Text reads: I’ve made long term friends, people I see outside of 221b con (people I’ve even bought 30 dollar plane tickets for JUST so I could get through security to spend time with them in the airport during long layovers!!!) But I want to take a moment to shout out to the new ones, the ones who I’ve met in passing before, but not spent much time with, or who are coming for the first time this year and I’ve been chattering to NONSTOP during prep-work. First time ever going to 221B Con this year and I'm so excited yet nervous! Any survival tips for newbees? <33
Oh man, CONGRATULATIONS! Welcome to the family.Well, to get started make sure you're following the @221bcon and @homelessnetwork-221bcon Tumbrs for updates. Homeless network is great for finding roommates, learning about attendee-driven events (Like Nerd Soup, the hot tub party that happens Sunday night), and more!I recommend coming in Thursday and leaving Monday if you can make it happen. There's a Travel Grid sign up so you can coordinate travel to the hotel with others(like taking the MARTA from the airport): https://goo.gl/forms/aX44Z4R1vGJ9crzU2There's also a neat packing list you can download and edit here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sWeOMrAbzGYtb3dg-lbeqGiDhI781R8gJelKbhk83Dc/edit?usp=drive_web It's a blast to hang out and such. The amazing thing about this con is you can go not knowing a soul and will meet so many people! Everyone is super welcoming and lovely. If you do want to get to know people, keep an eye on the #221b con tag because attendee introductions start up in the next few weeks so you can see who will be there and what they're about. Start following other attendees as well.While you're at the con:1. Stay hydrated, even if you don't drink, but especially if you do. It's easy to forget.2. Eat at least 2-3 real meals a day, whether you get them from the hotel, order in, go out or hit up the grocery store ahead of time. EVERYONE FORGETS TO EAT BECAUSE OMG!EXCITED! 3. Set alarms for any meds you need to take. Again, forgetting=happens.4. Take some downtime for you, the great thing is if you need to go to your room and chill people understand, I took a three hour nap on Friday afternoon and it was GLORIOUS. Recharge my friendo. Also plug your phone in when you do that because:5. TAKE ALL THE PICTURES! Take them of you, of the new people you meet, of costumes, of neat things. Just remember to ask first. You'll want them to look back fondly on. Make sure to put them on tumblr when you get home.6. Sleep. Get a full night's rest.7. Don't be afraid to talk to people, seriously. Cannot recommend enough. If you're an anxious weirdo who's been told you talk to much or say weird shit, GUESS WHAT FRIENDO, YOU IN THE RIGHT PLACE! Which brings me to...8.Take this weekend to BE FEARLESS ! Attend the panels, ask questions, sing karaoke, wear that costume, take pictures with the guests, talk to strangers! Do all the amazing wonderful things you always want to do but are afraid of! This is the place!9. Go visit the dealers room, buy cool things! These people are part of our Fandom and make so much amazing stuff! I bought a Hannibal necklace, a neat set of Fandom coasters, and some fan art last year. WORTH IT. 10. Tip the bartender. Tip them well. But also tip the bellhop and house keeping (housekeeping daily). Look up what's customary online if you're unsure.I think that's a good start to a list. Feel free to ask questions if you have them of course! I did all of this from my phone so I'll have to double back and properly link things later.Cheers! And welcome to the family. 😀-Buzzy Crew
