I love how Lightning can see right through people.
Angel was never a good guy, he was evil.
Like Homelander, evil, masquerading as this angelic being.
Angel has never been his friend, but his enemy that he's kept very close at his side under the guise of friendship. Lightning kept Angel under control to stop his bad side from winning out.
As much as everybody loves how gorgeous Angel is, the guy only wanted to be Lightning's friend to get close to him. Then, once Lightning's guard was down, he attempted to kill his competition. The only thing Angel cares about is power. Lightning is more powerful than Angel. He was meant to be the true Paladin, and Angel couldn't handle it.
Lightning, meanwhile, couldn't give a rat's ass about power. He knows who and what he is, and doesn't need a title. He doesn't need to go out of his way for accolades. The dude is comfortable in his own skin. He doesn't even really want to deal with other people at all and would rather be an introverted scientist. But not only is Lightning powerful, but his familiar is the Demon King of Spirits. The demon king didn't want to possess a human form and come back to Assiah, but he obviously respects Lightning enough to lend him his power and collaborate. That's the biggest accomplishment.
Lightning, once he defeats Angel, keeps Angel's dark heart a secret, even from Osceola, who didn't see Angel's evil.
Lightning also figured out that Angel was like a kept puppy, being raised as a vessel for the King of Light, hence why the Grigori agency let him live in such luxury. It was like fattening up a lamb for slaughter. Lewin protected Angel, despite it all. Because protecting Angel, saves the world from his wrath.
Even though Angel comes back from the dead, he still isn't going to be able to kill Lightning. Lightning is smarter, stronger and level-headed.
