“A lot of people would say it’s very improbable that I would make it to this point in my life. I made it here because I wasn’t discouraged. I worked hard to get here, took advantage of every opportunity I had, I would really like to encourage First Nations youth to be leaders in their communities, be proud of your heritage, and don’t be discouraged from the improbable.”

Carey Price (Ulkatcho First Nation) won the Vezina Trophy at the NHL Awards. He also won the Hart Trophy as Most Valuable Player and Ted Lindsay Award as most outstanding player. He is the goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens.

When talking about cultural appropriation its hard not to think back to all the classic rock era. Multiple songs about "indians" hit the top of the charts. In the classic "Indian Sunset", Elton John takes on the personal of an Indian man and sings from a position of true empathy. Take a listen:

"Cowboys and Indians" only seem to have a negative history together. However, Guy Weadick, founder of the Calgary Stampede, invited all tribes of Treaty 7 Nations to camp at the first Exhibition in 1912. His gesture played an important role in the celebration and promotion of indigenous cultures in Alberta. The Indian Village remains to be a large part of the celebrations where the same nations compete in contests, pow-wow, meat cutting, and story telling. Here are some of the posters of the Calgary stampede through out the years.

'The Last Indian Market' by Cara Romero

The Buffalo Man, seen in the centre of this image, in the seat of Jesus, is considered to be a pop icon for many contemporary Native artists working in Santa Fe. This piece marks the collision between Native artists and European art histories, seen in the appropriation of the composition of Da Vinci’s Last Supper. The change of cultural context makes the viewer stop and reconsider the many symbols and metaphors within the image.

This image is a collaboration between Cara Romero and the Buffalo Man (Marcus Amerman).

Title: Comfort

Jim Logan describes this piece as Comfort because he is depicting life on reserves where often children are taking care of children due to absent parents because of issues steaming from residential schools, alcohol abuse, and low income.

I worked for an oil and gas company which had this piece as apart of its collection. It was hanging outside my office and I decided to take it down. I chose to do this because I did not want to offend any Aboriginal contractors or Chiefs that would potentially come to our offices for meetings etc. This piece made me think about appropriate venues to showcase art. What do you think? Should an oil and gas company have this piece in their collection? Or should it remain in galleries only to be analyzed, interpreted and critiqued by the art world?

At the end of last year, Adrian Raeside submitted this cartoon to the Times Colonist for publication, following the new Victoria city mayor’s oaths in office. Although his intention was not to publicize a racist viewpoint, audiences interpreted this image as a slander against First Nations communities, and those who take time to consider the concerns of and support those communities. After a tirade of public outcry, from both indigenous and settler-ally communities, Adrian published a statement in response, clarifying his intentions: "The cartoon is about the empty mouthing of a mantra that appeases the non-indigenous conscience without any meaningful effort to make things better. It is a perfunctory statement not backed by action." Personally, I feel that acknowledgement of host territories is an important display of cultural sensitivity, as well as an act of reconciliation, not merely an empty gesture devoid of impact. I agree that acknowledgement of host territories is an important display of respect and cultural sensitivity. However, I understand how it may be seen as a ‘mantra’ reeled off by politicians and others without any real intent and understanding. The acknowledgement of the host territories should come hand in hand with the respecting of the host Nations cultures and world views, for example, protecting the land and the environment. There needs to be positive action rather than just acknowledgement.

I feel like this discussion can be steered into the direction of the Canadian government’s apology in 2008 for residential schools. It is one thing to acknowledge and apologise for what has been done, but the important move towards reconciliation consists of action. This sense of the apology being the start of a new chapter for the relationship between Canada and Aboriginal peoples, rather than an end. The importance of action and moving forward together was discussed by the representatives from Aboriginal groups such as Phil Fontaine, national chief of the Assembly of First Nations, Patrick Brazeau of the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, Mary Simon of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Clement Chartier of the Métis National Council, and Beverley Jacobs of the Native Women’s Association of Canada, but also by certain politicians involved in the apology such as the Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion, Gilles Duceppe of the Bloc Québecois and Jack Layton of the NDP.

Personally, I think the cartoon is effective in demonstrating how the repetition of phrases can become futile when no positive action follows.

Acknowledge: to accept or admit, the existence or truth of.

I think that we are admitting the existence of people who's traditional livelihood was depending on this territory. Unfortunately, there is absolutely no intent on reconciling for that lost territory.

It will play into the politics of recognition. In city halls, legislatures, and parliament hill; acknowledgment will be used only as a preface before convening business-as-usual. It will become a political convention used to legitimize the the states jurisdiction over land.

Acknowledging territory is simply not enough.
