It plays into the disgusting narrative they have that homophobia is a matter of latent homosexuality. Isn’t it convenient that they have a way to blame gay death on gay people?

they use it to make it out like there’s no such thing as a straight homophobe. just self hating gay people. it absolves responsibility from straight people to fight against systemic homophobia or address homophobia, and instead blames those things on gay people.
