Bit of a different style today but I like how it turned out :3 itās really starting to feel like spring where I am so Iām projecting my springful whimsy onto Ralsei <3 no one deserves to frolic on a beautiful spring day more than her <3
Taking this as an opportunity to spread berdsei propagandaā SO. On one hand I did it for the funny but also I do think heād genuinely react this way
Berdly #1 āwow i didnt think id make it this farā-er and therefore would get immediately incredibly flustered if anyone showed reciprocal interest, and ralsei would fold and fall for anyone who showed her the slightest bit of attention lets be real <3 my sillys my goofies my looooserrsssss (affectionate)<3

Iāve decided I should probably share some of my personal/professional work here instead of just fanart, and I just wrapped up my thesis so here it is! These are character portraits for a mafia-esque card game Iām still wrapping up production on (and will be selling copies of when itās done if youāre interested!!) and are all acrylic on paper and 15x22in. This project was heavily inspired by the style of Disco Elysiumās character portraits, as well as games like Avalon, The Resistance, and Coup. These have honestly been a joy to work on and being able to do something like this professionally is the dream,, so on the off chance any indie studios see this and are looking for artists, š contact meš
Individual paintings posted here and here (couldnt fit all the images in one post) and full artistās statement under the cut!! ⤵ļø
Ā Ā Ā Alter Ego is a social deduction game for 5-12 players where the forces of good and evil go head to head to either conceal or reveal their identities, and save the city or burn it down. It was inspired by the popular party game mafia, iterating on its premise and reimagining it in a superhero setting. Each player is dealt a role with specific rules which they then enact secretly every round in the ānight timeā portion of the gameāhowever, when day rolls around, everyone appears as a mild mannered civilian. Itās the civiliansā and heroesā jobs to root out who the villains are without revealing too much about their own alter egos (so they donāt become a target next round), and itās the villainsā job to kill as many good guys and wreak as much havoc as possible before the end of the game. The fate of the city rests in your hands. Will you let the villains win?
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Each of the character cards in Alter Egos was hand painted in order to capture the unique spirit each role embodies. I used expressive brushwork as well as strong lighting and intentional limited color pallets to emphasize each roleās personality and how the teams are connected. All three of the villains have very dramatic bright green lighting which starkly sets them apart from the rest of the roles. The Hero, Sidekick, and Traitor cards all heavily feature red and blue, and their backgrounds feed into each other, demonstrating their connection, but each role is differentiated in how these colors are treated. The Sidekick card features bright, optimistic, almost naive pinks and periwinkle blue shades, while the Hero card features a deeper blue and more standard cadmium red, attempting to convey the concept of an archetypal Hero. The Traitor card, on the other hand, is darker and moodier, keeping that bright cadmium red, but trading the blues for blacks and adding in some of the villainous green to symbolize how this role appears to be a part of the hero team, but is actually on the villain team. The final six cards all use the same limited palette of dioxazine violet, orange oxide, crimson oxide, azo green, and titanium white, with a few cards featuring red gold and ultramarine blue. While the Detective and the Granny are named cards, they are still classified as civilians, so they share this same color identity.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā In this series I wanted to explore how color and lighting affect the perceived personality of a portrait subject. I specifically chose the more muted tones and flatter lighting for the civilians to convey their mundanity, and the dramatic lighting and bright colors for the heroes and villains to convey the fantastical nature of those roles in a superhero setting, I wanted all of the paintings to feel connected enough to be part of the same world, while also being distinct enough to feel like individuals. As an illustrator I strive to straddle the line between making work that fills a brief in a purely utilitarian style, and work that preserves my own voice and artistic expression, and these portraits are my answer to that goal.
