Genuinely one of my favorite things about Naoki Urasawa is just how many divorced men there are in all of his works. It's straight up impossibile not to notice once you pick up on it. It's hilarious. A character doesn't even have to be canonically/legally separeted to be functionally divorced. Most divorced cast of all time. Most divorced cast of all time always in every manga. It cracks me up so bad.
happy 7️⃣th!!! anniversary
Based on some NG+ post-battle dialogue lol

(W.I.P) Endgame (Raidou remastered)
Ao ashi is just such an amazing sports manga like i cannot get over how much it covers using football as a focus. Relationships, teamwork, having a goal, continuous striving and overcoming weaknesses, communication, racism, cultural differences, insecurities, the importance of health, of education, the necessity of struggling to be able to build foundation, god there is just so much talked about and to talk about in ao ashi i can’t even begin to list all of it. The character building is phenomenal, the pacing is literally perfect, the manga panelling is so good too like it emphasizes when it feels like an emphasis and shows js like idek how to talk abt manga panelling just know it felt right. I am continuously enamored by the progress, the development, the direction ao ashi takes in depicting not just the football knowledge but also how the players make the sport and vice versa.
On a more personal note now, Aoi Ashito - the main character - required and had some amazing character development. I cannot tell you how much his airheaded selfishness pissed me off in the beginning, which is peak character building btw like the mc beam usually gets me but not this time, the way he couldn’t work with his friends and how he even subconsciously refused to look at them for support bc he was raised in an environment where he only had himself to depend on. Watching him grow has been the most amazing thing and every time i remind myself to not be a judgy reader I’m overcome w the knowledge that yah the mangaka built him extremely well and all of his behaviors and actions make sense. It makes sense and thats why my annoyance was valid, desired even because it was frustrating to his teammates and that effect was created for the audience too.
Ashitos senpais are some of the coolest and best senpai ever, yes even Akutsu thats my boy right there, but especially Yoshitsune. Hes so funny so goofy such a solid plot device yet also cornerstone comedic effect like bro i love him so much he needed more screen time (i say as i read the manga) But also i catch myself js saying to my com screen “wahhh sooo coool [character name but usually yoshitsune lmao]” like that fangirls effect idk so oftennnn once again i have to highlight how ao ashi captures the strength of teamwork while not taking anything away from the personal strength.
Hana is definitely one of the best love interests i’ve ever seen in a shonen manga she is so amazing, so cool, so smart, so caring, so attentive, so goal oriented the way her brother is, so just incredibly supportive and such a core character in the way she kinda symbolizes how despite having no knowledge or even interest in football she still wholeheartedly supports ashito even tho theres a disconnect bc they arent quite seeing the same world football isnt everything even tho ashito might think it is she reminds him of the world that is outside of football for him to turn to.
Akutsu Nagisa is one of my fav antagonists in all of manga. Askeladd of Vinland Saga being another one. And they have almost similar roles too in propagating the growth of the main characters. Im also insanely proud of how much Akutsu grew over the course of ao ashi esp from that reveal of his backstory. Shameless kuriaku plug here but the wayyyyy Kuribayashi came to his moms funerallllll *wink wink* Akkun is seriously precious and hes so impressive my son has gotten so far i love him sm
Thank u for reading this far??? Uhm this became a lil more than an ao ashi feeling dump oopsies
