practice papers ꨄ︎ part 3
tutor!hollis x student!reader
a/n: so the ‘y/n’ in the story is a teenager obviously, and i don’t wanna put an exact age in because idk how old my readers are or what range they’re in. also when i write i imagine myself as the character, so if you’re not ‘lean’ or ‘5 years younger’ just insert whatever you are 😅 anyway im gonna probably be inactive for a good while. i hope you enjoy this one <2
you walk out of school and start looking around for hollis’ black mercedes. he’s parked on the side of the road, not too far from school but far enough so no one will see you. you smile and speed walk over to him, getting into the passengers seat. hollis glances around, making sure no one saw you. ‘don’t worry hollis, no one’s here.’
‘just making sure. how was school?’ hollis starts driving, slower than this morning.
‘it was boring, like always.’ you reply, texting your mom letting her know you’re going to your ‘best friends’ house.
‘whose that?’ hollis looks over but he adjusts his eyes back onto the road quickly.
‘just my mom, i’m letting her know i won’t be home until later.’
‘what are you telling her?’
‘that i’m going to my best friends house.’
‘that’s a good girl.’ hollis takes a hand off the wheel and strokes your head like you’re a dog. you lean into his hand but he leaves you touch deprived as he takes his hand off you.
‘school can’t have been that boring, cmon. tell me something.’
‘i’m serious! nothing interesting happened.’
‘well..’ hollis pauses for a moment, finding something to say. ‘what lessons did you have then?’
‘maths, english, pe, biology.’
‘oh yeah? what did you learn in biology?’
‘we were learning about the eyes, did you know the pupil in your eye is actually a hole?’
‘woah, i didn’t know that actually, you could be my tutor huh?’ hollis teases, he did know that, but you seemed too enthusiastic for him to just say ‘yeah i knew that.’
‘i thought it was really cool, but it’s kinda weird too.’
‘super weird.’ hollis drags his words out. ‘so what do you wanna learn today, hm?’
‘uhh, could we just do a past paper? you said they help you and i have an exam coming up anyway so maybe that could help me.’
‘sure thing, are you hungry?’
‘you tryna go out somewhere to eat?’
‘with my tutor..?’ you hesitate.
‘y/n, i said think of me as a friend. do you wanna go eat somewhere?’
you turn to look at him, his gaze is fixed on the road. you don’t answer yet but you take a good look at him. his hand rests loosely on the wheel. he has messy bleached hair which falls down & covers his eyes often, but he never fixes it, just lets it sit, covering his view. his jaw is sharp, his cheekbones are defined. at one point, he glances over. eyes meeting yours. you didn’t realise how long you were staring for. then he looks back at the road like nothing happened. ‘so..?’ fuck he’s hot. really fucking hot. and he’s smart. your mom always told you to go for older boys since they have the knowledge, but he’s your tutor. your mom pays him to teach you, this can’t mean anything. he’s bring you over to his place to learn, that’s all. right?
you snap out of your daze, finally. you choose to take the opportunity since he’s really handsome, plus you’ve never been on a proper date before, none of the boys at school really batter an eye at you. ‘sure. where to?’
‘mmm, there’s this really good place like 15 minutes away from here, it’s called folium.’
your eyes widen. ‘folium? like the michelin star restaurant?’
‘..yeah?’ hollis replies confusedly.
‘like the super fucking expensive one?’
‘yeah, what would you rather mcdonald’s? that’s fine.’
‘what, no no. i just don’t have any money.’
‘are you fucking insane?’ hollis looks over at you. ‘i’m paying, how’s a teenager in high school gonna pay for a dinner where the cheapest item is 90 dollars?’ hollis laughs. it’s sort of unsettling, he sounded angry but in a sarcastic way.
you just melt into the seat.
‘oh baby, i didn’t mean to raise my voice, c’mere.’ he stretches his arm out and rubs your shoulder. ‘i’ll stop getting so loud, i didn’t know you were so sensitive.’
‘i’m not sensitive.’ you reply sternly.
‘i’m not, i just don’t like when people shout.’
‘mami you know i was joking, but i wont do it again.’ you flinch.
‘yeah? you don’t like that?’
‘no i do, but it’s just that my best friend always calls me that, no one else ever calls me that. also im like 5 years younger than you.’
‘so? i’m not calling you mommy, i’m calling you mami.’
‘is that not the same thing?’
‘i’ll keep that in mind.’
‘what kinda food you like? most you kids these days are picky as fuck.’
a wave of jealousy comes over you. most you kids? he takes other students out to eat? you think of something strategic to say.
‘what do you mean most kids?’
‘like my brother is around your age, he’s picky as fuck, all he eats is pizza and instant noodles.’
you giggle. it didn’t really answer your question but you’ll find out at some point. ‘i’m not picky, at least i don’t think so.’
‘you’re pretty lean, seems like you eat vegetables. pretty rare for anyone to eat anything unprocessed.’
‘yeah i love vegetables, i have a salad at least once a week.’
‘yeah? you gonna order one today?’
‘well i need to see what they have first, i don’t wanna rip a hole in your pocket.’
‘y/n, don’t stress. you could order the whole menu & it wouldn’t make my pocket an ounce lighter.’
you smile to yourself. ‘there’s no way you make enough money as a tutor to eat regularly at an expensive ass restaurant.’
‘who said i’m just a tutor?’
‘nice assumption, but you’re wrong, doll.’
a couple more minutes pass, you’re in silence. you’re usually awkward but hollis is somehow comforting. you always know what to say, he always knows what to reply with. you start having thoughts about hollis, like you want to have a relationship with him, something real. he already calls you names that make butterflies flutter in your stomach & fireworks explode in your heart, but you overthink. what if he’s just being friendly? he’s invited you out, to a super expensive restaurant. you hate how you spiral. hopefully after today, a nice meal, hopefully a good study session, you’ll be able to talk to him. you’ve never told anyone about your overthinking, not even your best friend. you thought it was normal to overthink a bunch, but you realised how laid back your best friend was. her mentality is always ‘so what?’ thats it. she doesn’t think anymore than that. you always try to be like that, but you just can’t.
‘we’re here. seems busy, when’s your curfew?’
‘whenever, it’s only 5pm anyway, we have time.’
‘great, didn’t know if your mom was strict or anything.’
‘she isn’t when it comes to my best friend, i told her i’m at her place.’
‘gotcha. anyway let’s go in.’
hollis pulls the handbrake and steps out of the car, he jogs to your side & opens your door, passing you his hand and helping you step out. ‘thank you hollis.’
‘anything for a pretty girl like you.’
you both start walking to the entrance, pretty string lights are hung up above the windows & gutters, it’s slightly dark so it looks much nicer. hollis holds the door open for an elderly couple coming out of the restaurant, not only is he a sweetheart for you, but for everyone. ‘wasn’t he just an angel!’ the lady whispers to her husband. you walk into the restaurant and soothing jazz music was playing. a receptionist was standing behind a desk, smile growing as he notices hollis.
‘mr herndon! it’s been a while since i’ve last seen you, how have you been holding up?’
‘i’ve been okay travis, just haven’t had time to come for a meal, yknow?’
‘i know how busy you get, i see you’ve got an acquaintance with you today. is this your significant other?’
‘haha, no travis. she’s just a friend of mine. can we get my usual spot?’
‘of course. you know where to go.’
‘thank you.’ you both reply.
you clear your throat. ‘do you always come here alone?’
‘yeah. i used to come here with my dad but he’s back in la, he’s been busy as fuck. other than that, i’ve never brought anyone here before.’
‘i’m honoured i’m the first.’ you grin.
hollis looks down at you. ‘i didn’t realise you’re still in your school uniform, how did travis think you were my girlfriend?’ he leans down and takes your tie off, undoing the top 2 buttons and ruffling your shirt, making it look a tiny bit more casual & not like a typical school girl. ‘that’s better. pull your skirt down a bit.’
‘what’s wrong with my skirt?’
your skirt is kinda short, all it takes is one blow of wind & everything is on show. you unroll it a few times, until it hits just above your knees. ‘i look ridiculous.’
‘you look less like a slut now.’
hollis pulls the chair out for you and tucks it in for you. you’re a bit stunned by his words, but he has a point. everyone probably thinks that, but hollis has the heart to tell you to your face.
‘here.’ hollis passes you a menu. gold lines engrave the edges, the paper alone feels like it’s costs 50 dollars. your mouth parts, just taking in how fancy the whole place is. the table is placed upstairs, right by a window overlooking the city & a busy road. warm amber lights flood the dark atmosphere, it’s so beautiful. a pretty chandelier is placed in the middle of the dining room, candles lit on top of it. ‘how do they light the candles all the way up there?’ you point up.
‘you know travis? he’s actually super tall, like 9ft tall. every time no one’s up here, he runs up and lights them quickly with matches, then he runs back to the reception.’ hollis jokes.
‘when we leave i’ll ask him to stand up and you’ll see.’
‘okay! i know you’re lying anyway..’
hollis laughs. ‘anyway, what are you getting?’
‘i haven’t really looked properly, can you recommend me something?’
‘are you allergic to anything?’
‘the shrimp alfredo is my favourite. i’m not in the mood for it tonight though, i’d give that a try if i were you.’
you glance over at the shrimp alfredo on your menu. 92 fucking dollars. for spaghetti with white sauce & shrimp. your eyes sharpened. the description made it sound lovely.
tender shrimp sautéed in garlic and butter, tossed with perfectly cooked pasta and coated in a rich, velvety alfredo sauce made with cream and parmesan. finished with a touch of black pepper and fresh herbs for a smooth, indulgent bite in every forkful.
‘yeah. it sounds nice. what are you getting?’
‘mm, i really want the lamb shoulder tonight. it’ll fuel me up for our physics later.’
‘haha, yeah. sounds good.’
‘well, not necessarily. last time i did with my best friend it didn’t end well.’
‘that’s okay, i was only wondering pretty. what do you want to drink?’
‘the berry infusion caught my eye, that please.’
hollis looks around, trying to catch a waiter but it’s far too busy. he snaps his fingers & all 3 waiters turn their heads. one scurries over with their head held down, as if they’re embarrassed.
‘i’m so sorry for the wait mr herndon. quite a busy day today.’
‘don’t worry about it, rodriguez. could we put our order in?’
‘of course.’ rodriguez pulls his note book out from his back pocket and takes the pen that was placed behind his ear. ‘can i get your drinks first?’
‘yeah, i’ll have the limoncello please, and you?’ hollis looks up from the menu, his eyes meeting yours, you were already looking at him, not sure if he will order for you or not. you straighten up in your seat and turn to the waiter. ‘please may i have the berry infusion?’
‘of course. cranberry or raspberry as the base?’
‘brilliant choice. i’ll get those out hurriedly. would you like to order your food now or when i bring the drinks out?’
‘we may aswell save you the trip, we’ll order now. i’ll have the roasted lamb shoulder.’
rodriguez scribbles hollis’ words down hurrdiley. ‘brilliant. and for the young lady?’
‘please may i have the shrimp alfredo pasta please.’ you grin.
‘of course. i’ll see if the chefs can prioritise your meals.’ he winks at hollis and hollis nods. ‘that would be great. thanks so much.’
the waiter nods back at hollis and speed walks downstairs, probably to the bar & then the kitchen.
‘your manners are insane, a real gentleman must have taught you.’
‘haha. yeah, my dad would never let me get away with forgetting to say please or thank you.’
‘ouch. he’s stern then huh?’
‘not really, he just want me to be polite.’
‘gotcha. i’m so sorry but i gotta run to the bathroom, you stay put, alright?’
‘will do. where else would i go?’
‘god knows what that tiny teenage brain of yours is thinking about. i’ll be back.’ hollis rubs your shoulder before walking downstairs. you stare at him for a moment, observing the little things like how straight his posture is, how he fumbles with the side of his belt just to keep his hands occupied. he then falls out of your view when he heads down the stairs. you turn to look out of the window, you’ll never get over the view, it’s so beautiful. the place is around 30 minutes from school, so it’s more like a 45 minute drive from your house. good thing your mom doesn’t have your location. you just continue staring out into the distance, watching each car pass by, wondering where everyone going, and what everyone’s thinking about. you put thoughts to cars, one’s driving home from getting fired, another is bringing a new kitten home, another is driving with a birthday cake in the passengers seat driving to surprise their dad, you get lost in your thoughts. but finally, in a good way. you come to the realisation that thinking about things like this, quietens your head. it’s soothing. your head hasn’t felt quiet in what feels like forever. as soon as you realise your head finally got quiet, your phone vibrates on the table. it’s your mom.
mama: hi baby, just checking in. do you know around what time you’ll be coming home?
you: no idea mommy, i’m sorry. i’ll tell you when i know.
mama: you can sleepover if you want, just let me know before 10 so i know if i should stay awake & wait for you or not.
you: i will mama, i’ll text you later.
you lay your phone face down on the table. the guilt hurts you, you don’t often lie to your mom. but this is something you don’t have a choice over. going to dinner with someone who is practically your teacher shouldn’t be happening. you see the waiter coming up the stairs with 2 drinks in his hand, a purple one and a pale yellow one.
‘a cranberry infusion for the lady, and the limoncello for the man. has he ran over to the bathroom?’
‘yeah, he’s been a while.’ you giggle nervously.
‘casual hollis, he’s probably chatting away with travis. i’ll remind him he has a pretty young lady sat at his table waiting for him.’
‘thank you, you’re the best.’
‘what can i say.’ he chuckles and quickly walks back down the stairs, hopefully to pick up hollis.
you sit up straight in your chair, as everyone around you has perfect posture, making you feel a tiny bit self conscious. hollis doesn’t match all the other people in here. they’re all wearing suits and pretty dresses. hollis is in a black wife beater and boot cut baggy ripped jeans, and you’re in your school uniform which has been adjusted to make you seem a tiny bit more like you put your outfit together as if you were planning on coming here.
hollis finally comes back from the bathroom & he jogs to your table, already apologising 5 ft away from you.
‘i’m so so sorry. i’m sorry. i’m so sorry.’
he slumps down in his chair and stirs his drink with the straw. ‘i’m so fucking sorry, i’m here now. are you alright?’
‘yeah i’m okay. you were gone for ages.’
‘yeah, fuck i know. i’m sorry. i got caught up with travis. i promise i didn’t forget about you, it’s just been ages since i’ve seen him.’ hollis pleads. you reach your hand out and place it down gently onto hollis’ forearm. ‘it’s okay, stop panicking, you’re fine.’
‘thank you. how about we talk about something in the meantime.’
‘i’d like that. my mom texted, she’s wondering when i’ll be home, she needs to know soon.’
‘fuck, i don’t know. why she gotta know now if you don’t mind me asking?’
‘because she stays awake for me, she gets paranoid when i’m not at home.’
‘oh yeah, god i don’t know when our food will be here, what time is it now?’
‘my mom keeps mentioning me sleeping over, since yknow, she thinks i’m at my best friends house. it’s like she doesn’t want me back home’ you laugh.
hollis’ eyes widen. ‘i wouldn’t mind you spending the night at my place. if you want to obviously.’
‘i’d love that, i just didn’t want to straight up ask.’
‘it would be great. imagine all the studying we could do.’ hollis teases sarcastically. every time he mentions studying, it’s like he really means something else underneath it, you just can’t pin point what. ‘i’ll let my mom know now then, i don’t want to keep her waiting.’
you: hi mama, i know you said it’s alright if i stay over at her place but i just wanted to tell you so i don’t keep you up
mama: sounds good baby, her mom will take you to school right?
mama: okay. i’m going to sleep soon, text me when you go to bed too, please don’t stay up ridiculously late.
you: okay, goodnight to you mama
‘she’s fine with me staying over. well, you know what i mean.’
‘great. i’m pretty sure our food will be out soon, so we can head home shortly.’
‘why do you want to leave so fast?’
‘yeah, you’ve looked tired this whole time but right now it seems like you’re struggling to even keep your eyes open.’
‘i promise i’m not meaning to look like that, but i am a bit tired.’
‘no worries, we can get out of here soon.’
‘no no, that’s not necessary, i’m always tired. nothing new.’
‘i insist. we can take the food out to go & eat it at home.’
‘no, please hollis. i’m serious i’m fine. i love the view here. we have all night to study since you’re so eager. i’m not going anywhere.’
hollis blushes & goes a bit shy, you notice him slump down into his seat slightly. ‘you’re right, we do have all night. & the view isn’t going anywhere, it’s quite similar from my place.’
‘yeah. i live up in the hills, near a main road too.’
‘i’m excited to see this.’
hollis grins. before you know it, rodriguez is coming over to your table with your meals. it smells divine.
‘the pasta for the mrs, and the lamb for the sir.’
‘thanks a bunch, rodriguez. do you mind bringing us 2 to go boxes?’
‘already?’ rodriguez looks offended.
‘yeah, we don’t wanna make it a huge hassle for you to keep going back and forth, it’s already super busy as it is.’
‘yeah, more & more people keep coming in, it’s the busiest we’ve been all month. i’ll get those boxes sorted for you. im assuming you’d want the cheque now aswell?’
‘you know it.’ hollis winks.
‘coming right your way.’ rodriguez spins on his heels and heads straight downstairs, completely ignoring the table next to that wanted a refill on their drinks. ‘how rude..’’ the lady mutters.
‘doesn’t it just?’ hollis wastes no time and he digs right into his food. you twirl some spaghetti onto your fork and stab a shrimp, bringing the food to your mouth. it sure does taste like it’s 92 dollars, at least it’s worth it. you slurp a few more noodles & notice rodriguez coming back, 2 plastic tubs in his hands with a receipt on top of them. ‘how’s your food, m’lady?’
‘it’s delicious. i definitely will be returning that’s for sure.’
‘hopefully with me.’ hollis lets out a subtle laugh, rodriguez found it funny too.
‘that’s a pleasure to hear, you’re always welcome, even without hollis.’ he nods his head with respect and turns to hollis. ‘just leave the cash on the table, i’ll get travis to get it when you’re out.’
‘will do. have a good night.’
you finish off eating, scraping whatever’s left on your plate into the plastic box and close the lid, hollis does the same. he only has a few potatoes & salad leaves left as he ate the whole lamb shoulder like it was nothing. he had a bit of grease from the meat on his chin. you reached over and wiped it off his face, then bringing it to your mouth, sucking the juices off your finger.
‘oh you’re fucking dirty.’ hollis whispers. he bites his lip, but he keeps his demeanour. ‘we’re going home now, cmon.’ he pulls your chair out and you get up. hollis is clearly sexually frustrated. just that one little move had him adjusting himself, making sure his print wasn’t on show.
he fumbles in his pockets and takes out a stack of cash, secured tightly with a rubber band. he takes the band off and ruffles the money, counting in his head. he gets a rough amount and slaps it onto the small black tray which was awaiting his payment. he throws an extra 50 down as a tip, then he gets closer to you and wraps his arm around you. he’s really warm, it’s comforting. ‘ready to go?’
‘yeah.’ your voice cracks. you clear your throat and hollis looks concerned. ‘is everything okay?’
‘yeah, everything’s fine. i’m just a bit cold that’s all.’
‘cold? my jackets in the car.’
you and hollis walk downstairs, making it back into the front of the restaurant, where travis is still stood. in the exact same spot.
‘you two take care. i hope to see you soon hollis. hopefully the pretty girl tags along too.’ travis winks at you.
‘for sure, we’ll definitely be making a return. good night trav.’
his arm is still hanging loosely around you, the height difference is surreal. you’re not even to his shoulders, you barley pass his elbow. he opens the car door for you and step in. he gets his jacket from the back seat and he tosses it to you as he sits down. ‘this should warm you up.’ it was a white zip up hoodie, the zip riding all the way up to the hood. you zip it up about half way. ‘thank you.’ it’s around 8pm at this point and you’re already about to fall asleep. you recline your seat a bit, still enough to be classes as sitting up but more relaxed now. ‘you want me to turn the heated seats on?’
‘on it.’ hollis starts turning a few dials and you instantly feel the seat getting warmer underneath you. it’s so relaxing, there’s no way you’re not gonna pass out asleep. ‘how far is your house from here?’ you yawn.
‘around half an hour baby, can you hold on that long?’
‘i’ll try my hardest. talk to me as i don’t fall asleep.’ your eyes flutter shut.
hollis glances over at you. ‘you’re already asleep that’s not fair.’ he teases.
‘no.. i’m not..’ you mumble.
‘i’m so sure.’ hollis stays quiet for the rest of the ride, his eyes flick to you at every chance he gets. every red light, every stop sign, every time someone had to cross the road. the way his huge hoodie hugged you like a blanket, your tiny skirt riding up your thighs, your messed up hair and your knee high socks rolling down. hollis thinks you’re the prettiest girl he’s ever laid his eyes on. but he can’t have you, you’re forbidden. you’re in high school, and he’s practically a teacher. but if it’s wrong, why does it feel so right?
