Kiev was one of my main hangs when I was living in Alphabet City, back around a million and a half years ago (even before this photo was taken). It was open 24/7, had decent food which was cheap and you got big plates of it, which made it a great place for the young and broke. It was also a good place to go after seeing some music at CBGB or Max's Kansas City, both of which were maybe just a half mile or so away and an easy walk. I even saw Joey Ramone in their once! But back in those days, Alphabet City, which was decades away from being revived and gentrified, was really gnarly, filled with junkies and tough guys playing 3-Card Monty on the corners and kind of scary to walk through at 3 in the morning.
