Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda (2017), dir. Stephen Nomura Schible
dear me,
I think I’m falling in love with you.
so abstract, a work of art.
only an artist will understand how beautiful chaotic you are.
a walking contradict, and you own it so well.
I love how you are learning you. With each layer being peeled back, you’re no longer afraid to swim the deepest of the deep, releasing things that no longer fit you.
I feel you feeling.
I feel you greeting your light while acknowledging your darkness with empathy and not fear.
We’ve come a long way, something you should be proud of.
gratitude. gratitude. gratitude. nothing but gratitude.

In the last episode of ATLA season 1 during the time the moon spirit was dead only Yue's eyes, the ocean spirit, and fire having colour:
How did you work to become a freelance artist? Any tips?
I didn’t have an interest at first, but it was likely a lack of knowledge about the field. I interned for illustrator Bill Mayer for two years. He has a large variety of clients from different markets. I fell in love with editorial in specific. The projects he got from magazines and newspapers were exciting and quick. There was no time to get bored with them. So I gave it a shot.
My first big job was for Tor.com, art directed by Irene Gallo. Through a few degrees of separation, she took notice of my work and commented something very positive about it publicly. By coincidence, I was flying to NY a weekend or two after that happened. We met at a Society of Illustrators student show and I gave her my card along with a questionable first impression. She called me for a job a week later. I got very dizzy.
From that point on, more art directors started noting my work and projects started flowing. And now, to answer your question, I’ll list the few things that have worked for me:
1- Lose the fear of putting yourself out there. You’re an artist and a communicator. If you’re afraid of expressing yourself, you’re afraid of doing your job!
2- Be polite, friendly, and responsible. Nobody wants to work with an illustrator that’s either rude or irresponsible. That illustrator will make any art director look bad.
3- Pick your clients wisely. Self awareness of your abilities will help you find a market where those skills are necessary. Then target that market like your life depends on it… cuz it kinda does.
4- Develop a healthy web presence (this follows #1). Talk about your art and allow people to get to know you and your work. Be aware of and fervently express where you stand as an artist.
5- Get social. Going to events and meeting artists will help people remember you. It increases the probabilities of art directors calling you when they need a problem solved.
Keep in mind that you must take all this with a grain of salt. What works for me won’t necessarily work for everyone. In fact, my friends and I are constantly comparing strategies. A good example is sending postcards. Most of my friends get work from those. I’ve gotten maybe one or two, and keep in mind I’ve sent thousands. So, like I said, take it all with a grain of salt and employ some trial and error. Eventually you’ll find what best works for you.

‘you say rude, i say honest’ troy copeland ph by nicole maria winkler for wonderland magazine
do you ever think about how many people in history were attracted to people of the same gender – people you know, history book names, poets and authors and film stars and war heroes and kings – and you only learn about this years and years after you learn about them and it socks you in the gut? do you ever think about how it’s this vicious cycle where these names from history are erased, these parts of people are erased, so we don’t even learn that it’s possible that other people could be Like This – and then you crush down the part of yourself that could be Like This because it’s not a real thing, everyone in history has been straight and it’s just you that’s the anomaly.
like, this idea that being anything except straight is this brand new thing. being gay was invented twenty years ago and before that it was just books and books and books of women falling in love with men. but it wasn’t. there were people like you. there were always people like you, and you can only learn this through scraps of paper passed under the table by other terrified kids on the internet. it breaks my goddamn heart. this erasing. these loves cut out, just in case a high schooler reading a history book looks at it and goes oh.
#the fact that we go sifting through journals and poems and anecdotes #looking for SCRAPS of something #that shows that these people who meant something to us #could be like us. maybe. #that poet might really understand you. that actor might have meant what they did on tv. #this sad desperate archaeology of need

The brief for this commission was along the lines of “just make him hot.”
Love it.
(The past month was a whirlwind of irl stuff—sorry for the distinct lack of art!!)
