FARIEDA NAZIER AND ALBERTA WHITTLE
03.10 – 11.10.2014
In a series of performative actions the artists Farieda Nazier and Alberta Whittle will contest the visible and invisible boundaries in Johannesburg. Using the physicality of the body and its appearance as markers for access, identity, this performance functions as an intervention intended to challenge the “accepted narrative, which insists on an economic and social hierarchy of pilgrimage and aspiration".
Performances will take place on the following dates:
Opening Reception & Performance (part 1): Friday, 3 October 2014 from 16h30 Performance (part 2): Saturday, 4 October 2014 from 10h00 - 16h00 at ROOM Performance (part 3): Carpet Series Episode # 5: Friday, 10.10.2014, from 16h30 at ROOM Performance & Closing Party (part 4): Saturday, 11 October 2014 from 10h00 - 16h00 at ROOM

ROOM presents:
DEAN HUTTON
At the 2014 Edition of the FNB Joburg Art Fair, A body of work titled
Dean's Bed
Booth 12
22 - 24.08.2014
FNB Joburg Art Fair
Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg
Dean's Bed is Love, intimacy, dreams, longing, conceit, queer, identity, authenticity and beauty.
It is made with people, not of subjects - Chosen family, old friends, new friends, artists. Working, playing, with the participants to reveal, but not capture, ultimate expressions of self… a naked… bare self that holds agency. Shifting photographer to participant, creating relationships and abandoning distance. Making Love.
Like much of the artist's work, this series of intimate portraits challenges what is "normal" outside of binary concepts of gender, embracing fluidity and a comfortable expression of difference.
Alongside the selected large scale photographs, ROOM in association with Dean Hutton will also launch an exclusive collection of limited edition prints of the entire body of work.
Dean Hutton (b. 1976, ZA) is a genderqueer photojournalist and artist who lives and works in Johannesburg. Ongoing concerns include: Portraiture as co-authorship, Social media as narrative, Technology as self-reflection, Private narratives, Public conceits & Queer identity as Body of Work.
For more information on the artist and her work visit : http://www.2point8.co.za/
FNB Joburg Art Fair Opening Hours:
Friday 11am - 8pm
Saturday 10am - 7pm
Sunday 10am - 5pm
A List for Remembering: Cataloging of curious coincidences is an ongoing series of studio light observations which started in Switzerland while on residency at PROGR in 2013. These and new studies will be added to the collection for the duration of the exhibition at ROOM, exploring the notion of light in the visible and invisible documentation of everyday studio process and practice. Experiments are left ongoing, works exist in process and are protected under constant observation - the marking and acknowledging of time and the depiction of that action.
ROOM presents an exhibition of new photographic works by
