Personally, I think people miss out on why exactly Dan is popular, lol. It's not because he's funny, it's not because he's pretty, and it's not because he's shippable (although, all those things do actually help). He's popular because he's a really skilled and passionate storyteller, and because his emotional delivery is extremely on point. His humour isn't the main point, it just exists to smooth out the intensity of the storytelling.
And, he is an intense storyteller. His best videos aren't really funny, and his humour is a sense of self awareness of that intensity. It's interesting, but I feel like this is something people don't fully understand about his work. His best videos are the ones about how he fucked up at his job, and how his hamster escaped, and how harrowing that felt for him. All extremely emotionally intense stories from his life!
They make the viewer feel attached to him, they make us feel like we know him, like he's our close friend. His appeal is the fact that he's so open that he can get people to feel for him. It's not an easy thing to cultivate, and it is the reason he's as popular as he is. And, one of the biggest reasons that this isn't a part of the conversation is because he hasn't done anything like that for YEARS since BIG, his magnum opus. He doesn't want to do content like that, anymore, and that's also fine, ig (I'm crying about the loss of DINOF in my life, btw)

How Phil Nearly Died
After having spent a few shifts interning in the ER I know that when a 112 call is made and an ambulance is sent out an alarm goes off in the ER staff area and a screen shows the location and reason of the call so now I’m imagining that alarm sound going off with a little google maps pin and the text
“A+B+C+, 30M, swallowed glue”
Best explanation for the bad sex joke I could find was in some European countries during the WEDDING toast if you look away while the toast is happening it’s 7 years bad sex….which like boys what the fuck are we doing here?
there is too much for me to unpack here. so looking away means bad sex. but phil gets it wrong and says he thinks looking in the eyes of the person you're toasting means you're gonna have bad sex with that person. and dan looks away. bc he..... doesn't want bad sex with........ cool
In Germany too people make eye contact with you like THIS 👁️ _ 👁️ while toasting because it's seven years of bad sex if you don't, eye contact or not, so it's definitely a thing, but it has nothing to do with looking at who you're fucking lmfao
some dan fits
forever in awe of people who pay attention. people who wait for you while you tie your shoes while the others have walked away. when they continue listening intently while the rest of the group stopped listening. noticing your moments of silence when everyone else hasn’t. “this made me think of you” noticing things you never even noticed about yourself. people who say “text me when you get home safe.” people who make you laugh until you cry. childhood friends who keep in touch. people with genuine intentions. people who are soft when the world has given them every opportunity to turn hard. the “let’s get ice cream” at 3am friend. the turn up the music in the car and sing friend. people whose actions match their words. people who make the world feel less chaotic. kindred spirits. the trustworthy and honest. hard workers. good listeners. clear communicators. people who love you for who you are. people who don’t ask you to be anything other than yourself. people who choose you. people who stay.

Married Bickering: A Short Film
what i find really funny about the “phivorce” thing is that dan’s name is NOWHERE in there. its only phil + divorce
"dan and phil get married (real) (not clickbait)" = dab and evan's wedding
"dan and phil play courtroom simulator" = 50 minute real life wedding vlog

I was angry with my friend: I told my wrath, my wrath did end. I was angry with my foe: I told it not, my wrath did grow.
And I watered it in fears Night and morning with my tears, And I sunned it with smiles And with soft deceitful wiles.
And it grew both day and night, Till it bore an apple bright, And my foe beheld it shine, And he knew that it was mine,--
And into my garden stole When the night had veiled the pole; In the morning, glad, I see My foe outstretched beneath the tree.
- William Blake, A Poison Tree, Songs of Experience, 1974
