Zuko and Katara were in the south, and they looked to the sky and saw auroras.

Zuko: Aang leaving the spirit portals open was pretty smart since we now get to see all of this every day and every night.

Katara: Yeah. It's beautiful. You know, we used to have a festival called the Glacier Spirits Festival. The festival used to be a solemn time of fasting and meditation. When this festival was founded, it would bring our tribes together and restore the ancient balance between our world and that of the spirits. The tribal elders would commune with the spirits. People would watch the brilliant displays of light as spirits danced in the sky.

Zuko: Wow, I've never seen that.

Katara: You can thank the 100-year war and the closed portals for that. But both problems are solved now.

Zuko: Thanks to Aang.

Katara: With our help.

Zuko: You think you'll start the Glacier Spirits Festival again?

A love letter to Zutara.

I wonder if northern/southern lights remind Zuko of the dragons

ZUTARA WEEK - DAY THREE: Aurora

Honestly, I went back and forth between this prompt. At first, I wanted to parallel Disney's Sleeping Beauty with Zuko and Katara, but that plan failed (😭). It was pretty difficult with all the overlays I was trying to experiment with, so I went with my second plan: the Aurora Borealis. I didn't have a strict, thought out draft for what I was doing, but I quickly got it done with the idea in mind that I wanted to make it seem like a watercolor painting. I wanted something more delicate that represents the spiritual aura of an Aurora Borealis, while keeping in mind Zuko and Katara's intricate relationship.

Avatar: Aang, the Last Airbender

She’s trying to reestablish the dynamic they had in season one where they were enemies because of their roles in the war (Katara: protector of the Avatar, Zuko: hunter of the Avatar). That’s a time when things between them weren’t complicated and she didn’t feel as strongly about him as she does now. But she can’t. It’s personal now and it’s really not about Aang. Because, quite literally the next day, Zuko and Aang go off alone with absolutely no pushback from her. She makes a few snarky comments about Zuko’s bending, but she’s not even a little bit worried about how this is the perfect rouse to get Aang alone and harm/capture him.

Aang was the externalization of Katara’s hope, but in the crystal catacombs, that hope began to shift to Zuko. Him siding with Azula and then Aang subsequently dying was a representation of Katara’s hope in both of them being shattered. She brings Aang back to life, but he can’t access the Avatar State (what her hope really resides in). And then Zuko comes back too. This time he is changed, he is better, he is doing everything she hoped for in Ba Sing Se. But, it’s too painful to think about because of the betrayal, thinking that she wasn’t enough to convince him to stay (abandonment issues rearing it’s head) and so she clings to anger and pushing him away so that she doesn’t get hurt again.

Summary:

okay i have a fic coming down the pike for zutara week day 3 but i couldn't help myself and made this little doodle of kya (zuko and katara's firebender) who is legendary in the SWT for being the princess who can create the southern lights with her hands

it's kind of a reworking of a much older piece but i like how this one turned out because she looks like a constellation :^)
