You entered my life slowly, gradually, mind-numbingly gently.
And you left suddenly, unexpectedly, painfully.
You gave me love. You gave me hope. You gave me life.
And as a parting give you gave me despair. You gave me pain. You gave me desolation.
We started with the dreams of our future, the memories of happier moments, the sanity of each other’s company.
We ended with lonely birthdays, quiet holidays, barren celebrations.
From the smiles, the laughs, the joyfulness, and carelessness.
To the tears, the nightmares, the empty heart, and noisy brain.
They say you never really know what you have until it’s gone.             Â
Well, I never knew what I needed until you were gone.
Because, they say if you love someone you should let them go.
Then you must’ve loved me more than I did.
I don’t know if God put you on this Earth just for me.
But I do know God put you through this just for me.
For what better of a love is there than the one that breaks you down.
Only to allow yourself to build you back up.
See, I didn’t think I was ready for this. I mean, who ever admits they are?
I begged, I cried, I prayed for you to stay. Only to realize I was speaking to the nothingness.
My heart jumped at every call, brain froze at every knock, throat closed at every text.
Now new life flows through my veins, mindfulness has found a home in my head, and peace in my heart.
Something that never came from you.
You cleansed my entire being with the sterilizing fire of agony.
And taught me how to love myself.
You’ve taught me that true love doesn’t have to mean we’re together
For I’ll always love you, even from a distance.
I’m now at a better place than I’ve ever been before. Every new day that I encounter isn’t filled with regret but rather bursting with life. Coursing through my body is a feeling of hope, refilled anew with every sunrise and sunset. The pains of my unrequited love don’t harm me anymore; I wear them proudly as scars of a battle that opened up the world for me to conquer. Call me Alexander, call me Caesar, call me anything you want.
I used to live my life waiting for whatever was next, waiting for something that never actually arrived, reaching for an inaccessible specter that I never seemed to be able to catch. Life hollowed out in dreams unattainable. Journeys mired with marches of misery among the masses perennially pondering the problems of my perpetual predicaments.
We all construct these images of how our lives should be. The spouse. The job. The mid-sized SUV to fit your children in. But we never construct the experiences that shape the mold that we become. No one expected what would happen between us. You broke off the predictable pathway that was laid out before us. You gave no warning and, like a darkened lighthouse that guides the vessel to shore, crashed me beyond the depths of the Earth.
See, everyone wants what they want.
And few ever want what they need. Because if we ever needed what we wanted Then we wouldn’t get what we need.
So here’s my open letter to you thanking you for it all. For you ripped my flesh from my bone and my being from my body; you left me tattered, battered, and bruised. But that is what is needed in life, to not be one with your body. For your mind is not you and you are not your mind.
I needed all this, so thank you. I would have never asked for this, so thank you.
So, for the cruel one who yanks my heart out by which I live… te cultivo una rosa blanca. I tend a white rose for you which I place in the vaults of my life, a deposit never to be withdrawn.
For you gave me life. You gave me being. You gave me me.
I will never be able to pay you back, but I can always say thank you.
So, with all my love and gratitude- thank you.
