In 1976, while Electric Light Orchestra was in the process of writing A New World Record, Jeff Lynne sent a rough draft of a track he wasn’t sure would make it onto the album to Paul McCartney. McCartney reached out, apparently deeply enamored by the song, and asked to be involved in the recording — cementing its place on the album.

Paul flew out to Munich, and Lynne and McCartney recorded the very first take of Telephone Line. Unfortunately, according to inside sources, McCartney broke down halfway through the recording, and was unable to complete the collaboration. Lynne assured him that he would record the song and make sure it ended up on the album.

The official recording has not been released to the public.
