PRAY FOR KOREA #gwanghwamun2015
Yo okay. So I really hate to add more sorrow after what has happened /is happening in this world, but my country is going through shit right now, right this minute.
Some people may or may not know that our current “wow-progressive-female-president” is actually the entire opposite. Not only is she the daughter of a past dictator in Korea (this is actually the least of her flaws), but also 1) gender equality has actually flunked - Korea is last out of 37 OECD countries in gender wage gap (aka has the largest gap), 2) job market isn’t doing any better, and most current/recent is 3) attempt to revamp the history textbooks.
Now, you might wonder, what’s so bad about #3. Think of whitewashing-american-textbooks-bad but on a national level.
The government one day announced that it believes that all history books should be revamped because there’s too much inconsistency among the various versions. Okay, that’s reasonable. But here’s where people started to get on the edge: the government said it was “thinking” of it, but they had actually finished planning it and was into the final touches.
And in more detail, people (including myself) are expressing complaints because the government is the inconsistent one. Apparently, anything that is too “pro North Korea” needs to be edited out. And yet, “pro dictators” (aka the current president’s father) and “pro (imperialist)Japan” is fine.
The inconsistencies don’t end there.
At this very moment,
People are trapped in a subway station and police are filling it up with teargas
Outside in the streets, police are aiming teargas/water cannons at protesters (and random passerbys)
They even deliberately aimed at an ambulance that had a 70-yo man who got a concussion from the blasts (the hospital says he’s in dire condition)
Media are calling the protesters a violent mob and blaming them for sudden traffic and disaster: one reported that protesters held one policemen hostage, another (a police fb page) showed citizens breaking the police buses.
BUT the police had surrounded the protesters before the legal and authorized rally (you can register so in Korea) had started - already effectively making traffic, and shot the water cannons at the citizens first
The worst/highest martial law(계엄령) given in Korea history is during the three dictators era, especially Jeon Du Hwan(전두환)’s time. The current president called for martial law just one degree below that.
And where’s our dear president right now? Fled to Turkey.
The most I can do (for now) is spread awareness. Please help signal boost.

Brazilian river Rio Doce, most important river in the state of Minas Gerais, declared officially dead due to the dams burst in the city of Mariana.
The disaster that happened in the city of Mariana, in the state of Minas Gerais, was unprecedented, with at least 9 people dead and 18 people disappeared counted so far. Furthermore, it is noticed that the environmental disaster caused by the dams burst is already putting an end to Rio Doce, the most important river of Minas Gerais. Specialists already declare it officialy dead. Laboratory analysis, ordered after the disaster, found particles of heavy metals such as lead, aluminum, iron, barium, copper, boron and mercury in the river’s water. Luciano Magalhães, director of SAAE (Autonomous Service Of Water And Sewer), organ responsible for the analysis, claimed that “it seems they’ve thrown the entire periodic table” into the river. According to him, the water has no more use at all and it’s improper for irrigation and animal and human consumption.
In addition to those heavy metals, the mud’s mere force has already devastated the river’s biodiversity forever. Environmentalists don’t discard the possibility that entire endemic species have been extinct by the mud. The ammount of mud is so huge that the river had its natural course blocked, which made it lose force and form little lakes that are also not going to last long, given that, in addition to the minerals, sewers, pesticides and agrochemicals are also being carried by the waters.
Fishermen of the region created the Noah’s Ark Operation to act in areas of Rio Doce’s hydrographic basins that haven’t been hit by the flood yet, using boxes, buckets, and plastic sheets to transfer fish to lakes with clean water. When visiting the places affected by the burst, Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff declared that the preliminary fine Samarco (mining company responsible for the dams) must pay for the environmental damage is going to be around R$250 million (US$65.01 million).
A document emitted by Minas Gerais’s Public Ministry, issued in October 2013 during the process of renewal of the concession license for Samarco, reveals that there were risks of disruption of the city’s dams. According to the text, the situation of the structure was not recommended because of possible erosion (such as cracks or openings) that could destabilize the dam of waste coming from the mining process.
“The waste dump [ground layer] requires low humidity and good drainage”, conditions that, according to the justice promoter Carlos Eduardo Ferreira Pinto, who analysed the report, are not found in dams like those that broke in Mariana, since they require high humidity to function as a water reservoir.
In this type of structures, there are infiltrations - that must be properly drained. The problem is when the drainage system of the infiltrated water fails and causes internal erosion in the dam.
The prosecutor has stated that a dam burst of this magnitude doesn’t happen by accident, even if there is a natural cause event. “What happened was negligence in the company’s operation, and that is what we are investigating”, Pinto said.
However, Hernani Mota de Lima, mine engineering professor at the Federal University of Ouro Preto (UFOP), has claimed that the climatic conditions of the region contradict the hypothesis of the Prosecutor.
“Today we are in a period of drought. Thus, the structure has no contact with moisture, which contradicts the 2013 report”, he describes. "But we must wait for the expert opinion”.
So far, there is no technical analysis stating the causes of the disaster.
Sources (in portuguese): x, x
A tragedy happened in Brazil this week, too, and tens of towns were buried in mud due to a error of a giant mining company managing and responsible for a dam. It’s called Samarco, half owned by the Brazilian Vale do Rio Doce and half owned by the Anglo-Australian BHP Billiton. It’s literally looking like Pompeii might have. Many people died, many other are lost, and thousands of people lost their homes and everything they knew of.
Please, also keep them in your thoughts. It’s not being reported anywhere internationally because said company really fucked up, it’s internationally influential and they’re trying to cover it and hide it away in any way they can. If you want to read about it, the district most heavily affected is called “Mariana”, in Minas Gerais. Please also keep Minas Gerais in your thoughts.
PLEASE REBLOG, PEACEFUL PROTESTERS WATER CANNONED IN SOUTH KOREA (14/11/15)
The citizens of South Korea are currently being oppressed with brute force by the government, Please reblog and help spread the word and bring awareness to the current situation
The recap:
Korea’s current PM, Park Geun hye has proposed to make complete alterations to the nation-wide textbook, consiting of heavily biased views about past events in order to manipulate and warp both history and it’s citizens. The new textbook condemns the Korean independence movement as well as glazing over the dictatorship of her father, erasing the history of thousands who were abused over his dictatoship.
A group of protestors, consisting mainly of uni and young high school students has decided to gather at Gwanghwamun for a PEACEFUL PROTEST (met all regulations, has been reported/notified to the police PRIOR the protest) when all areas leading to the area was cut off by police.
They have since fired WATERCANNONS (WATCH VIDEO) laced with capsaicin/tear gas (X) and oil, blasting at random at protestors AS WELL as ambulances and other volunteers trying to give first aid. A man has been blased in the face and is in critical condition while many others are injured or currently are being brutally mishandled by police. The tear gas used by the government has been notified to consist dangerous levels of capsaicin and 465.75 LITRES has already been spent already in close proximity of the protestors in just few hours. (Korea is also undergoing the worst drought in 40 years. Yay) BUT MOST OF ALL, THE GOVERNMENT IS HEAVILY CENSORING ALL THIS. They have censored the most popular website naver.com, erased all of the news headlines and refused to broadcast the current situation in all national TV news channels. We have no way of communicating without the censorship of the Government without depending on SNS.
Please share and help us from being silenced by this dictatorship.

PLEASE REBLOG
I’m a student of Republic of Korea, which is well known as the South Korea.
I’m feeling really sorry to know the pitiful, terrible terror issue in Paris.
But I’m here to beg you to know the truth that the democracy in South Korea is about to be destroyed. In South Korea’s Gwanghwa-moon, there were citizens who were having a peaceful protest craving for their reasonable and deserved rights, but the government ordered the police to suppress it with force. The police is blasting the demonstrators with water cannons with tear gas and capsaicin, and lots of protesters and innocent citizens passing by got fatal injuries. However the president is in overseas in name of international conference. South Korean president, the daughter of the dictator, is now suppressing South Korean citizens. The press and medias are on government’s side and they are announcing completely nothing about this protest and the repression using force. I’ll make it clear once more; SOUTH KOREAN PRESIDENT IS NOW SUPPRESSING SOUTH KOREAN CITIZENS. I want to keep Korea as a democratic country, all the more so because I love my country a lot. It doesn’t take more than a few seconds for reblogging. Please help us to keep Korea’s democracy. PLEASE pray for Korea.
Thank you.
