During class one of the boys silently slid their calculator over to me and this is what I saw.
How can this be done
TEXAS TANKER SURFING
Located along the Gulf of Mexico, the Port of Houston ranks amongst the busiest ports in the world for volume of cargo moved by ships. The city of Houston itself is not revered for producing many “waves” that a surfer would come looking for, but within the bay there is a combination which fills our fix. As these ships transit up Galveston Bay displacing tens of thousands of tons of water, they propel a wave from this force which rises up from a ripple to form a surf-able wave in the right locations. Many variables abound, it may be as small as a knee-high wedge to a shoulder-high wall of water which makes for quite the swell for us Texas guys and gals. Humorous as it may be by some, a wave by definition is simply “an area of moving water that is raised above the main surface of an ocean, a lake, etc.” That is precisely what we have across Galveston Bay, a surf-able wave produced by the ships which transit our port. This was my first chance to catch these waves alongside my dad and 3 other Captains. It was quite the experience to not only surf amongst them, but alongside on the same wave from the vessel’s which we also make our living on.
LOADING FOR DURBAN
Two 96mt locomotives awaited loading aboard the Ocean Charger in Norfolk, VA for their shipping to Durban, South Africa. Completed by twin lifting, the pieces came on swiftly followed by an extensive lashing plan for securing them during transit. With a full day under the crew’s belt, we had a night to rest before commencing the lengthy voyage which shall take this ship nearly 20,000nm before returning to the U.S. again.

PORT CALL SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO Ships make money at sea, not sitting along a dock. This has pushed the bohemian days of sailing by the wayside for highly efficient operations. Containers allow ships to call port for a few hours versus days, leaving little time for shore exploration. The faces on the dock have not changed though, always a sight for sailors to share stories and refresh from the confines of a ship. These are some of those faces and the stories they hold within while in San Juan, Puerto Rico
I'm proud to say I had the privilege of sailing on this ship, the National Glory, for three short months this past summer. Though only a lowly Deck Cadet, the people I met, the places I traveled to, and the experience as a whole helped to shape me into the sailor I'm continuing to become. I wouldn't trade those days on the Natty G for anything. Love you guys.
