theyβd do me no harm, Aerion, you lied!β You let go of his tunic as if heβd burnt and repulsed you at the same time.
βDonβt blame me for your fatherβs death, you know my presence wouldβve changed nothing.β That earned him a slap to his face. You flexed your hand, realizing youβd hit him harder than you thought you could.
you expected him to leave again, flee off to wherever heβd come from and never return, instead he stepped closer, the sting of your palm a reminder of how angry you truly were. Heβd always encouraged this side of you. when everyone else fought to keep it down, he always brought out those ugly feelings that consumed your body and mind whole.
βIt was poison, no one believed me but it was. The boltons poisoned him in his own house, And you were off fucking some whore in the free cities.β He was silent, for what could he have said that would erase your pain? All the love, the guilt and sorrow and regret, it would only cause destruction.
you blinked hard. so hard you saw colorful shapes under your closed eyes, willing away the tears that welcomed themselves in the familiar ducts of eyes that had seen far too much.
βI did not ask for exileβ
βBut you so willingly left, Aerion!β You were yelling now, only twisting his thoughts further with your shaking hands. You wanted to throw him out of your mind, you wanted to fling yourself off the high hill. βYou left without any reluctance as if you had nothing to lose!β
he grabbed your wrist in a desperate attempt to ground himself. His voice was barely hiding his frustration, a whisper only you could hear. The words nothing more than a breath against your ear, βDid I?β
For a moment, You didnβt dare move, it was best not to when he was mad. The revolting reminder of his control over you alone made you want to choke him.
βWhy are you here?β He hissed, his free hand clamped down on your jaw now, forcing your grief-stricken eyes to his manic ones.
βItβs Valarr.β
his eyebrows knit together. βWhat of him?β
you wanted to see him hurt, you wanted to see the look on his face when he realized that you werenβt going to wait on him forever.
you wanted to know if he still cared.
Never in your life had you wanted to see someone you love be aggrieved in such way, he wasnβt allowed to be in control, even though they were his hands which held you so tightly, as if you were the cure to an illness heβs suffered from his entire life
he was going to pay for his false promises and empty words.
βAnswer me, woman.β He shook your arm aggressively
βLet go of me!β You snapped, his grip on you did not falter, but it did loosen slightly.
Your throat was tight, the rush of blood thundering through your ears, the wind and grass had stilled. βHeβs my betrothed.β You trailed off.
he waited a few moments, tongue trailing the inside of his cheek. You knew heβd never hurt you on purpose, but you never could anticipate his actions when he was truly mad.
He wasnt exactly sure where it all went wrong again, it wasnβt a terrible thing, you and Valarr. Heβd be nice to you, but would he hide the temper in you? Would he ever vex you just to see you flushed and angry? Aerion was unruly, yes, but he was not blind. he knew you were doing this on purpose, yet despite all his efforts to maintain indifference with you, he was angry.
He was mad at himself, for not telling you everything, for not kneeling at your feet and begging for forgiveness like the dog he was. He was mad at you for betraying him and marrying his cousin, a perfect man who aerion was always compared to. More than that, he was furious at Valarr, for taking what was his and only his. Youβd been aerionβs since the moment you bumped into his arms as kids while running from the other kids while playing knight. The years had not altered his claim on you at all, instead, it only made him more possessive.
he didnβt say anything, he didnβt need to. You knew how mad he was just be the look in his eyes, his fingers twitched on your jaw, but he didnβt move, deep purple eyes glaring into yours with a ferocity one would only find in an animal.
Then, he tugged your wrist toward him, his grip on your jaw tightened so hard you were sure itβd bruise.
his lips were on yours in a blur, ravenously devouring your mouth in a hungry claim. You attempted to free yourself from his iron grip, nothing worked. His hand moved from your wrist to lock itself around your waist, the hand on your jaw shifted to the back of your head, his fingers threaded through your wind-tussled hair and held your head in place.
Fighting back proved useless, you didnβt kiss him back but you made no attempt to give in either, not until he bit your lip so hard you whimpered at the taste of iron invading your mouth.
he pulled back when both of your lungs started to burn and you began scratching at his chest harshly for air. He leaned his forehead against yours, panting and greedily stealing all the air around the two of you. Your brain was completely blank, you werenβt exactly in the present but not absentminded either.
a sharp sting near your lower neck brought you back to reality, Aerion was biting it. His teeth sunk into your skin with thinly veiled desperation, causing you to suck air in from your teeth.
regaining your senses, you shoved his chest, pushing him out of your way and storming off. Evidence of his claim, his mark. It all made you sick. You were betrothed, to be married come spring. You couldnβt go around kissing all the princes of the realm.
by the time youβd reached your chambers, sleep took hold of you the second you closed the door. Dragging your tired feet past cold floor and soft rugs, you shrugged off your cloak and threw it somewhere, you hoped it didnβt fall in the hearth.
you wished for nothing more than to forget this. Forget everything that happened, you didnβt leave your chambers, you did not know Aerion had come back from exile after so many years, there was no aching bruise on your chest.
you didnβt wish it was him you were promised to instead.

Synopsis: Raised within the Red Keep alongside Princes Aerion and Valarr, Lyanna shared a deep bond with Aerion before his sudden departure left her believing she had been forgotten. Years later, his return forces her to confront the feelings she never lost, while Valarrβs devotion leaves her torn between a love from the past and the life she is bound to.
warnings: eventual smut, language, love triangle, kissing, biting, angst/slight comfort, kiiinda ooc aerion, Readerβs stepfather is an asshole.
A/N: my first ever fic hehe good luck reading this, readerβs character is inspired Sansa stark (I love her to death), probably a lot of historical inaccuracies, alsooo not entirely proofread. Enjoyyy

POSSESSION (1981) dir. Andrzej Zulawski
"If I were orpheus I wouldn't look back"
But we look back everyday- rechecking emails, making sure a friend is still behind you, checking to see if you remebered to pick up your keys. It's second nature, a habit of care.
It was second nature for him too. He looked back, not out of weakness, but love. For what is love, if not to look back?
