seeing as today is 10K's 27th birthday, I wanted to share an exciting snippet of what I've been working on...I hope you enjoy!
“You can kiss me, if you want!” You clapped your hands over your mouth, but it was too late. You couldn’t take it back.
His head slowly shifted in your direction. The time it took for his eyes to meet yours felt like an eternity. As his gaze finally met your face, you noticed that he wasn’t looking into your eyes. Instead, he was looking at your mouth. Or, where your mouth would be, had your shaky hands not been covering it. Methodically and without words, he took your hands in his and removed them from your face. He continued to stare at your lips.
Your face was on fire at this point, and you could only hope that he didn’t notice. You steeled yourself in preparation for the inevitable rejection. You sat up straight, puffed out your chest with your chin high, and gave him a look of (somewhat false) confidence. You were not prepared for what he said next.
“Okay,” he whispered.
Your mouth fell open. “Okay?” you stuttered back, your hands—still in his—shaking. He nodded and, very suddenly, pulled you forward, and you fell onto his lap. He was stronger than he looked, and with some clumsy help on your end, he was able to manhandle you until you were straddling him. You lost all ability to breathe.
Then, without warning, you made the first move and crashed your lips onto his.
His lips were soft and full, just as you knew they would be. They fit perfectly around your own.
The kiss was hungry and full of want—on both your ends. His hands found themselves gripping your hips as your fingers trailed through his hair. His palms were rough and calloused as they kneaded the skin that slowly became exposed as your shirt began to ride up around your waist. You pulled lightly on his soft locks, and he moaned into your open mouth. You were inviting him inside.
As you deepened the kiss, his tongue flicked out and licked your lower lip. You allowed him entrance and noted that his mouth tasted like home.
Your lips danced to a rhythm that only the two of you knew. You hummed, in pleasure, along to the imagined beat. The vibration radiated through your mouth and into his, teasing his tongue behind his teeth. He pulled back, smiling against your lips, as he asked, “What was that?” You leaned in and pecked him once more before letting your eyelids flutter open.
“The music of our mouths,” you responded with a growing grin. He looked at you, puzzled but pleased, and locked his lips onto yours once more.
“You’re so weird,” he said in between kisses. You smiled softly against his lips, huffing out an exhale of a laugh through your nose. You were having trouble breathing, but you found yourself not caring.
This was your first kiss. You couldn’t believe it—how perfect it was. How perfect he was.

Summary: 10k gets shot in the chest during a shootout. You do what you can, but at a certain point, you both realize that there is no saving him this time.

This is Day 3 of my March of Pain writing challenge, where I post a whump piece inspired by a list of prompts every day.
Prompt: Bleeding Out
WC: 970 Words
He knew from the second the bullet tore through his abdomen that he was done for. He hadn't felt it right away. Had just been knocked back a step from the impact and instinctively pressed his palms to the spot where blood was quickly blooming against his shirt and stared at his bloodied hands with a furrowed brow.
His ears had started to ring once the pain registered. It was white hot and blinding, like someone had shoved a hot fire poker through his chest and held it there just to inflict the maximum amount of damage.
His legs came out from under him, his free hand scrambling for purchase against the bar stools behind him only to fall anyway, crumpling in a heap on the stained carpet.
The first lungful of air burned. He hadn't realized that he'd been holding his breath since he'd taken the hit, and breathing through it only seemed to make it worse. Each contraction of his diaphragm put a strain on the wound, drawing jagged gasps for air that hurt worse than a steady breath might have. It felt like he couldn't get a proper lung-full of air and it took him a second to realize that one must have collapsed.
He could hear you calling out to him, screaming your throat raw as you ducked for cover, too far away from him to help. Your voice was barely audible over the gunfire, muffled and choppy beneath the ringing.
His rifle had slipped out of his grasp almost immediately and he briefly wondered if he'd actually been holding it at all. It had felt like an extra limb since the dead had started to walk, constantly out in front of him, even when he was asleep some nights.
Things had been a little different since you'd come along. He'd swapped the rifle out to cradle you in his arms on cold nights and couldn't help but worry he'd never get to do it again.
There was little he could do but lie there and writhe in pain, hoping that nobody else had been hit.
When the gunfire stopped, for a second, all he could hear was his own ragged wheezing and he felt the panic surging through him.
You weren't screaming anymore.
He couldn't hear Doc, or Warren. Not Addy, or Murphy. No one.
The sound of your knees hitting the ground next to him was deafening, but filled him with relief no matter how surprised he was that you'd gotten so close without him noticing.
"No." You breathed, eyes darting from his chest, wide with panic. "No, no, no."
He could feel your hands replacing his over the bleeding wound and immediately gasped in pain.
"I'm sorry!" You sobbed like it was hurting you just as badly "Oh, god, Tommy. I'm so fucking sorry, but I've gotta do this. Don't move, baby."
You were trying desperately to apply pressure to the gaping wound in his chest with your hands, but they weren't big enough. Nothing was big enough. Even your coat, shrugged off in your haste did nothing but soak up the blood, drenched through in what felt like seconds.
He tried to say your name. To try and calm you down a little. Let you know it would be alright. But, all that spilled from his lips was a gurgling sound and a drop of blood. You weren't letting yourself look, too engrossed in trying to heal and fix, but his brow furrowed all the same.
Why couldn't he speak?
He was trying, with everything in him to get a word out, but it felt like he was choking.
"You can't die on me." you choked out, finally looking up at his blood-splattered face with hot tears rolling down your cheeks. "God, Tommy. You just can't."
He was so pale. His skin ashen and gray like he was already dead. Like he was hanging on by a thread, and shit, maybe he was.
"It's-" He managed to choke out, so soft and shaky that you almost couldn't hear it over your ragged breathing. "It's-Okay"
"It's not okay!" You shouted, "Nothing about this is okay!"
"I can't-" A sob wracked through your body hard enough that your knees would have buckled had you been standing. Instead, your shoulders slumped and you gave him a look so full of defeat and sadness that it seemed to have made him start crying too.
Tears cut through the semi-congealed blood painting his cheeks, carving a trail of misery through the gore.
He tried to reach for you, but his limbs felt heavy and not quite in his control.
That couldn't be a good sign.
You seemed to understand just from the way his fingers twitched through, because you grabbed his hand and held it both of yours, cradling it to your chest.
You seemed to have realized that holding pressure wouldn't help at this point. That all you could do for him was hold his hand and try to comfort him in his last moments.
His head was spinning, dizzy from the blood loss. His thoughts grew sluggish, like they were traveling through jello before they had the chance to become fully formed.
It was only getting harder to breathe.
"I love you." You breathed, looking down at him with a devastated look "Do you hear me? I love you so much that it hurts, Tommy."
He tried so hard to say it back, but all he could do was mouth the words.
"I'm gonna be okay."
It was a lie if he'd ever heard one. He wasn't sure that he'd ever hear you any more not-okay in all the time he'd known you. But it didn't matter. It still brought him some comfort.
Enough to rest his eyes for just a second.

background information:
raised under the relentless guidance of her grandmother (rosaline rotwood) after her parent’s premature deaths, vaedara was trained from early childhood to inherit a legendary psychic legacy. she craved rosaline’s validation, yet consistently fell short of her mentor’s impossible standards. it was less due to lack of power and more because of her emotional nature. her grandmother valued restraint and detachment while she embodied intuition and volatility. polar opposites.
after rosaline’s death, vaedara fell into a prolonged depressive state… abandoning psychic practice entirely. she had no one left in her family, all alone in the world. the last remaining rotwood. her suppressed abilities began to manifest as chaotic visions, fueled by grief and unresolved guilt. she was too young to process her parent’s deaths, but her grandmother pushed whatever grief she held to the edge. a little after this time, she attempted to redirect her energy into sewing and clothing design as it piqued her interest. initially as distraction, eventually as a new goal in life. though, it would never fill the void in her heart. she eventually came back around to continue her psychic / witchcraft work. deciding it would be beneficial to fully develop those skills before graduation.
vaedara did not get turned into a vampire until the age of 20 while locked up in willow hill psychiatric hospital. however, she ultimately returned to nevermore when she could. she needed to learn how to use her newfound powers by the vampire students as she had no one else to go to. the school was like a second home to her anyway. welcomed back with open arms due to her family ties.
side note: in the rotwood family, men take on the last name rather than the traditional way. they are were a very powerful matriarchal lineage.

crimson red hair in a wolfcut type hairstyle, hazel eyes, stands at 5’4 / 162cm, chubby body type, pale skin, visible eye bags, sharp eyebrows.
wears a smokey eye makeup look with a deep plum colored lipgloss daily. ears are double pierced along with a nose stud. nails are always painted black.
when not in uniform, she’s wearing any type of romantic goth style clothing. her favorites consist of lace and strictly red, purple or black colors. favorite shoes are heeled boots or any kind of chunky heel.

you can always find her offering to do free readings for homework help. though, she is highly skilled in casting spells and hexes as well as performing many types of rituals as well. such things come at a cost.
she cares more for fashion than actual education, doing what she can just to pass classes (except english, the only subject she enjoys).
her dream is to go to a fashion school in new york and become the greatest modern designer of gothic fashion, trying hard to ignore her outcast status. deep in her heart, she knows she’ll probably never escape the little town of jericho nor make it big due to the stigmas that surround her very being. let a girl dream.
personality:
vaedara is fierce, obsessive, a little overly confident and (lovingly) sarcastic once you get to know her, but a very quiet and shy girl during first interactions… usually. she just has to warm up to people, testing the waters to ensure people can handle her true nature.
if you bring up anything related to her interests or hobbies, you can immediately see the passion glinting in her eyes. warning: she will talk your ear off.
she is the most devoted and loyal friend you will ever have. once you’re claimed as ‘hers’, she will do anything to protect you and your happiness.
she often struggles with feelings of inadequacy rooted in her upbringing. her lack of family has left a hole in her soul, but no one would ever know. she’d rather put up a happy-go-lucky front than let anyone know the darkness that brewed within.
will absolutely use her vampiric charm to get what she wants. she’s quite a selfish person when it comes to certain things, but again.. no one really notices unless they really observe. her mask is hard to crack.
