“I was, when I arrived in Hollywood, a very prim and proper Yankee girl. Wore no makeup, except for a touch of lipstick, and no sexy clothes. Was obviously and innocent in the whole area of sex. I didn’t seem to measure up in my own mind to the image of a typical actress. So to offset this weakness socially, I learned to smoke, which made me feel very sophisticated.”
