The Smarter Business LOL! Text volumes drop for the first time. According to a new report published by Deloitte this week, the volume of old-fashioned texts sent in 2013 drops as web-based instant message services grow in popularity. The number of text messages sent in the UK fell for the first time last year. For over two decades text messaging has grown year-on-year influencing language, mobile networks profits and the way we communicate. Itâs thought texts sent last year fell by 7bn to 145bn messages, and predicted to fall to 140bn this year. The main reason for the fall is believed to be the rise of instant messaging such as WhatsApp and Snapchat, and of course Social Networks such as Facebook and Twitter. With Facebook lunching is own standalone messaging app, even the established players are trying to re-invent themselves to capture more of this market. The head of telecoms research at Deloitte, Paul Lee, said: âThis is the first decline in texting in the UK since texting was invented. We have reached a tipping point. But the usage of mobile phones to send messages is stronger than ever. This year, trillions of instant messages will be sent in place of a text message.â This trend began in the US and is now spreading worldwide. The report claims that 160bn instant messages were sent in Britain last year, outstripping the number of texts for the first time. By the end of 2014, 300bn instant messages will be sent â more than twice the annual number of texts.Globally, Lee predicts 50bn instant messages will be sent each day â 18 trillion over the next 12 months â compared with 21bn texts. But the trend is not being driven by young people alone, according to the report, the age of the silver smartphone is beginning, when a critical mass of over-55s venture into the world of mobile computing by acquiring their first touchscreen handsets. The dawn of instant messaging and immediate response is here, and its clearing becoming an important consideration when planning to use new channels to engage with your staff and customers. Is your business ready? The post LOL! Text volumes drop for the first time. appeared first on The Smarter Business.

Arming the CMO with the Tools for Mobile Marketing Success
Wanted to share this from the IBM Smarter Planet Blog Arming the CMO with the Tools for Mobile Marketing Success Josh Rochlin, CEO, Xtify By Josh Rochlin As consumers around the globe increasingly turn to mobile devices to buy products, connect with their favorite brands, and discover new ones, they are fundamentally altering the role of the CMO. Today it is crucial for CMOs to arm their organizations with tools to capture mobile consumersâ attention, influence their intent, and engage them with relevant content. The key to mobile commerce success is delivering relevant, actionable content at the right time to improve mobile sales, drive in-store traffic, and engage customers. With todayâs announcement of IBMâs acquisition of Xtify, a leading provider of cloud-based mobile messaging tools, IBM is expanding its mobile capabilities to include mobile campaign creation, content targeting, dynamic real-time segmentation, and analytics for all mobile devices and browsers. AMC Movie Theaters push notifications to consumers about special offers available with the purchase of tickets. Xtifyâs campaign management platform helps marketers engage, convert, and retain mobile application users and web site visitors by notifying consumers when new or relevant content, promotions, and service alerts are available. For instance, if Iâm within a few blocks of my favorite big-box retailer here in New York, the store can notify me about a new shipment from my favorite tablet manufacturer. The possibilities extend far beyond retail. For example, when I step off a plane in Chicago, my hotel concierge can welcome me with an SMS or push notification, letting me know that my room is ready or the location of the nearest coffee shop (along with a coupon for a free snack). The list of possibilities goes on and on. Mobile communication channels are completely transforming the way organizations interact with their customers. For example, worldwide, there are more than 300,000 mobile applications and more than 3 billion app âeventsâ that occur each day including application download, ticket purchases from mobile web sites, and leveling-up on a game. Consequently, consumers are using mobile applications and web sites for everything â researching products and services, tracking online purchases, gaining new knowledge and transacting business, filling prescriptions, paying bills, and booking vacations, to name a few. Theyâre also receiving information and services on their devices about everything from local events such to road closures. Such penetration and adoption has changed consumer expectations. Today, people are starting to expect personalized messages and relevant promotional offers based on their expressed interests, shopping history, and browsing habits across the totality of their digital interactions with a brand. Together, Xtify and IBM will provide marketers a new opportunity for deep client engagement anytime, anywhere, as consumers traverse across multiple digital channels â browsing in-stores, shopping on mobile web sites, or accessing mobile apps. Xtify will be available on IBM SoftLayerâs cloud infrastructure, which provides the means to deploy broadly and globally in a way that will continue to ensure that we provide the most secure, scalable, and reliable service in the market. We are just beginning to see the endless opportunities mobile applications and web sites can afford. Xtifyâs mobile messaging capabilities combined with IBMâs analytics and cloud infrastructure will provide marketers with global reach and an arsenal of rich content targeting capabilities to influence and inform increasingly mobile consumers.
"I believe humans advanced so much faster than the rest of the animal kingdom, because we had a far superior way of learning from each other â that we could observe, listen and not have to experience an event to learn from it. Our technology today will enable our ability to co-Âlearn on an exponential scale.â INSIDE THE INVENTIVE MIND: Nancy Greco IBM Watson Researcher
