Which Rage Language Are You?
men, raise the drawbridge
when you're angry, all your defenses go up. the unfortunate person or thing that managed to piss you off is suddenly talking to a wall. On the inside, you're screaming and crying and cussing them out, but somehow you can't express it. you're blank. emotionless. to anyone's knowledge, you could be zoning out of a lecture. because of this, it's hard to express how you're feeling when the person asks for your thoughts. you've choked your feelings down, and they won't come back up.

Varrick was... Overstimulated. That was one way of putting it. So much had happened that day! He'd gotten engaged, became a hero, seen a new spirit portal open thanks to the superweapon he'd invented that had nearly wiped out him and everything he cared about, but it hadn't, and he was safe now, alone with his fiancee and trying to process everything that had happened.
His fiancee. No longer his assistant. That was the part he really couldn't get over. He felt like he hadn't even had time to really think about it. She'd said yes. How were things going to change?
He felt overcome with it even as he opened the door to his penthouse. Thankfully the building had escaped unscathed from the battle. He wasn't even really used to being back in Republic City. He was happy, of course he was, but he didn't know what things were going to be like now. Whatever it was, Varrick would be happy with it because it was with Zhu Li. Even if he had to make his own tea now. And wash his own clothes. And fold them. And hang them. And iron them, and, oh, spirits, how many steps did clothing even have?
Was that what married life was? Washing your own socks? It had always seemed so unappealing before. Would it suit him? Was he in a bold, new, independent era? That sounded terrifying. Still, he was prepared to face it with characteristic bravery and good humor. He was a hero now, after all.
He got to the door first. "After you," he said to Zhu Li as he opened the door, then forgot to wait and stepped inside. He realized as he did kt and stepped outside again to keep holding the door open. "Ladies first."
The request catches her off guard, though she really should've expected it. She'd gotten so wrapped up in admiring him, in touching him, that she'd nearly forgotten that she had a body of her own. It's not that she's against being touched; even through the thick fabric of her bulky jacket, his hands on her make her heart beat faster. It just isn't priority. Besides, in her opinion, she's not much to look at.
She peels her scarf off slowly, stalling for just a moment. It isn't that she thinks she's unattractive, she's just… unremarkable. Average. Nothing to write home about. She opens her jacket and sets it aside.
Maybe in a lineup of other perfectly average people she'd be more comfortable with this; but, Varrick's long legs and perfect hair are a hard act to follow. He could star in his own movers if he wasn't better suited to being the genius behind the camera. Or maybe, she considers as she begins unbuttoning her shirt, she'd feel more confident if she didn't know the undergarments beneath it were stretched out and beige. She couldn't even remember the last time she'd bought anything new. If ever there were an occasion, this was it. Unfortunately, she'd been a bit busy saving the world to stop for lingerie shopping.
The buttons of her shirt are all open, but still she holds the fabric together to cover her chest as she looks sternly at him. "If you laugh, I'm leaving."
She releases her death grip on the shirt and allows it to fall off her shoulders and onto the floor. Her simple, beige, no frills bra is just slightly too snug, accentuating her c-cups. Despite her hesitation, she wants to make it clear that she isn't having second thoughts about taking the lead. She grabs his hands and firmly presses them to her chest.
[Zhu Li's morals are as grey as they can get. She values loyalty more so than anything else; when Varrick was actively commiting crimes, she was on board and didn't care who's lives they were ruining in the process. No guilt, no second thoughts. When he decided to become good, she was on board, no questions asked.
It was never about power or personal benefits, only about what would make the person she cares about most the happiest. She's not a very social person, but when she does make other friends, this extends to them. She'll always take a friend's side no matter how morally wrong they are.]
@zhulii
If there was one thing Varrick had learned since expanding his business beyond the first canoe, it was that people were difficult to work with. It was the sad truth that few people in this world were even half as brilliant as he was. He'd spent a lot of time trying to explain himself to people when he was young, but that had only taught of him it was a waste of time. People understood or they didn't. Varrick was a genius regardless.
Employees who were somewhat removed from Varrick on the chain of command weren't too much of an issue. He didn't have to deal with them directly a lot of the time, and he mostly just sent them off with orders. His worker bees didn't have to be smart. No, Varrick Industries wasn't hemorrhaging employees in any type of employee but one. Varrick's personal assistant.
Ever since Varrick Global Industries had gotten successful enough to warrant hiring one, Varrick had had nothing but trouble. Never in a million years would he have expected it to be this difficult to find a good assistant. It couldn't have been such a complicated role, but then Varrick had never been an assistant. (That was exactly why he was such a talented businessman, so he didn't have to listen to anyone else.) He had given an endless supply of second chances when his "assistants" couldn't follow simple orders. When they couldn't do one thing, he would give them another order instead. So many opportunities to prove themselves capable assistants, but apparently he was "ridiculous" and his demands "incoherent." He was "insane" (hadn't they already figured that out by the time he hired them?) and "unreasonable." As much as it would have been nice to blame them for quitting, it was becoming clear that the average person was not prepared to keep up with someone like Varrick. It seemed Republic City's workforce was not well suited for the employ of an eccentric genius.
He had phoned up the agency himself. He said he wanted the best they had, nothing less. They hadn't seemed certain what to make of it.
Well, there is one person, they said. But she doesn't come cheap.
Varrick Global Industries was making a tidy profit. He could afford it. Truly, Varrick was skeptical, but, ever the optimist, told them to send her over first thing the next morning.
The next morning found Varrick with other matters on his mind. As his shipping business grew, pirates were becoming a serious problem. They were starting to attack ships with the Varrick Industries logo on sight. He'd just gotten word that he'd lost a shipment of dried fire flakes to pirates outside the South Pole. Not a hugely expensive loss, this time, but there was no guarantee it wouldn't be a shipment of rare and exotic art next. They were sitting ducks out there--what was he supposed to do about it?
Varrick was pacing, thinking hard about the problem. He was not looking at the clock or the door, thinking about when his new assistant was supposed to arrive.
foppishmuses:
“Yeah, sure, go ahead.” Varrick wasn’t really paying attention. He was more focused on solving his problem. It felt like the solution was obvious, but he couldn’t quite grasp it. “I can just hire armed guards, that’s obvious, but it would take a fortune to get enough to hold off an entire crew of pirates for every ship. But if there was a way to have one person do the job of a whole team…”
He needed something to fill the gap. Technology, bending, anything would do. Varrick hopped into his desk chair and vigorously rummaged for a photo of one of his ships, throwing anything that was in his way to the side. Things scattered to the floor, but he didn’t care. He had forgotten his new assistant was even there. She wasn’t relevant at the moment.
He stared at the photo, intently enough that if he were a firebender he would have burned a hole in it. He tried to imagine boarding it. The pirates’ ship would have to come up on the side. There was nowhere else to board but the deck. If there was a way to make the deck impassible…
“I’ve got it! We’ll build a wall!” Varrick stood up, smacking his fist into his hand. Then he thought about it a little more. “No, then we won’t be able to get our goods off the ship. We’ll build a door in the wall! Well, then the pirates could just use the door. What’s a wall that’s not a wall…?”
Varrick sat down again, head in his hands. He was thinking. And he was hungry. He’d had someone here to take care of that a second ago, hadn’t he? Why weren’t they doing their job? “Assistant! Where’s my lunch?”
She spends the next hour or so remarkably productive, considering the total lack of guidance. Typically, a new boss would spend this time showing her where her work station was and going over a list of her daily duties. But… she can work with vague demands if that's how this is going to be.
Sending the necessary telegrams is the easy part. Lunch is a bit more of a puzzle. But, ultimately, it really doesn’t take long at all to pop into the handful of restaurants and food vendors located a convenient distance from the office, ask if they’d ever had any orders from the Global Industries building, and find out what those orders were. It seems as though her new boss is a man of habit; he has his favorites and he sticks to them. She works out an agreement with the food seller that this one will go on his tab; she’s yet to be allocated any business funds, and it’s sure as hell not coming out of her own pocket. There’s a line between making a good first impression and being taken advantage of that she has no interest in crossing.
She’s barely in the front door before she hears him shouting for his lunch. Perfect timing. She bursts into the office, places the food on his desk, and scoops the scattered papers and photographs off the floor in one smooth, graceful movement. She places the papers in a neat stack at the corner of his desk. She’ll have to come up for an actual organization system for all this later. “Here, sir.”

OPEN STARTER;;
Bolin, the president's assistant, opens the simple wood door emblazoned with "Presidential Office" and ushers her guest inside. Zhu Li is seated at the desk, tapping a stack of papers on it to neatly align them before setting them aside.
"Bolin, drinks, please." She addresses him politely yet concisely as her guest enters; Bolin gives his agreement and leaves the office, closing the door behind him. Zhu Li leans her elbows on her desk and folds her fingers together, resting her chin on her hands. "I don't usually take meetings on such short notice, but… it sounded urgent. What can I do for you?"

[People who think Zhu Li/Varrick is abusive watched a different show. She's shown saying "no, I'm not going to do that" when his ideas are genuinely things she doesn't agree with/doesn't want to do, and he repeatedly describes her as having vicious sharp teeth and being able to kill a man, as though her aggressiveness and ability to stand up for herself are traits he admires in her, not traits that inconvenience him.
How much more character building did you want from minor side characters on a children's show? 90% of the anti-zhurrick sentiment I've seen has just been people ignoring canon because they think it's more woke to paint the small asian women as a soft submissive wallflower who's too shy to speak up for herself.
I also see a lot of people taking her getting mad at him right before their engagement out of context. She screams at him about not appreciating her enough right after he acts like he's going to caress her cheek, maybe even kiss her, but then slaps his hand down on her shoulder like a boy scout instead. She wasn't mad because she hated doing things for him. She was mad because she wanted him to see her and appreciate her as more than just an assistant and after all that time of them being separated and thinking they'd never see each other again and almost dying he STILL wasn't getting it.]
