chicago was cold during the winter. even though you decided to wear multiple layers, you could still feel the frigid air numbing your skin. snow fell lightly, making the sky shimmer. despite the icy weather, the city was undeniably beautiful. the skyscrapers that sculpted the skyline stood tall and high, the chicago river gently flowing beneath them.
you had never been to chicago before. hollis had brought you here, to the place he grew up before he moved to la.
“you’ve really never been here?,” he asked, the winter chill causing fog to spiral out of his mouth as he spoke.
“nope,” you shook your head. you took a deep breath, the cold air stinging your nose.
“i think you’ll like it.”
“i do,” you nodded. “but it’s cold.”
“you’ll get used to it,” he teased, smiling down at you.
you glared up at him, but your eyes held nothing but warmth. his pale cheeks and nose were turning a rosy shade of red, and the snowflakes fell onto his hair, glistening against the light blonde strands.
you rubbed your hands together as you walked side by side, searching for any source of warmth.
“you’re that cold?,” he grinned, shoving his hands into the pockets of his black jacket.
“i left my gloves in the car,” you groaned.
you were quick to flip him off, despite your fingers being completely numb. he laughed for a moment before taking your hand and placing it in his pocket, intertwining the your fingers with his within the fabric.
you nodded in response, letting the warmth of his hand comfort you. he began to talk about something that happened to him in this city when he was younger, his smile wide as he spoke. but all you could focus on was his face. of course, you were still listening, but every time you looked at him it was like you fell in love all over again. the way his eyes softened any time he talked about something he was passionate about. how his smile lines creased whenever he smiled. everything about him was perfect to you, like he had been carved just for you.
you two walked for a while before coming across a small cafe. the heater was definitely on, because as soon as you walked in, you left out a sigh of relief. the warm coziness of the cafe was much needed. the small wooden table you sat at was lit with a candle.
“so we saw the city today,” he began. “where else do you wanna go?”
you sipped your coffee, thinking about the things you wanted to do. “i’ve heard about the art institute, that seems cool.”
you wrapped your hands around the warm cup of coffee, gazing out the window. you turned to face him, just to see that he was already looking at you, a small smile on his face.
“nothing,” he replied. “god forbid a man wants to admire his girl.”
you rolled your eyes, but you couldn’t help but smile. he knew you so well, he knew exactly what to do to make you feel like this. he always called you beautiful, but it felt like the first time every time he did.
it was around 11:30 at night now. you were walking back to the hotel the two of you were staying at. there was still a good amount of people awake at this hour, so the city wasn’t completely quiet yet. you two spoke no words to each other, but the silence felt natural. the only sounds to be heard were the soft chatter of the city, the snow crunching underneath your feet, and the wind whistling softly in your ear. you glanced down for a second, noticing how your hand fit perfectly in his.
"it feels nice having you here," hollis said, breaking the silence.
you looked at him, eyes soft.
"it's like... this is my home, and you being here feels special."
"special?," you repeated, wanting him to continue.
"yeah," he smiled. "you know what i mean. you always do."
your warm smile mirrored his. "i do."
"no," you shook your head. "guess i got used to it."
"told you." he leaned down to press a kiss on your temple. it was quick, nothing special. but to you, it was. it was the kind of kiss that kept you warm in the snow. it was like you felt it radiating straight to your heart.
the hotel room was dim and warm. the two of you wasted no time getting under the covers of the shared bed, sheltering you from the frigid city. you leaned back against the headboard, letting yourself relax. hollis laid his head down on your lap, his blonde locks splayed out on the bed. you ran your fingers through them, feeling him shiver under your touch.
"hm?," he hummed, his eyes meeting yours.
"do you like chicago or la more?," you asked, curious as to what he would say.
he thought for a moment before answering. his voice was soft as he spoke, his eyes holding a gentle expression.
"as long as you're here, i'm fine."
you squeezed your eyes shut and laughed at his answer.
"god holli, that's so corny," you said in between laughs.
"i know," he smiled. "but you love me, yeah?"
you tilted your head slightly, pushing strands of hair out of his face.
"what do you think?," you asked.
"i don't know, you tell me," he grinned.
you sighed dramatically before answering him.
"yes, holli, i love you."
you leaned down to kiss his lips, slightly chapped from the cold air. but you didn't care. all you cared about was the fact that you had him here with you.
