It had become almost routine for Josefina to close out her work week with a movie night - a way to destress from the hectic week. And this weekend was no different. She had three different boxes of candy cradled in her arms - she’d already signed up for her spin class the following morning anyways - and was holding two movies in her hands, attempting to decide between the two. She’d already seen 50 First dates but it had quickly become one of her favorites, but her coworkers hadn’t stopped talking about Eurotrip, so surely it had to be worth checking out.

"I'm so with you, I mean 50 First Dates is so great and I just smile the whole time I swear." She'd never considered Adam Sandler a romantic lead but he was proving her wrong one Drew Barrymore movie at a time. "Well might be worth catching up on it if you're feeling left out. I'd say it's not for everyone, but if you liked American Pie or Road Trip then you're probably good." Abbey had made the mistake of watching American Pie with her parents when she went home to visit family and that was a mistake to say the least.

he just nodded in response to her thanks, holding his little stack of movies in his hands and beginning to put them in their correct spots himself. just to take a little of the job off Abbey. "is it? what's it even about? digging holes?" he asked skeptically, giving her a sideways look from beside her. though he let out a laugh when she explained further. "oh shit, it is just about digging holes. wow, yeah, sounds... sounds riveting, Ab." he shook his head gently. "would Josh be into it? I don't think he's that big on, uh... manual labor-based movies, but I'll trust your judgement here. you're the expert."

Abbey giggled and shook her head, "Well yeah when you boil it down like that, it doesn't sound great." She waved her hand as if to bat away the comment about her expertise, even though she secretly loved it. "Probably, I mean it's Disney so it's not like it's that dark. There's more to it than digging. It's about this kid who's cursed and he gets sent to a juvy camp where they're made to dig loads of holes, but there's a reason to it and there's a bit of a western element going on, I don't want to give too much away though."

"Of course I did," she grinned, "I dressed up as her for Halloween when I was in college," she admitted. There were definitely some perks to being blonde if you were in the market to dress up. "Well then I think I'm definitely sold," she smiled. it seemed like the two of them had similar taste, so she made a mental note to ask for the woman's opinion next time she didn't know what to get. "I'm Ellie," she smiled.

"No way that's amazing! I bet you nailed it, you so have the look." Abbey grinned ear to ear, picturing her in that yellow tartan blazer and skirt. "Great! You'll have to tell me when you return it whether it lived up to my description." She hoped it would, Abbey always tried to tailor her recommendations to what she thought the customer would like but had gotten it exceptionally wrong in some cases. "I'm Abbey, have I seen you before? I feel like I've seen you before."

Abbey went through the stock in the back, it was badly organised and she huffed a sigh at her colleague's expense. After flicking through various dvd cases, the managed to find two copies of Mean Girls and headed out with both of them. "Found it!" She singsonged when back in the aisle with the other woman. "Here." Abbey handed over one case, putting the other back on the shelf. "Watch that be snatched up before the end of the night."

"Oh don't worry about it," Abbey waved her off, mostly because her manager was around and he'd probably be weird about letting a customer help clean up. "Ugh no way! That's so rude, but I'm not surprised because the little shits love hanging around here." Abbey rolled her eyes, sick of the teens hanging around the games section and hitting on her as if they had a chance. She stacked the last films back on the shelf and stood up. "Sorry they hit you though."

Abbey tried not to smile too much when the woman jumped at her presence. "Multiple romcom night is the best kind of movie night." She said in a tone of complete knowingness, channeling the tiny bit of movie authority she liked to think she had by working here. "What are the other options to go with it?" It sounded like a great time, Abbey wished she was doing the same instead of working but Friday night was always surprisingly busy on the movie rental front.

Ellie liked movies, she certainly wasn't a connoisseur, in fact her favourite movie was Legally Blonde, which she knew was horrendously cliched given her own 'look'. She also had a tendency to go with movies that had any kind of gymnastics in them, including Bring it On.

"It's worth it, trust me. Brittany Murphy is great. Did you see Clueless? She's the one that Cher tries to make over." Abbey explained. She'd been obsessed with that film when it came out, wishing she was the one with that amazing wardrobe visualiser. "And the kid is so funny. She was in a recent episode of Friends too, she's going places." Sometimes she wished her parents had made her a child star like Lindsay Lohan. "Oh this is totally up your street! There's lots of fun bits, but they're also helping each other move past things and learning together. It's sweet."

"I was skeptical when I heard they were remaking the show, but I love the films, they're so fun. Total girl power." Abbey grinned, "And I'm absolutely in love with Cameron Diaz's boyfriend in it, he's so cute." She enthused, perhaps getting a little too casual with the customers. "Oh that's been super popular since it went on sale." Abbey explained, gesturing with her hand at the recent releases. "Let me check though, because I might have some that haven't been put out yet. I'll be right back." Abbey quickly just pushed back a dvd that was balancing precariously against the shelf before heading off to check the back.

generally when Riley was here, it was with Joshua in tow. his kid loved spending half an hour looking at the movies all the shelves, having Riley hold about fifteen of them at once until he gently reminded his son that they were only getting three at max. this time, though, it was just him - Josh was at his mom's, and Riley was half looking for something to keep him busy that evening, and half loitering just to say hi to Abbey.

"Thanks," She smiled over at him, he didn't have to help but Riley was sweet like that and she was grateful every time he showed that side of himself. "I mean you're right, it is kind of weird. But in a fun way rather than a fever dream way." Abbey laughed as she pressed her hands onto her knees and stood up, rubbing her hands on her jeans. "I mean, they dig a lot of holes. It's pretty apt. Plus it's based on a book which I have not read, but is apparently good, if that matters to you at all."

the girl that gave up the free seat seemed very unbothered and friendly about it, which would have likely been a pleasant relief for anyone else. Tomas sort of wished she had been a typical New Yorker about it - simply ignored him without even a glance and quietly allowed him to sit there. but still, he sat down next to her anyway, thankful for the break from the turbulant ride.

"I know right, you can get some real weirdos on here. Especially at night, ugh." She faked a shudder before laughing. Abbey gave a curt nod. "Deal." For a moment she returned to her ipod, swirling her finger around the touch pad, clicky sounds coming through the headphones. "Surely you don't have a long way to go though, right? Cause standing that long would kill me." Abbey dramatised, though there had been times when it had been packed and she'd been forced to stand. She'd been wearing heels and it had been miserable.

Commutes had become so much better when iPods were invented. Abbey's walkman skipped constantly on the subway, and when she walked, or if she moved at all, really. The frustration had melted away and travel was far more enjoyable these days, which was good because it felt like she spent half her life trapped in these cramped little trains with a hundred other moody commuters.
