Out of all House of the dragon / Fire & Blood Characters who has the best writing?
Aegon, hands down, has the best writing. I’m a huge fan of Rhaenyra too I love her flaws and all but I hate how Hess and Condal try too hard to make her look like a saint when she was a human being.
Aegon II, to me, has some of the best character writing in both Fire & Blood and House of the Dragon. What makes him so compelling is how deeply relatable he is, especially through his reluctance to take on responsibility. In the later episodes of season one, we see that he doesn’t even want the throne in fact, he never did. His own words, “But she is the heir, not me. What of her?”, perfectly capture that resistance. That unwillingness to embrace duty, even when it’s being forced on him, reflects a very human side that’s easy to connect with.
Beyond his reluctance, Aegon isn’t just a one-dimensional villain. He’s complicated, flawed, and layered, constantly being pushed into a role he doesn’t want by figures like his mother and grandfather, which highlights how politics can consume even those unfit for power. In Fire & Blood, his character is especially fascinating because of the conflicting perspectives sometimes he comes across as a cruel usurper, other times a spoiled drunk, and at other times a man crushed by responsibility. This ambiguity makes him feel real. The show builds on that by giving him sarcasm, insecurity, and moments of surprising honesty, which make him unpredictable and deeply human.
Aegon also works as an effective foil to Rhaenyra. She’s ambitious, prepared, and determined, while he’s reckless, insecure, and unready. That sharp contrast elevates their conflict beyond simple “rightful heir vs. usurper” and instead turns it into a clash of flawed human beings. By the end, Aegon’s physical and emotional decline mirrors the downfall of House Targaryen itself, which ties his personal tragedy into the larger narrative of the Dance of the Dragons. It’s that balance his humanity, his flaws, and his symbolic role that makes his character writing stand out as some of the best in the series.
Also, it’s said that he’s around 18 or 19 years old in season two. He’s a teenager, already struggling internally while trying to balance many heavy burdens and growing up in a dysfunctional household similar to mine. I think that’s what makes me like Team Green too they’re all relatable in some way.
