My least favorite change from the whole show TBH (also its still kind of contradicted by something Jacob said about them hooking up for years and they develop feelings like....? They have feelings by episode 2, we know that, and they've only hooked up like 3 times by then in the show so they're not hooking up for years?)

The idea that they didn't hook up for TWO YEARS is madness. It makes no sense. (And as you say it does seem to contradict other statements by Jacob.)
It is more consistent with the book that they were hooking up in hotel rooms that whole time, because Shane was too paranoid to go to either of their houses. And Shane was too paranoid to have penetrative sex in a hotel room, so they didn't.
I saw another post where someone said "oh Shane didn't invite Ilya over until he bought the apartment next door and left it empty so no one could hear them." Now that makes sense to me and it restores the idea that Shane bought a building so they could fuck, which I love.

Yes, yes, yes, agreed. But the no hooking up for two years should have changed their whole dynamic. It did for episode two, but then everything went right back to the book. The Sochi conversation dialogue is very similar, but the emotional weight is very different. The book is all about Shane understanding what Ilya is going through and seeing through his asshole defense mechanisms. The show conversation ends with Shane being upset that Ilya is blowing him off. Vegas is way more emotionally charged as well. Shane is more upset in the bathroom and after penthouse sex. It all feels like Shane wants more, maybe even a relationship, and Ilya is the one pulling back. We donβt see Shane with any women besides Rose or get the LA blow job/ Mexico top conversation which establishes that they are on the same page about them being casual in the book. But the rest of the episodes pretty closely follow the book without addressing that shift in the dynamic.

the idea that thereβs no way to do fic/writing/fandom βwrongβ is just so ridiculous to me? like yes people can have opinions and they can write what they want, but that doesnβt mean they canβt be wrong, or that what they write is free from critique or being fucked up or problematic.
what people talk about and how they see/talk about it matters! how people write does matter! what they write matters! how they write characters matters! how they portray certain things matters! what tropes or cliches are used and how they are handled matters!
being creative is awesome and i encourage it in everyone but just because youβre being creative doesnβt mean you have some sort of get out of jail free card wrt being called out or people addressing the things you write and problems they may have with it. being creative also means growing and changing and part of that is realizing that what you write is not always done right, or well.
thiiiiiiiiiis! the βstop policing fandomβ crowd is so tedious because the point of media is exchange and critique. your meta/headcanon/fanfic is not superspecial rainbow-colored unicorn poop that just floats above the worries of mere mortals. there are real people reading your stories, real people affected by racism/sexism/other shit every. day. and i get that you want fandom to be your escapism, but they also want it to be theirs! they have just as much of a right to critically discuss your work as you do to write it. you arenβt obligated to change yourself in any way, but neither can you shut them up.
also, the problem most of the time is not with *one* particular fic or *one* particular author, but fandom as a whole. for example, that infamous sam is hydra post is would not have the impact it does if the treatment of poc in the mcu fandom (and every fucking fandom) wasnβt consistently disappointing. erasing rhodey, painting nick fury as some 2D villain, and the lack of ships involving poc period. why DO you have to throw sam wilson under the bus for the benefit of your ship (literally the most popular one in fandom) or the white male chara youβre stanning (literally the most popular one in the franchise)??? and thatβs the question iβm asking everybody

Folks talk like fandom is an inherently progressive space, but adult fan-media tends overwhelmingly to frame penetrative sex acts as humbling or degrading for the character on the receiving end, particularly if the act in question is even slightly non-vanilla.
