love it when characters do a sacrifice play ostensibly to save others but mostly so they don't have to face themselves

the fact that denny o’ neil had so much control over bat books for a long time as an editor i think really speaks to why bruce was slowly molded into someone isolated and near permanently obsessive-compulsive to his own detriment and to the detriment of his relationships with his kids, and how that’s shaped so much of who he is in even modern interpretations. denny was the one who never wanted bruce in a committed romance and according to mike w. barr was very angry at bruce being given a child and may even have indirectly been involved in why damian was subsequently kept out of continuity for several years thereafter (barr says he and some of his immediate higher ups were threatened with being fired if they ever wrote about the child again). he was also the one responsible for coming up with the idea to have fans phone in to kill robin, which starlin was more than happy to agree to because he had been gunning for robin to be killed off anyway. there’s a comics historian who commented that “o'neil's interpretation of batman as a vengeful obsessive-compulsive, which he modestly describes as a return to the roots, was actually an act of creative imagination that has influenced every subsequent version of the dark knight”. i do think a lot of the more immediate skew towards making bruce into a gaslighting and perpetually angry figure came from starlin when he started plotting jason’s demise or from miller when he introduced his “good soldier” rhetoric, but i think when looking at the bigger picture the fault definitely lies in denny’s hands as a whole. he and the writers he directly fostered were uninterested in the idea of bruce being someone who could work with and commit to people and they thrilled in making him into a lonely and perpetually closed off figure likely bc it fulfilled their dark power fantasy
