MURDOC ... on sexuality & gender.

including murdoc's sa in this is elemental to me. i do think representation matters , and i am tired of seeing it in general media from a , frankly , voyeuristic and perpetrator-centric point of view.
  [ ... ] obviously there are many ways in which his behavior in interviews and other media may be interpreted and most have their appeal , but these will be my 2 cents based on my portrayal and the revelations i have had throughout.
an important thing to keep in mind , is that murdoc was born in the 60ies , and his views are both shaped by the time he grew up in , as well as his experiences in a violent and neglectful household. especially the last point has been the topic of discussion several times on my blog.
in interviews and other animated bits , two expressions are equally prevalent in murdoc: the generic and stereotypical , over the top rock star persona , as well as the vocally and unapologetically queer social deviant. ( a little interjection: i do understand that his rock star persona is very overt satire on many famous individuals. but this is rp , so that is no fun at all. there are points to be made here , but this post is not about that. ) i do think it is perfectly sensible that the two of them coexist. i think arguing a 'true self' for people is quite tricky , and is a disservice to the many moving parts ones ego is made up of. murdoc's rock star persona is an answer to the abuse he experienced. from his father and half-brother ridiculing and bullying and beating him , to the abuse he experienced from his peers. it is overtly masculine in how it can be placed within heteronormative reading , and it is also just repulsive enough to make people writing him off as that guy , without having to let anyone know who he really is. it is also an amalgam of many of the people and bands he would look up to when he was young. again: murdoc grew up in the 60ies and 70ies. he got his impressions from music alone , from daydreaming , from rare radio interviews , from scavenged magazines and , if he was lucky , snippets from the telly. today we live in a world of information surplus , which is important to keep in mind.
on the other hand , murdoc does have a strong sense of self. an undeniable spirit and an incredibly high level of resilience. he was most certainly the type to lash out and flee , rather than retreat entirely into his shell. again , murdoc's mental state and how it fluctuates will be touched upon here , but not discussed in full detail as it would go beyond the scope of this little essay. yes , murdoc does lie to himself and to others , he has a high level of anxiety etc , but regardless his need for true inner expression is undeniable. as such , he did express himself early on and did explore his queer identity as a youth , which did get violently cut off by his dad. nonetheless , upon fleeing home for the first time , murdoc did liberally explore the scene in london and manchester. he challenged himself , and he hurt himself and i do think that , in part , he found himself also. and i do think that is where the part of persona later on comes into play very clearly , because it is the one part of his self-expression that murdoc himself would also describe as disingenuous: describing himself as a selfish prick with no principles whatsoever. nothing could be further from the truth , honestly. murdoc is a vocal advocate for the queer community , as well as many other causes for social justice. of course , he is still a prick for his asshole act.
i just think that , at the time , he didn't really have the means to heal. he has been hurt on such a deep level , and it was spilling over , spilling everywhere. the kind of hurt that you carry with yourself always , that leaves marks which are not at all easy to reconcile. not to mention that the only tools he knew were to hurt himself in one form or another. drugs , drink , sabotaging himself and his relationships , keeping the cycle he knew going on his own terms.
though being overt in his expression , i think that murdoc rejects labels for himself. there is still a baseline level of both queerphobia and misogynistic views embedded in him that are hard for him to detangle. and which would be silly not to address , as they are blatant. he does get better with the years , but those things are remnants from his childhood and youth , and as such deeply entangled with the abuse he experienced. murdoc has a very strong feminine side to him , which he does explore , though i don't think he would ever address it openly without intentionally putting himself down and negatively sensationalizing himself , simply because he cannot take the dissonance it creates in his mind. murdoc does really need that conversation with his own deep-seated shame. he's mean in drag though! and he knows it. he loves it , he really does. it's about time he deeply embraces it , too!
which is baseline for any interaction , though i would love to explore for him to really confront himself , and do it with someone who is patient with him. at his core , murdoc is a ball of anxiety and very , very distrustful of people. he is terrified of opening up , of being left alone , being ridiculed. of being misjudged and used. so these things are kept under lock and key , unless you take the time to gently open each lock. it still won't be pretty , but i think it could be beautiful!
