I drove my mother's car to Calum's house, the midnight fog wrapping around the vehicle.
I was still surprised that my mom had let me go to the party. She thought a party full of desperate teenagers was much better than a band's concert at a bar.
So, thanks to my mother's thoughtful decisions, I was now standing on the street in front of Calum's house, the address of which I knew from a note Michael had left in my locker that morning.
I parked one street down, looked in the rearview mirror, and fixed my lipstick before getting out of the car.
School had been incredibly boring. The classes were driving me crazy, Luke hardly ever went to school so I didn't talk to him or see him, and Michael barely spoke to me.
Those guys were weird as hell.
I was about to knock on the front door when a boy ran outside and threw up in the front yard.
I walked into the big house, making my way through a sea of teenagers gathered at the main entrance.
The lights were dim, and the deafening music made it nearly impossible to make out a single word anyone was saying.
There was no one I knew, obviously, so I headed to the kitchen, looking for something to drink.
I poured myself a glass of soda when a familiar voice came into the room.
“Hi, Y/N,” he said, clearly not as sober as I was used to seeing him.
“Hi, Mike,” I said, relieved to see a familiar face.
“I was low-key hoping you wouldn't come, you know?” His drunk voice louder than needed in the relatively quiet kitchen.
“What...? Why do you say that?”
His words caught me off guard. I thought we were friends…
"That way you wouldn't have to meet the boys, and I wouldn't embarrass myself in front of you."
He laughed, grabbing another cup from the keg next to me.
"Oh, don't worry, Mike—you could never make a fool of yourself to me."
I said sweetly, touching one of his shoulders, relieved that he was just joking.
He looked at me with compassion and let out a soft chuckle.
“I'm not—it's just that I like you.”
He clearly wasn't himself that night; in fact, ever since we met on the beach, he'd been acting strangely.
He took another drink, leaning against the counter beside me.
For a moment, neither of us said anything. The music coming from the living room sounded almost like a murmur in the kitchen.
I turned around to meet his gaze.
“So... where are the guys?” Trying to cheer him up or at least enjoy the party.
“Well, yeah, he's the only one I know besides you, ha ha.”
“Did you come here just to ask me about him?”
“No, of course not, I was just trying to make small talk, Mike.”
“No, sorry, it's just that...”
“You guys really don't get along, do you?” I tried to lighten the mood.
Instead of answering, he took a deep swallow of his drink.
“Maybe you should stop that.”
“Maybe,” he replied harshly.
After a pause, during which he seemed to be weighing his words, he finally answered my initial question:
“That doesn't answer my question, Mike.”
“Well, it's the only answer I've got, Y/N.”
"Since when have you hated each other?" I asked, confused.
"I don't hate him... but I guess it's been that way since forever."
"Well, that's a long time, don't you think?"
"Well, one thing's for sure: it's not my fault."
“You know the answer.” He rolled his eyes.
“Well, what did he do? Luke seems like a pretty nice guy.”
“You're only saying that now because you don't know him like I do.”
“Well, tell me what happened so I can understand.”
He seemed to think about it for a moment before a voice called out to him from the next room:
He turned toward the sound.
“Coming!” He answered the voice that was calling him.
He pushed himself away from the counter, heading toward the kitchen entrance.
He staggered a little before turning back to look at me and say:
“Sure,” I said, with a bad feeling in my stomach.
I stared at the doorway for a moment before pouring myself some beer and taking a sip—I needed it after whatever that was.
I was lost in my cup when a voice, warm as liquor, drifted in from the other entrance to the kitchen.
Leaning against the doorframe, Luke looked me up and down, smirking.
“I wasn't looking for you,” I said haughtily.
He pushed himself away from the doorframe as he walked into the kitchen, poured himself a glass of beer, and stood in front of me—not too far away, but close enough to make a statement.
He leaned over a little and looked into my cup.
“You don't seem like the beer type.”
“It's been a long night.”
“In that case, I think I should help you have a good night.”
He put a hand next to where I was sitting.
“Oh, really?” I asked, unable to hide my blush.
“Yeah, yeah,” he said, and positioned himself between my legs.
I felt butterflies in my stomach as he leaned toward me until a voice interrupted us.
“Luke, get your dirty ass over here.”
He straightened up and cursed in exasperation.
“Great timing, huh?” I said nervously.
“Always,” he replied, taking a sip.
He headed for the kitchen exit and turned back to look at me.
“Me?” I was a little taken aback that he wanted me to go with him.
“Of course. I want to introduce you to the guys.”
“I already know Michael.”
“Yeah… he doesn’t count.”
With that smile and those sparkling eyes, it was impossible to say no to him.
He motioned for me to follow him, positioned himself behind me, guiding me with one hand on my lower back—something that gave me a strange sense of déjà vu.
But I chose to ignore it, wisely.
The living room was even more crowded now, and I realized just how loud the music was compared to the atmosphere in the kitchen.
After wandering around looking for the guys, we found them sitting in an old leather armchair.
“Luke!” a drunk Calum exclaimed, excited.
“You've got company,” the tanned guy pointed out.
“Guys, this is Y/N—she's here with me.”
“Don't be a liar, Luke,” I whispered into his ear.
The guys immediately burst into laughter and exchanged looks.
Luke just smiled, proudly.
The guys stood up and greeted me.
“Calum, the bassist—but I guess you know that; you were at the show, right?”
“Yeah, great show, by the way.”
I shook his hand and turned to the next guy.
“Ashton, the best drummer in the world.”
“Humble" I said and shook his hand
"Nice to meet you, Ashton.”
I laughed at his introduction.
I looked for the boy that just moments before was with me.
He was the only one of the three I knew beforehand, and he was the only one who hadn’t stood up to greet me.
He just looked up and gave me a nod.
“Dude, what’s your problem?” Calum asked, giving him a tap on the shoulder.
“It’s fine; we already know each other.”
“Seriously, this really is a small town,” Ashton pointed out.
Then we all took a seat on some couches in the corner of the room, Luke sitting beside me.
When we sat down, he put one of his arms behind me, resting on my shoulder.
It felt good; it felt good being around him.
For a few minutes, I just watched them, telling jokes and making fun of themselves.
They were nothing like the guys I’d seen on the show—there, they seemed untouchable, out of reach—but here, sitting in an old couch drinking cheap beer, they were just four more idiots.
After a few jokes that were way too gross to repeat here, Ashton leaned toward me and asked:
“So... Y/N, how did you meet Luke?”
Ashton and Calum exchanged a confused look.
“Skipping class,” Luke added.
“That explains everything,” Ashton said, laughing.
“Well, Luke’s barely ever at school,” Calum said, laughing along with Ashton.
I gave Luke a judgmental look, frowning.
“Don’t look at me like that, Y/N—you’re in no position to judge.”
“Maybe, ” I said, still frowning.
“Guys, what do you say we turn this into a little more of a party?” Ashton said, standing up.
“Oh no,” Luke said, putting a hand over his face.
“What?” I asked, confused.
“You don't want to know,” Luke said.
“Oh, of course you do,” Ashton replied.
“How about a drinking game?” he asked with a grin.
“Hell yeah!” Calum exclaimed, backing up his friend.
“What do you have in mind, Ash?” Luke asked.
“Truth or dare,” said the guy with the bandana, picking up an empty bottle from the floor.
“Oh no,” Michael muttered.
“I'm not sure, guys...” I said hesitantly.
“Come on, Y/N,” Calum said with puppy-dog eyes.
I looked to Luke for support, but he just crossed his arms.
Then I looked to Michael, but he just avoided my gaze.
“I guess I don’t have a choice, right?”
“Well...” I said, giving in.
“Okay, so the rules are: answer the question or do the dare, or take a shot—but don’t be assholes and chicken out on the dares,” he said, pointing at Calum and Michael.
We sat closer together to form a circle, my knees touching Luke’s.
I felt a strange sense of trust toward him—I barely knew him, but it felt like I’d known him forever.
I smiled at him before Ashton started the game.
He spun the bottle so hard it almost broke against one of the table legs; when it finally stopped, it was pointing at Michael.
“Great,” he said sarcastically.
“Truth or dare?” Ashton said with a mischievous look.
“Truth,” Michael said, warily.
“Who’s the most annoying person in this room?”
Michael took a sip of his drink and glanced briefly at Luke.
“Do I really have to answer that?”
“Not really—we all know what you’re thinking,” Luke said dryly.
“Ouch,” Calum said, attempting to whisper.
“Why? That wasn't even a real question,” Mike complained.
“Rules are rules,” Ashton said with a shrug.
Michael took a swig from his nearly empty cup.
The bottle spun again, and this time it landed on Calum.
“Oh, God,” he said, looking up at the ceiling.
Ashton burst out laughing.
“Truth or dare?” Luke asked, leaning toward him.
“Dare?” Calum said, fearful of what was to come.
“I dare you to kiss the next person who walks through that door,” Luke said with a crooked smile.
“Actually, that’s not that bad…”
We all turned toward the entrance, waiting.
Until a guy—probably a freshman, and a total nerd—with dirty glasses, acne all over his face, a T-shirt stained with pizza, and picking his nose walked in.
Calum's smile disappeared.
“Screw you, I’m not doing that.”
“Are you sure about that?” Ashton asked, pouring a shot of tequila into his cup.
“Oh, fuck you both,” he said and stood up, stumbling as he made his way toward the guy.
“I can’t believe he’s actually going to do it!” I exclaimed in surprise.
“We’re just getting started, baby,” Luke said, his arm once again draped over my shoulder.
Across the room, Calum was talking to the guy, apparently trying to explain the situation.
Then, after a moment, Calum leaned in and gave him a quick kiss.
Calum immediately came back, red as a tomato, and buried his face in a pillow.
“You're crazy, man!” Ashton shouted, nearly choking on his laughter.
“I'm never playing with you guys again. NEVER!”
Calum yelled, throwing the pillow at Ashton.
“Next!” Ashton exclaimed, still laughing as he grabbed the bottle and spun it again.
I cursed myself for coming to this party the moment the bottle pointed at me.
“Truth or dare?” Calum asked, holding a bottle in his hand.
I considered my options for a moment, and after taking a sip of my drink, I answered:
“Truth,” I said, probably playing it safe.
“Have you ever run away from home?” Calum asked, going easy on me.
“Well, yeah... I had to sneak out the other night to go to your show.”
“Really?” Ashton asked, laughing.
“Yeah, ha ha, my mom wouldn't let me.”
“You actually snuck out?” Calum asked.
“I did.” I answered proudly.
“And you didn't get caught?”
“Would you do it again?” asked Michael, who had been very quiet up until that point.
“Maybe,” I replied with a shrug.
“Maybe?” Luke repeated, leaning slightly closer to me.
“Only if the occasion calls for it.”
“And did it last time?” asked Luke again, smiling playfully.
“I think so,” I said, biting my lower lip and then hiding behind my drink.
After a round of laughter and shots, Ashton took charge of the bottle again and spun it once more.
The empty bottle spun several times before coming to a stop, pointing at Luke.
He didn’t say anything, unlike the rest of us, who had complained.
“Truth or dare?” Ashton asked, though he surely already knew the answer.
“Dare,” Luke replied instantly, without even hesitating.
“I dare you to kiss someone’s neck here,” Ashton said, his grin growing wider.
Luke shook his head slightly, letting his gaze rest on each of us, weighing his options.
For a moment I thought he was going to choose me; my heart skipped at the possibility.
But my excitement faded the instant I saw him move toward the other end of the circle—toward Michael.
The guys gasped in surprise, just like I did.
Michael stopped laughing instantly and stepped back.
Why would he want to kiss him on the neck if they hated each other so much?
Maybe it was some kind of mental torture for the other.
Before Luke could get too close,
Michael exclaimed irritably:
“Don't even think about it, Lucas.”
Luke stopped in front of him, a crooked smile spreading across his face.
“I don’t think you have much of a choice, Wolfie,”
Luke whispered to him so quietly that I could barely make out the last words.
Wolfie—what a weird nickname…
Michael's expression darkened.
“Mike, don’t ruin the show for us!” Calum yelled, barely able to control himself.
This was just as strange for them as it was for me.
Michael took a long swig from the bottle of tequila Ashton was holding and said,
“I hope I don't remember this tomorrow.”
“I bet you will,” Luke whispered to him once more, and without further prelude, he leaned down toward the blond’s neck and kissed him.
The entire group exploded.
I stared at them, completely stunned.
Luke pulled away from Michael’s neck, wiped his lips with the back of his hand, and casually returned to his seat.
Michael's face was bright red, his brow furrowed.
And we all doubled over with laughter.
I had to admit that seeing Luke lean over Michael had done something to me—seeing him so confident...
The games went on for a while until Ashton got bored and exclaimed:
“Okay, enough truth or dare. Who’s up for beer pong?”
“You know I am, baby!” Calum seconded.
They jumped to their feet, and Michael reluctantly followed them.
I waited to see what Luke would do.
He took a sip of his drink; his Adam's apple moved as he swallowed, and his lips were coated with liquor for a moment before he licked them.
Calum turned around and asked us,
“I think we’re fine here, aren’t we?” He looked at me, seeking my approval.
“Uh-huh,” I replied, glad to be able to be alone with him.
His response to that was to pull me closer to him with one arm, which made me blush.
“Okay,” said Calum, who had clearly noticed what was going on.
“Don’t forget to use protection!” he added before running to the garage with the others.
“Calum!” Luke shouted at him, but without getting up.
I laughed nervously, covering my face with my hand.
“Sorry about that—he’s an idiot,” he said, laughing nervously.
”It’s okay—I mean, he’s an idiot, but I kind of like him.”
He leaned back against the couch.
“That wretch,” he added, pretending to be annoyed.
I was having more fun than ever.
I hadn't felt normal in so long that I had almost forgotten what it felt like.
I was always on the defensive, annoyed by something, that I had forgotten how to let my guard down and have fun with friends.
I let a few nervous giggles escape me until I looked away toward the door through which the boys had disappeared.
“Your friends are totally crazy,” I said between laughter.
“I know,” he said, rolling his eyes.
“But you’re definitely the worst.”
“Excuse me?” he asked, putting a hand to his chest and pretending to be hurt.
“Don’t even deny it—that was quite a scene with Mike.”
“I’m just keeping things interesting."
“Sure,” I said with a laugh. “You’re sick."
“I've been told,” he said, leaning his head back slightly against the armchair.
His Adam's apple exposed, I bit my lip in response.
I looked toward the doorway again.
Then my curiosity got the better of me.
I turned to meet Luke’s gaze; his smile faded slightly.
“Do what?” he asked, frowning.
“You know what I’m talking about, that whole thing with Michael.”
“It’s just a game,” he said, shifting his gaze.
“But you picked him for a reason,” I insisted.
“Are you jealous, Y/N?” he asked smoothly.
“No—I’m not—don’t change the subject,” I stumbled, blushing.
“I just did it to annoy him.”
“You know that doesn't make any sense, right?”
“Well, it doesn't have to.”
He was getting more serious, just like Michael had in the kitchen, and I didn't want to make him angry.
I was just really curious.
“Okay, then... what's with the ‘Wolfie’ thing?”
Luke's expression changed for a fraction of a second.
“It didn't seem like nothing.
“It's just—an inside joke.”
“Well, he didn't seem to find it funny. ”
“Well, that's cause he doesn't like it.”
“And why did you call him that?
“For that exact same reason.”
“That's what everyone says.”
“You used to be friends, didn't you?”
“Too many questions for one night.”
“Are you seriously going to leave me in doubt?
He stood up and brushed the dirt off the back pockets of his pants.
“C'mere, I want to show you something.”
“No, because you won't answer my questions.”
“I think I've answered enough so far.”
I looked at him with half-closed eyes and a raised eyebrow.
“Fine, but you owe me an answer.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever you say, pretty girl.”
“Do I have a new nickname already?”
“We’ll see how it suits you.”
I laughed and followed him.
He took my hand so we wouldn’t get lost in the crowd.
His hands were big and strong.
They didn’t hesitate to hold me tight, and I liked that. He made me feel safe.
We stopped in the main hallway.
“Wait,” I said, pulling his hand.
“Where are you taking me?” I asked curiously.
And he motioned for me to follow him.
“Are you going to kidnap me?”
“On what?” I asked, amused.
“On whether you behave yourself.”
I looked at him, confused.
“And what happens if I don’t?”
“You don’t want to find out.”
“Relax, I’m just taking you upstairs.”
“You’re not going to kidnap me?” I pointed at him with my index finger.
“You have a very dirty mind, Y/N...”
“What? — No, that’s not true.”
I pushed his shoulder lightly.
I followed him up the stairs, still holding hands.
We walked down a hallway, and Luke opened the door at the end.
As he opened it, the cool night air hit us in the face.
It was a spacious balcony overlooking the backyard patio, from which we could admire the forest and, beyond it, the vast ocean.
“Wow,” I said, taking in the beautiful view.
The moonlight illuminated our faces, making his skin glow, and his blue eyes locked into mine.
Luke leaned against the railing; his leather jacket opened slightly, revealing his half-buttoned shirt.
My mouth watered at the sight of his exposed collarbone.
He knew exactly what he was doing, and I hated how much I wanted him.
I approached him timidly.
He played with the silver piercing on the side of his lower lip, placing it between his teeth.
A smirk slowly appeared on his face.
His face was too beautiful to be real; I must have been dreaming.
All of this was just my imagination—I had never actually arrived at Castlewood, nor had I ever met him, nor was I here, standing right in front of him, with him looking at me like that—
Before I could let my imagination run wild any further, he took my hand again and invited me to come closer.
I held my breath; being so close to him was driving me crazy.
His pink lips were like an invitation I couldn’t refuse.
“What? What do you mean?”
“I’m not,” I said, looking away in embarrassment; my cheeks were burning like never before.
“You’re a terrible liar.”
Luke stepped closer, his eyes flicking down to my lips.
“You've been doing it all night.”
“Shut up,” I said, blushing even more.
I tried to pull away, but he just pulled me closer.
He laughed under his breath.
Before shyness could take hold of me, I leaned over him, grabbed him by the collar of his shirt, and pulled him just inches from my face.
His face, illuminated by the moon, glowed with an unnatural intensity, and a playful smile spread across his face.
He held his piercing between his teeth once more before I gave in and pressed my lips against his.
The feeling swept over both of us quickly.
The taste of liquor drifted from one mouth to the other.
His hands rested on my waist, pulling me closer.
I moved one of my hands to his curls, playfully.
His lips moved without hesitation; every movement was precise.
The heat inside me grew with every moment we kissed.
I’d never kissed anyone like that before; it was as if our mouths were connecting in a dance that no one had ever done before.
No one could make me feel the same way.
Maybe it was the alcohol, or because I hadn’t seen him in days, but I never wanted to be apart from him.
His hands roamed over my waist and lower back.
His lips teased me, caressed me, and claimed me as his own; at one point, I could almost feel him biting my lower lip and pulling on it slightly.
I returned the favor and felt a smile emerge within the kiss.
My hand in his hair moved to his neck, drawing him closer than I thought possible.
When we finally pulled apart to catch our breath, his eyes had become two black holes that sucked me in. I couldn't tear myself away from him; everything about him drew me toward him.
I could still feel the ghost of his smile against my lips.
We didn't say a word for an instant, consumed by the moment.
The music sounded much farther away than before.
I bit my lower lip to keep myself from smiling.
“Was that your attempt to shut me up?”
“Well, it worked, didn't it?”
“I'll have to try harder next time.”
“I'd like to see you try,” he said with a crooked smile, tilting his head slightly.
“Don’t tempt me,” I said playfully.
I stepped away from him to wander around the balcony, but he moved away from the railing, grabbed my wrist, and pulled me toward him.
His movement and grip were so strong that I almost stumbled, but he managed to catch me before I crashed into his chest.
“You have to be careful, beautiful.”
“And what do you know about that?”
“More than you think,” he said, leaning in to whisper in my ear.
His voice was like a caress, tempting, strong, possessive.
When I turned to look at him, he cupped my chin and leaned in to kiss me once more.
This time, it was much less hungry, gentler, but still just as intense, almost teasing.
Before pulling away, he bit my lower lip and tugged on it.
I loved it when he did that—it was a bit weird, but without a doubt, it was incredibly hot, just like the rest of him.
Luke pulled away, his crooked smile still lingering on his lips.
I didn't say anything, just stared at him like I'd loved to.
I hated how easily he could leave me speechless.
He looked deeply into my eyes for a moment longer, then turned his gaze toward the door through which we had entered.
“We should probably go back.”
I shook my head slightly, holding his hand—I didn’t want the moment to end just yet.
“If we stay any longer, we’ll have to prove Calum right.”
“Luke!” I tapped him lightly on the chest.
“Unless you want to prove him right.” I moved closer to him, cupping my face with one hand.
“You’re an idiot,” I said, laughing and pulling him toward the door.
“No, no, I think I want to stay now.”
“Um-mm, sorry, wasted opportunity.”
He said reluctantly once more and finally followed me down the stairs.
