I will be doing a drawing demo this weekend for Kumoricon, which is a convention in Portland, Oregon that celebrates anime and Japanese culture. ⁠ ⁠ ⁠ It will be held online this year as DigiKumo for free.⁠ ⁠ ⁠ My drawing demos will be at 9:30PM PST Saturday Nov 7th and 1:30PM PST Sunday Nov 8th. Chadwick Boseman went on to glory last Friday. He was an actor who played strong black men in movies. Some of those men existed in real life like Thurgood Marshall, Jackie Robinson, and James Brown. One only existed as a comic book character – The Black Panther; King T'Challa. He brought that character to life on the big screen and helped created a cultural phenomenon. Comic books are an integral part of my life. I learned how to read from comics. Comics helped make me who I am today. I didn't know I was growing up in a time of firsts. The first black person to do this and that, etc. I was the first person in my family to graduate from college. When I was younger, I wasn't aware of these firsts. Such as, I didn't know Black Panther was the first black superhero. I learned later about that and many others. The first Avengers movie was the comic book movie the 12-year-old boy in me had been waiting for all of his life. The Black Panther movie was the movie I never expected to see. I never even dreamed of it. Chadwick Boseman led other black actors into bringing the world I had only read about to life. He was regal, proud, and strong. Turns out he was a hero in real life too, as he was undergoing cancer treatment while he made that and five other movies. Seeing him play the black Panther was very inspiring and uplifting to me. Knowing what he went through privately has touched me on a very personal level. I was shocked and devastated to find out he was gone. So young, with so much more to contribute to the entertainment and real world. Thanks for helping this little kid and many more to see black people as superheroes.
