I look at you and see an older version of me. When I told you that I tend to be cold-hearted (at least, I think I’ve told you this..maybe even more than once..) I meant it because I have a history of it. The most common complaint from people I’ve dated in the past is “you don’t show much emotion”. I’d be very caught up in what I’d have going on in my life and easily lose track of my phone for hours leaving who ever I was with at the time hanging for a bit. Completely unintentional. I’d reassure my partner this didn’t mean I didn’t care about them, I just had stuff to do. Well, as I’ve continued learning, I’ve realized those little signs of “I’m thinking of you even while I’m busy” are actually really important. I’ve told you before that I get a little sad when I don’t hear from you for a while and then it’s worse when I don’t even know why I’m not hearing from you. All of a sudden the roles are reversed and I can finally empathize with the people I’ve dated. I could never fully understand it until now. I’m getting really emotionally attached to you and all I want to do is share everything I do, think of, have happen in my day, etc with you. I want the same of you and when I don’t get it I begin questioning why. If we’re basically on the same page, shouldn’t you be in a state of mind where you also can’t help but want to tell me everything? I want to know who you interact with at work, what things people around you do that bother you or make you happy, when you’re going to the gym, that you’re staying at work late, etc. I struggle a lot with this feeling because it use to bother me when my exs would put that pressure on me and it began feeling smothering. I don’t want to come off as clingy/needy/smothering or anything like that at all with you so instead, I internalize it. I want to be open with you but at the same time I don’t want to scare you off. I just keep telling myself “well, maybe with time that will develop”. The flip side to that is, what if it doesn’t develop because of the fact I never mentioned to you how much I want to know of you. I also think that maybe you just don’t find it necessary because it not substantial information, to you, it may be filler information. To me though, it’s interesting, I like knowing and it not only pulls me closer to you but makes me feel ok doing the same. I get scared that I’m boring you or annoying you with the things I tell you. Unnecessary drama, things people and I have talked about, the things that bother me at work, etc. I can’t be feeling that way though because the moment I let those feelings take over, I will shut down and let you in less and less, trying to filter on my own what I think you may or may not want to hear.
So, here’s the other thing I’m struggling with and it’s sharing my emotions. It shouldn’t be your job but sometimes I actually need you to pry and take certain cues to reassure me that what I could say will be met with understanding. From observation (and I could be reading this wrong) you don’t seem to be very good at giving feedback to feelings that could be considered uncomfortable. Like if i were really angry or sad. It feels like you shut down feeling like you don’t know the right way to react..? Again, this could be in my head but I think I’ve felt that. You definitely can’t shut down if I’m going to talk about my feelings because I have the hardest time sharing my feelings but I have to overcome that so that we can build even more on our foundation of good communication. The other issue I have with sharing emotions is getting you to open up. Sometimes I will sense something wrong and I want to pry but feel like there is a boundary I can’t be crossing. I don’t really want to feel like that. I want to feel like I can get you to open up even if it’s still a little uncomfortable with you because I can create that comfort. I know you’ve said you need a moment to collect yourself but I feel like that should mostly apply to heated situations, not just something thats been bothering you and you need to get off your chest.
My main goal here is to always feel like your girlfriend since that’s the step we chose to take and with these issues I end up with doubts. Like we’re still purely in the stage of cautiously getting to know each other when we should have a lot of those fears eliminated by the commitment we’ve chosen. I really hope I’m not coming off as smothering, these feelings are foreign to me and I’m trying to be as rational as possible while still getting in touch with how I’m feeling.
