Our presentation
Final elements
We are UP printing today.
Some small elements to tighten our pulleys that are on the motors but more importantly the part of our extruder that will hold our candles. This is the best option for creating this piece because of how accurate we can be with the UP printers. The clear acrylic matches with the corner props and look good when it is all up and running!
Workshop
Another full day in the workshop today.
Daisy and Meg constructed our poles while Anna worked out the breadboard. There should hopefully be a post about that shortly.
Poles and pulleys assembled we set them into our concrete moulds for each corner and left them overnight to harden - lets hope they turn out ok!
Our extruder element is still a little up in the air, we have had some electrical issues so our plans have changed a bit. We are going to make this part slightly more manual, still using wax but in the form of a candle and using its natural drip to regulate when our extrusions happen. Â

OH NO!!
Just had really bad news broken to us...
There is absolutely no way to connect our four stepper motors to the Aduino Uno without a QuatroStepper Driver Shield according to Peter. The worst thing that could happen right now. With no chance order one in this close to the weekend and Jaycar not having any and our finances not being able to support the purchase we seem too have reached an impasse
Breadboard layout
Totally confused on what is happening with the connection of our motors to this breadboard layout.Â
Time to seek expert advice. No replies to my Emails from Emily so hopefully Peter will know what to do as my technical skills seem to have reached their limits.
First part working
Just got the first part working that separates out the power supply for the four motors and now moving onto the connection of the motors to the breadboard. So far all on trackÂ
Structure
We had another shopping day today.Â
We found some pulleys that are going to work perfectly inside our poles and we found our poles to match.
We went to a marine supply shop and got some cord that can hold a lot of weight to use to attach to our extruder.
We got candles for the filament and another bag of mortar for our blocks.
Hopefully we have everything we need now.
Assembly of technical components
I was really struggling over the last few days as to how to put all four stepper motors together and was scrolling through endless tutorials online as I didn't want to approach Emily with absolutely not having a clue at all. Just found this and am hoping that we can adapt it to fit our needs and motors. As it has our arduino, four motors and an extra power supply.
Am afraid that this won't work for our group because during talk with other groups using similar circuits are using driver shields. But hopefully this instructable means we can not use one as they would exceed our budget and ordering them in now would be impossible.Â

Confirmation that we are saved!
Just had a chat with Emily who read through the instructable I just posted and our motors and said that we should be able to adapt it to work with our motors!Â
Time for another jaycar with another shopping list:Â
Time Management and balancing Ross's hand-in.
Have not met for a few days and have decided that until Wednesday the 18th - Ross's hand-in (INDN 311) we will focus on his project.
This is a very stressful time and it has been hard balancing these two large and important projects. Will be straight back on track as soon as all of this double project madness is over.

Base Blocks
Daisy has completed all the concrete blocks we need for our base (with a couple of extra ones just in case we damage one in the process). They are looking good - will not be the same colour however at the end of the project as they have not all had the same amount of time to dry. We realised this going into the project and are ok/happy with how it will look aesthetically.
We started out planning on making our whole structure 1m long by 30cm wide. Though after laying out 10 of the 10cm blocks side by side we (as a group) have decided this scale is not actually that nice and have decided to reduce it in size. We'll cut it down to 6x3 blocks - so about 60cm by 30cm give or take a little because we have to take into consideration the size of the gap between blocks.
The first few blocks have dried out nicely now and they are a great light grey colour so it'll be nice once they're all dried out. Dasie and Meg will mould the corner blocks once we have assembled the poles to set into them - this shall be done at a later date as it is not necessary to have it done right away.
Instrutables to the rescue - more LDR work
This layout seems a whole lot easier than my previous attempt. Now all that is left is to work out how to work this for four ldr's that work together.Â
More LDR Lessons
Decided to give this tutorial a try and make our input element work. Turn out to be really helpful but worried that the arduino uno isn't going to have enough space to fit four LDRs and run four stepper motors.
Hopefully I can find a different way to connect our input that's simpler, as we don't need all the data that the LDR's will provide.

Jaycar goodies
We have finished collecting all the bits and bobs we need in the way of electronics (we hope)
After a big Jaycar haul we now have all the wires and things we need. Time to start assembling. We are hoping to have lots of time for testing so that we can be sure it will work!
Light dependent Resistors
Researching more into LDR's and if they are what we need since the scope of project has changed from our original idea. They seemed like the most appropriate thing for the intended sun tracking now with a more interactive tracker that actually monitors the movement of hand-held light sources in a blacked out room, the requirements might be different.
Looks like LDR's are still the best way for us to go as they can measure the intensity of light and add another dimension to the interaction. So that they record not just where someone is with the light but how far away they are too.
