his mouth is slow and sour when it’s moving against yours, hands heavy on your waist, lips soaked with a coating of your spit and his own. 

“hajime, i have to speak to him, like, now.”

his hands are slipping up now, teeth nipping at your jaw, “forget about him yn, just a while longer.”

“i said i have to go,” there’s force behind your actions now, fidgeting beneath his grasp before, accidentally, shouldering him in the cheek, “i told you it was gonna end like this and i’m sorry, i really am. but, you just aren’t tetsuro.”

his breath is caught in his throat and his eyes are scratchy, smile faltering.

“yeah, okay, i get it. i’m not him… but i’m better! way fucking better. why can’t you see that?!”

tanaka’s taken place beside you both now, kiyoko tucked behind him, eyes narrowed when the two begin to argue. 

“don’t yell at her like that man, just go home.”

iwa’s chuckling and rubbing his sore cheek when he responds, “respectfully, this has nothing to do with you.”

“excuse me? it’s got everything to do with me when it’s happening in my fucking house.”

a few more words are exchanged when things start to get aggressive, sizing up, grabbing necks of shirts. 

and only when they’re really roughing each other up can you slip away, b-lining for the bathroom.

“whoever’s in here, open the fucking door,” you’ve been banging for a few minutes now, knuckles sore, bladder bursting and heart aching to talk to kuroo, “god, it’s my fucking bathroom, just let me piss.”

there’s a short squeak and a burst of air before he’s stood in front of you, dark eyebags, swollen lips pouted, and hair unusually flat.

just how you like it.

kuroo sniffles and harshly rubs his nose, “are you here to tell me you’re with iwaizumi, because… i- i can tell.”

he’s choking on his own tears, poking at his eyes to block the flow, to no avail, whimpering now.

he looks… really really good.

and then your mouth is on his, the doors slammed shut and his tears are trickling between your faces, moaning for forgiveness, “i’m so so sorry, i missed you so much yn, i love you, i-”

your teeth are clashing when you cut him off, hands trailing into his hair, “can you just shut the fuck up and kiss me?”

“but… shouldn’t we talk first?” he pulls back like it pains him to be away, warm palm wrapped around your wrist so you can’t venture too far.

sober kuroo is really pissing you off, “fine,” he’s blinking back at you, lips quivering, “are you gonna stand there all night or fucking talk?”

"so you're not mad at me?"

"don't be stupid, of course i'm fucking mad at you," theres a chill in the room now, breeze blowing in through the cracked window, "but... i can't stand not speaking to you, or seeing you… or touching you."

kuroo's flushed now, more flushed then you've ever seen him while drinking or after a long cry. bright pink in fact.

nose crinkled, fists rubbing hard into his eyes, again, like you're not really there, "well, can i have another kiss?"

you're flushed too now, despite the goosebumps on your arms and chattering of your teeth, "what do you think this is idiot? you stopped the kiss, now i don’t want to.”

"but you still love me, right?" he's got a weak smile, eyebrows wiggling and arms wide, the funny tetsuro you know well.

"no, i hate you." but you're still dipping into his arms either way.

you’ve told kuroo 4 times in the span of 11 minutes, but you can’t blame him because he’s drank enough to intoxicate a heavyweight champ, and so you entertain his confusion, “uhhh, sugas here, andddd daichi, shimizu, obviously… some first year girl, these two boys in second year, they’re pretty cool… oh! and michimiya, whoever that is. all their families as well, but, you know that.”

he’s snickering at something on his end, a glass clinking before he gulps and hisses, “you know who i’m with?”

“no, but put down the glass and tell me!” you know you’re in love in moments like these, when you can just sit and talk.

when you can both forget about the stuff that’s happened and focus on each other, close enough to know something can happen between you but far away enough that the chase is fun.

“he’s gone now anyways, he was here,” kuroo’s voice is dry now, doors closing behind him before he sighs, “i miss him so much yn.”

words dry up at that, and suddenly, everything that’s happened is all you can think about, “yeah, me too. i wish he was here.”

you’re two stops away from being back home when your phone starts ringing, warm in your coat pocket between you and iwaizumi.

he notices first, poking at the cheek laying on his firm shoulder to notify you, mumbling about how this is the second time they’ve called and it’s probably important.

you decided to take an early train to escape your mother as quickly as possible, so the suns just risen, light peeking through the windows. 

“tetsuro?” your voice is shaky when you answer, adrenaline coursing through you, “is everything okay? you’re okay, right?”

there’s a sigh and some ruffling before he replies, his throat is raw and his voice is hoarse, “m’fine, are you back? can you come and get me?”

“from where? are you in the hospital? shit kuro-”

he’s quick to cut you off with a shush, creaking floorboards and rushed whispers, “no, i’m not in the hospital. can you come and get me?”

cogs begin to turn in your head, teeth digging into your cheek, blocking your speech, “then why the fuck are you speaking so quietly?” your adrenaline is replaced by anger as you get louder, knee jerking up and down continuously while iwa watches on, “where the fuck are you then that you’re calling me so early?”

a woman’s voice peaks in the back now, sickly sweet and pathetic, “tetsuuu, come back to bed.” she’s obviously making an effort to be heard as he covers the speaker of his phone to muffle his response.

she’s whining about being cold and missing him and how he ruined her nice carpet with blood but that she’ll forgive him if he comes back to bed.

“who are you with tetsuro?”

“that doesn’t fucking matter yn, i need you, please can you come and get me.”

“not unless you tell me where you are!”

“stop fucking yelling at me! if you aren’t gonna help me, then fuck off!”

the call cuts off and you pull the phone away from your ear, heart slamming and eyes burning.

alisa’s in front of him, making out with one of her friends, equally drunk and equally stupid.

he thinks they’re in line for a club, instead of a bar like he was told, the second one of the night. there are people cheering for something, wide smiles and bright eyes, a guy in a costume walks past whistling at the girls in front of him.

“you’re just gonna let him do that?”

there’s spit between the two girls, lips swollen and voice’s strained with giggles.

“fuck am i s’posed t’do?” his words drawl together m, tongue heavy and mouth watering. he’s really hungry suddenly, and tired, he wants to lie down and let something take him, but he pushes through, “y’can’t do shit f’me if i get fucked so… just let it happen or stop.”

someone scoffs while he blinks and he’s inside now, his drink spilled down a girl’s top, music blaring and lights flashing.

he’s too preoccupied with collecting his thoughts to even think about apologising, slack-jawed and lazy-eyed.

“is this guy serious? and he fucking stinks, why did they even let you in here?”

he snuck into the apartment to get a shirt and some slacks before slipping out again, no shower or deodorant for the past week.

“babe, relax! he’s just drun- kuroo?”

there’s a guy now, slightly familiar, but not enough for him to reach out and dap him like he’s waiting for. he chooses to be a dick instead, “get your bitch man, making a fucking scene.”

“yo, what?” the hands retracted now, pulling back into a fist and slamming against the apple of his cheek.

when his eyes open, he’s lying on a plush bed in just his boxers, face aching and stomach twisting.

there’s a warm body next to him, he assumes alisa’s from the sight of a pink shag carpet when he lifts his head wearily.

when he reaches for his phone, the screen cracked and sticky, all he can think to say is fuck before he starts scrolling through his call log, settling on one name.

the sun is obnoxious in the sky, wide and loud while you sit under it, the steady inhale and exhale the only thing calming your nerves.

the smoke is heavy in your lungs when voice cuts through the silence of suburbia, gruff yet gentle.

his feet scuff against the floor as he makes his way towards you, settling onto porch step just above.

“didn’t know you smoked,” his voice trails off slightly, mind thinking of what to say next, “bad habit, or just for fun?”

your head turns then, nose crinkled and eyebrows on their way to meet, “the fuck is that s’posed to mean?”

his jaw drops at your language, the polar opposite to the way you were acting inside, sweet and doting, “woah, i was just saying that, you know, that shits not… good for you.”

”no shit sherlock,” the subject is now ash under your shoe, face tense and voice harsh, “i didn’t ask for health advice, nor your opinion. i don’t care if you’re into the gym, keep it to yourself. you don’t get to ignore me and then try and tell me about myself, it’s patronising.”

his eyes are rolling and he stands, the sun catching him and your breath, his stature impressive, as usual, “i came outside to say sorry, not to argue with my mom’s friend’s daughter. you should really grow up, not everything is a personal attack.”

you think about kuroo then, how he says similar things, preaches about health and how self-centred you can seem.

but he’s not here and you only realise that now, after snapping like he was, expecting a quick resolution. you haven’t had one of those in a while.

iwaizumi’s gazing down at you, eyes rich with something, patience maybe (?), and lips twitching when you began to speak, avoiding his eyes, “i’m sorry, okay? but don’t tell me to grow up, i’m bored of it.”

the smirk is plainly there now, bright and hypnotising.

you’re watching him now, the way he flexes - accidentally, unlike kuroo who’ll do it when he catches you staring. his hairs styled nicely and is chocolate brown instead of messy and dark. the freckles that are dusted across his nose instead of scars.

you look up into the sun instead of bearing the shame of comparing them any longer, guilt heavy in your chest.

the words are heavy on your tongue as they spill out, a calm washing over you, “it’s just that feeling when you realise you genuinely-”

the train carriage is deserted when you get on, air bitter when it nips at your nose just as the doors close.

you’re 16 when you get the call, sprawled across your bed’s mattress at your grandparents’ house, your smile wide and mind hazy from the stolen wine you’ve consumed.

your ringtone pulls you out of roundabout thoughts, excited to hear it’s the one you’ve appointed specially for tetsuro.

your hearts hammering against your rib cage when you eventually answer, “hiii testsy, what’s up?”

his answer isn’t immediate. in fact, it doesn’t come for a long time. all you can listen to are the loud cries of someone in the background, a woman begging.

you can hear your best friend’s ragged breaths, how the words get caught in his throat everytime they try to escape.

the worst is coming, there’s no denying it.

worse than what was the end of your world two years ago.

the end of his world his world is significantly worse.

sitting without confirmation kills you, intoxication slipping from you when you finally fill in the gaps, silence no longer good enough, “did you find him? tetsuro, what happened?”

“i can’t- i don’t know how to say it.” his voice is so small. too small for someone as big as him.

someone so bright and cocky who never needs to sugarcoat what he says.

for once, theres something he doesn’t know how to say.

and that’s all you need to hear before your tears start falling, and his begin to fall with yours, tethered by the shared loss of someone so important.

“he’s dead, yn. he’s- he’s never coming back.”

the cries in the background get louder when he utters those words and a man’s voice has to begin soothing everyone, false comforts for anyone who knows how life ends for someone in so much pain.

it’s 4am when you finally get back to tokyo, exhausted from sobbing, your fingers raw from biting off the skin. they fiddle with the pack of peace cigarettes that stay in your pocket.

the only brand you’ve ever smoked.

tetsuro looks like shit when you finally see him, dressed in a black suit, bloodshot eyes, shaky breaths.

it’s been a week since you came back, cutting your summer countryside escape short to be with him, in spite of him brushing you off constantly, and understandably.

he makes you stand with him and his parents during the funeral, his hand wrapped in yours, cold to the touch and rough from volleyball.

he takes slow and shaky breaths throughout it all, especially when he has to carry his brother out on his shoulder, the weight heavy in a way he never thought he’d experience.

the reception is solemn, and he sits in a corner with his knees spread, elbows resting on them as he holds his head in his large hands, crying quietly.

you and kenma are sat closely on either side of him, both ridden with grief but keeping a brave face for your friend.

tetsuro has a drink, to “numb the pain” is what his father says to you all. but one drink leads to two, and two leads to four, and four leads to his head hanging in a toilet.

but the previous pain is forgotten, because he’s able to forget that his brother is wrapped in a coffin at 20.

his last pack of cigarettes wrapped your purse, smuggled from underneath his freezing pillow case.

when you leave him in that room to warm the pillow case, his tear-streaked cheek snug against it, you think about how natural he looked with a beer in his hand.

how uncomfortable it made you feel.

but you can’t call someone out when you’re just as bad, so, you force yourself to follow your best friend go down a steep and rocky road, not too far behind yourself, because you can’t bare to let him do it alone.

at 14, you know a lot.

you know pretty fluent english, you know how to write complex essays, and, you understand algebra at a level that's surprising to many your age.

you also know that your parents dislike each other. can't stand each other. hate each other.

since you moved to tokyo two years ago, you had realised this unfortunate fact.

the way your mother resented your father without mercy due to the move from everything she had known. the carpet yanked from beneath her.

the way she resented you for tying her to him, despite her best efforts to prove otherwise.

from the day the last box was packed, you knew their divorce was on the horizon.

and now, as you sit on the end of 14-year-old kuroo's bed, confiding in him what you already knew, you don't need to cry, let alone want to.

you’re too old to now. “much too old” is what your mother says.

you don't blame her for hating you, or your father. and you don't blame your father for hating her. that ships sailed.

but you do hate having to sit here, skin itchy and nose running from the strong scent of cologne from his older brother, knowing they're both watching you, confused.

"you want a cigarette or something...?" his older brother's voice is deeper, more mature, slightly comforting since it reminds you of your dad. back when he had it in him to be strong.

you know that pretending he's your dad is wrong, embarrassing even, but the offer of familiarity that comes from him and the thought of a cigarette, something you know is supposed to help stress, quiets the thought, "yeah, thanks."

"don't get hooked though, can't have tetsy funding the habit." the rapid pace of your heartbeat decreases the more he speaks.

"vou shouldn't smoke, yn. your brains not devel-”

“my parents are getting divorced tetsuro, shut up.”

you know he’s right. you won’t have the self control to stop, similarly to how you obsessively refer to your mother as “mama”, regardless of how she punishes you.

you know this for sure when the coughing stops and things are foggier but feel clearer.

you know that you’ll get back inside and drop asleep next to kuroo, basking in his warmth and soft scent.

you know you’ll wake up the next morning and walk home ashamed, refusing to acknowledge the burn at the back of your eyes.

you know your parents will pretend to be a united front until your mother moves back home, and then she’ll only contact you monthly. maybe bi-monthly.

you know you still won’t cry.

you know a lot.

for once, you think you know too much.

for the past 15 minutes, you’d smoked 2 cigarettes and gulped down 3 bottles of water.

and for the past 15 minutes, you’d also been pretending kuroo was invisible, busying yourself with scrolling through instagram and taking drags from the cigarette loosely dangling from your lips.

“y’know, if you’re not gonna reply, i’ll just talk at you,” he paused, as if to give you a chance to talk before he began to rant.

with no answer, he sucked in a quick breath and continued, “you can’t be pissed off with me for kissing a girl after you kicked me out of your bed and called me your brother. for years, years yn, i’ve been making it clear how much i value you, and you ignore it! i’ve been so lost, i went to see-”

“fuck you kuroo.”

your voice is hoarse as it slips past your cigarette, dangling from your chapped lips, red-rimmed eyes glaring through him, “you think you’re so fucking great, huh? so innocent? well for all of these years, i’ve watched you fuck girls in my bed, confess to them, invite them to your stupid, mediocre high school games to grope them afterwards, so that doesn’t show much affection, does it?”

“what? what the fuck are you-”

“i went to see him every month. sat in that graveyard and sobbed, alone, because you were too pathetic. you think you can guilt trip me with your little last minute visit? i know you, kuroo. i know you better than anyone. and you’ve been the shittiest person to be around since he died.”

the airs thicker now, similarly to the words that tumble out of his mouth, face no longer ridden with remorse, “shittier than your mum? you don’t get to say anything about my brother because he was my brother! not yours, mine!”

your hand is warm when it hits his face, knocking the air out of his lungs and the balance he once held, watching him stumble backwards and rush to pull his hand to his face.

“you said you would never treat me like she does, but you’ve treated me worse. i should’ve let everyone give up on you, fucking drunk.”

the movements you take are quick now, pulling on the door to the apartment block and rushing up the stairs away from kuroo while your hands shake and ears ring from him yelling about what a bitch you’ve become and how he wishes he never met you.

but, to be fair, you did tell him not to come to your house.

it’d been nine hours since your last smoke break, just before you had gotten in the shower and just after you’d answered a phone call from your mother, inviting you to easter.

the tremble of your fingers while you pulled out your single and plopped to the ground gave away just how much you were craving it, the alcohol in your system making your desire grow deeper.

you felt your heart slow as the rush hit you, previously tense shoulders relaxing.

‘shots’ was playing inside and you could hear bokuto screaming along, but for some reason, giggles from across the street peaked your interest, causing you to lift your droopy eyes to the scene in front of you:

he was sat on the pavement, a glass in his hand, presumably a whiskey and coke that he’d stolen from another bar or club as he made his way here, and a lazy smile painted onto his face.

the cut above his eyebrow was open again, and deeper, the split in his skin obvious from this far away despite your inebriated sight.

the girl was in the road, bent down to his eye level and rubbing her hands over his face before she leaned in to kiss him, softly at first until he grabbed her, pulling her closer to deepen the kiss.

you could feel the remaining rationale leave your body, throat burning and chest aching when you stood, marching over to the two of them.

the words leaving your mouth blended into one, knees wobbling and heart slamming against your ribs, “we don’t talk f’two days and y’fuck a random bitch?!”

all colour from his face is draining at your presence, pushing the girl away and jumping up to rush towards you, “what’re you doing out here alone? where’s kenma and everyone el-”

his hands are reaching for you and all you can think is who is this? this boy that i’ve known for years and all i feel is disgust. and an urge to reach out and slap him, and then kiss him until he can’t see straight.

you can feel the pool of saliva in your mouth grow into a lake when the girl inches closer, smirking, “who’s this babe?”

“fuck you, bitch. just go around fucking other people’s boyfriends, huh?”

kuroo’s face is the epitome of confusion at this, blinking rapidly, “boyfriend? the fuck are you talking about yn?”

“you’re just gonna let her call me a bitch?” the girl pipes up again, ignoring your previous remarks.

the names familiar and once you get a real look at her, realisation kicks you in the ass, “you’re fucking lev’s sister?! you’re a whore, kuroo. a whore!”

“ugh, can we just go? she’s obviously just drunk. crazy cow.”

the insults you’re slinging at kuroo stop as soon as she says those words, all attention turning to her before you lunge forward, grabbing her hair and slapping her across the face.

she’s yelping for him now, struggling to shove you off before you both tumble to the ground, still punching and yanking at her blonde locks.

“fuck, yn, get off of her!”

there’s a crowd forming now, all watching as you beat the brakes off of this girl, not even registering the possible consequences of this.

and then you’re being dragged up, only after she lands a punch on your nose, ring slicing your skin open.

the floor is beneath your feet again and warm tears are pulling mascara down your blazing cheeks.

with very quick succession, the result of vigorous movement while nauseous and experiencing a nic rush catches up to you, and you puke.

you puke an unbelievable amount, tuning out the blaring of kiyoko’s voice yelling at kuroo and kenma’s hand gentle on your back.

the last trails of spittle trickle from your chin, jerking up and speeding away from the group.

“yn, wait,” you can hear kuroo running behind you, “fuck, wait!”

his hand is firm on your shoulder, spinning you around, “i’m sorry, okay? she’s no one, she’s nothing. let me take you home. i’ll look after you.”

“no, you won’t.”

“what?”

“leave me alone. don’t call me, don’t text, don’t come by my house. i don’t think i ever want to see you again.”

the firm grip isn’t there when you walk off, your own hands grazing over the cut on your face, your heartbeat ringing through your ears.

kuroo is currently curled under your blankets, mindlessly staring out of the open window while you type at your desk, eyes rolling, “only because you opened the window.”

“yeah, to air out the smell of smoke!”

“fuck off.”

you can see him in the corner of your eye, pulling the hairs at the nape of his neck before glancing at you and back to the window.

he’s waiting for you to get bored, and slide in next to him, that usual wide smile on your face as you slot into place.

waiting for you to settle into your routine and humour his stupid hypotheticals, ignore the way his hands rub the small of your back and how his heart beats faster when you shuffle slightly against his, normally, covered skin.

waiting for the normality of pushing aside your feelings just so you can keep him around.

“d’you remember when-”

“maybe you should go home kuroo.”

the wind blowing in is significantly colder now, much like the expression that dawns your face.

and kuroo just gazes back at you, confused.

everything seemed fine.

sure, sometimes you have your moments, but this wasn’t one of them.

you weren’t clasping for cigarettes or letting your teeth draw blood from your lip, you were straight faced. eyes passing through him.

“yeah, whatever. you’re right,” there’s a pause when he waits for a reaction, but nothing comes, “sure my roommates miss me.”

his gathering is quick, only because he plans to leave with nothing but the clothes on his back and his phone clenched tightly in his fist, irritation radiating from him.

“you can’t just keep inviting me in and throwing me out yn. y’know that, right?”

you can’t help but roll your eyes at that, “if i didn’t, i’d only see you when you were on death’s door and hungover. i'm not here for your disposal.”

“neither am i!”

“just fuck off! you’re stood around looking stupid, leave!”

the door slams hard after that, angry footsteps clattering away from you until the front door slams and silence envelops the house.
