But I can assume that the game was dangerous enough that he couldn't risk emotions getting him and his friends all killed. 

Then you take into consideration that it was the game that gave him the powers to do this to himself in the first place.

I know that he fucked up his soul because of drama.

It was a cross between drama and the game itself.
