My personal favourite version of the Steel Driving Man ballad, or John Henry, about the American folk hero of the same name. "According to legend, John Henry's prowess as a steel-driver was measured in a race against a steam powered hammer, which he won, only to die in victory with his hammer in his hand as his heart gave out from stress.” (Wikipedia) The song has been performed in countless different versions by as many different folk musicians, notably by Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie, among others. Here it is performed by Earl McCoy, Alfred Meng, and Clem Garner, and taken off the three-album compilation Work Hard, Play Hard, Pray Hard: Hard Time, Good Time & End Time Music 1923-1936. The title should be pretty self-explanatory.

Thelonious Monk’s ‘Bemsha Swing’ from the classic record Brilliant Corners, here with Sonny Rollins on tenor sax, Clark Terry on trumpet, Paul Chambers on double bass, Max Roach on the kettledrum and somebody else on the drums. It’s all good.

Great ambience and supreme rythmic texture! Inner Circle is from the mini EP “Age of Wander”. The rest of the EP is highly recommendable as well as all other works by M.A BEAT. Then all you’ve got to do is figure out if you want to dance or lay down. 

From their 2005 album “God’s Money”. The title refers to a friend of the band, who never had any money and never used them for anything - in stead when he occasionally had money he just gave it away saying “It’s God’s money”

Joshua Abrams is a bass-player, bandleader and composer - often associated with musicians of the free/avantgarde jazz-scene in Chicago. His band Natural Information Society uses an array of traditional instruments from all around the world to create droning, rocking soundscapes that go on for as long as you’d like them to. Here he is on his own with the guimbri - a three stringed skin-covered bass plucked lute used by the Gnawa people
