Itās been months, a busy few months, that I have hardly done any work on it. The other day though, for the first time in seeming ages, I had nothing to do so worked on a novel. Relief. Tomorrow: back to drudgery!
New page up on the website - this one an overview of the in-world linguistics and philosophy of language in Tepat, and in Glindesa (another in-world culture I probably have not mentioned before). Some of the names are redacted / placeholders, otherwise it's fairly complete. So we get some interesting stuff about how language was regarded as sacred, and historical linguistic reconstruction began as a way to get to arrive at a Platonic ideal of language / the speech of the gods & produce effective magic.

Continuing on from last time. I already talked about assigning meanings and phonetic forms to pictographic signs, and then āborrowingā concrete signs to write abstract concepts. I want to touch on that for a second before moving on to how the parts work together, and then how to organize the whole mess of glyphs.
TLDR: Having made your glyphs, you need to figure out how to distinguish logograms, phonograms, and semantograms (or rather, their functions) and how they work together to spell things. Youāll have at least 200 signs. Create a master list of basic signs with a standard order. Group variant forms and derivatives under their radical. Create a phonetic index of your signs. Integrate these with your conlangās dictionary and crossreference extensively.
Combining signs
Since at this point we are still kind of playing, try combining things to see how they look. Combine some signs. They donāt need to be interlocked like Chinese, they be just written next to each other like hieroglyphs. Think about what a particular combination / sequence of signs might be read as. For example, the sign āwaterā next to āmanā might express a word related to both men and water, such as āswim.ā However, as weāve seen from the importance of phonetic clues in real logographic systems, itās more likely this means something like āwater-related word, that sounds like āman,āā or else āman-related word that sounds like āwater.āā What word might that be? It entirely depends on your conlang: no other language will have the exact same coincidences of sound as yours.
Marking the parts work together
So at the moment you will have writing which contains a mixture of signs, which are ambiguous. Before it was ambiguous what words were being written, if they sounded similar ā e.g., āIā or āeye.ā For that I suggested readding pictorial signs to distinguish meanings.
Incidentally, itās curiously similar to what a lot of SNS and smartphone users have done, with abbreviated spelling, and the plethora of emojis: reduce words to just an indication of their standard spelling, but with ample emoticons, often at the end, to clarify what theyāre talking about. If you think about it this way, itās not too hard to understand.
However, there is another possible ambiguity here. You now have some symbols which are meant to be read straight; some which are read phonetically, but meant to be interpreted as different (though similar-sounding word); and some signs which are really not read but meant to clarify semantically otherwise ambiguous ways of writing. These correspond to the three aspects of a logographic system I mentioned earlier:
(1) Logograms (logographs) ā signs that represent a word (or root) in the language
(2) Phonograms ā signs that indicate sounds
(3) Semantograms / Determinatives ā signs that mark a word as belonging to a semantic category
So here is the new question: which of these signs is which? How do I know, looking at a sign, if itās supposed to be a logogram, phonogram, or semantogram? You will have to decide how to do that.
One way is to have different sets of signs for the different functions: any particular sign is either a phonetic sign, a logogram, or a logograph. They may be overlapping somewhat, but to some degree, you might know that one sign is meant to be read phonetically because itās only ever a phonetic sign.
This can be seen with the interaction between kanji and kana in Japanese. Japanese is a very complex system, having taken Chinese characters (kanji) and added two phonetic syllabaries (kana) on top of it. Chinese characters themselves of course were already a logographic system, containing its own semantic and phonetic components from Old Chinese, but for a moment let us ignore that internal complexity. Kanji are logographs. The two kana syllabaries (hiragana and katakana) are visually distinct from kanji (and each other too). The same sign is either a kana or a kanji, not both. The kana are always used for phonetic spelling, kanji are not.* The general pattern is for kanji to spell content words (nouns, adjectives, and the roots of inflected verbs), while hiragana are used to phonetically spell function words and the inflectional endings of verbs, and katakana phonetically spell foreign non-Chinese words and are used for emphasis, similar to italic type in Roman letters. So if I see a kana ć I know it is always representing the syllable wa and does not represent a word. Conversely, a kanji like say čŖ represents a word/morpheme, meaning āself,ā which may be pronounced ji or mizukara depending on context, but is not representing just a sound. Furthermore, since Japanese doesnāt use spaces between words, the alternation between kanji and kana helps mark word boundaries.
(*I know that ateji exist, but thatās kind of a minor phenomenon and this is already complicated enough.)
However, from what I can tell, most systems do not separate each of those aspects completely, with totally unrelated sets of signs performing each function.
Another option: merging signs that function together into composite signs. In both Chinese and Maya, writing is organized into a series of square blocks. A single logograph can occupy a block by itself, or one or more basic signs can be combined inside it. When signs are combined, they are meant to be read together or associated in some way, by spelling out a new word which is different from the meanings of the basic signs, but somehow related to them.
So in Chinese, if a character has a radical, then it has been composed from at least two simpler signs. If it has been made of several signs, then you generally know that one sign in the block is suggesting the meaning of the overall character, and one sign is suggesting the sound. (Occasionally, the overall meaning may be a composite of the meanings of both components.)
In Chinese, being analytical, each block = one morpheme = one word in itself, generally. (This is true in Classical Chinese; in modern Mandarin most words are bimorphemic compounds and thus spelled with two characters, but ignore that for the moment.) Hence, the blocks themselves serve to distinguish word boundaries.
The organization of writing into blocks, and the structure of the blocks themselves, indicates the function of the signs, and their relationship to each other.
In Egyptian, hieroglyphic pictures can be used as phonetic signs, or semantic determinatives, but when they are used as logographs ā when they actually stand for the word for the thing depicted ā a small vertical stroke is written over the hieroglyph. (Two strokes mark the dual, and three make it plural.) Many people probably already know about cartouches in Egyptian hieroglyphs, which are kind of rounded enclosures marking proper names.
A possibility which I havenāt really seen, is the use of some sort of diacritics to distinguish functions. These might function similar to the Egyptian ālogogramā stroke, but probably be a much more developed system. As a possible example, an old non-canon form of Yuk Tepat glyphs briefly made use of the āairā sign. The representation of a puff of air, which stood for breath, which stood for speaking, was written over glyphs to indicate that they were simply meant āas spokenā ā i.e. for phonetic value alone.
Note, if you choose the Chinese / Maya route, your script will be massively more complex than say, classical Egyptian hieroglyphs with their relatively independent, unchanging forms, because you will need to have signs corresponding to combinations of signs. This is not so bad if youāre writing by hand but will become massively more difficult when you computerize. (My problem now.)
Iām sure you can think of other systems, and if you do, Iād like to see it.
Organizing: Basic signs
If you havenāt yet, make a complete list of all the basic signs you have created, which you will use. These are all the signs that cannot be broken down further into a simpler sign which means anything. As you develop each sign, write them down. This should be obvious, but keep track of them and write them in an ordered list.
So above is part of a 2-page list of basic signs in Yuk Tepat. I have not bothered to label most of them because after using them so much, I knew most of them already, at the point when I realized, āI really need a big at-a-glance list of these.ā I would recommend that you organize your official list at the beginning, and also label the signs.
You will also need to decidehowto organize them. Itās best to have some system for ordering them. In Chinese, the system is obvious ā ordering by stroke count. In Chinese, characters are composed of an easily identifiable number of discrete recognized strokes, which makes it easy to grade their complexity, and order them from simple to complex. (The same could be true of cuneiform, which has 5 distinct strokes that always occur in a definite number in a sign; however I do not know if cuneiform is in fact indexed this way.)
If you have ever used a Chinese character dictionary, you probably understand the principle. Looking up a character in a dictionary involves identifying the parts the character can be broken into, identifying which one is the radical (usually = the semantic determiner), then finding it in the list, then looking up that radical, which will give you all the characters derived from it, then finding it in that list. Taking again ę³³, if you donāt know it, but recognize the three dots on the left side as āwater,ā you can look up the āwaterā radical. The water radical will be with all the other 3-stroke radicals. ę³³ will be listed under that, with all other characters derived from the water radical. Chinese characters are ordered by the number of strokes. The total number of strokes in the character is 9, so you will find it after water-based characters with 8 strokes, and before water-based characters with 10 strokes.
In Tepat, which otherwise functions similarly to Chinese, characters are not composed of discrete strokes, but usually of one long connected stroke which bends, loops, doubles back, etc. While itās still possible to grade complexity, and Iāve tried, itās not as simple and obvious as Chinese, and not as useful.
Given that though, some other system, even an arbitrary one, is still better than none. Heck, you can just number them in the order you made them if desired.
What I did with Yuk Tepat was to sort the basic glyphs by dividing them into semantic categories, starting with humans and ending with āabstractā glyphs, with things such as body parts, animals, plants, nature, tools in between. Interestingly, this turned out to be almost the exact same system Gardiner imposed on Egyptian, so I feel vindicated in it. Within each category, the glyphs have a standard order ā essentially arbitrary, but often with some justification like top-to-bottom (e.g., āBody Partsā start with the head, āNatureā runs from the vault of the sky to water, which settles below ground level.)
This is not as simple a rule as stroke order, but it does serve the necessary task of sorting your glyphs, because you will probably have at least 200 signs, and you do not want to spend time searching a jumble of 200 signs for the one you need.
Alternatively, you can order all of the signs by the Roman-letter transliteration of that signās reading (more in a second about phonetic organization). You can change the order later, but please give them a standard order.
The Detailed List
I think itās useful to have a single-page ordered view of the signs, but you should also created a longer, more detailed index of them all. Be prepare to leave space beside each one on your list, to create subentries.
Give each sign a heading. Then create subheadings: the subheadings, under each sign, are to keep track of the derivatives of each sign, and composite signs made up of it.
You can of course list derivative signs at the end, after basic ones, but for later ease I suggest grouping secondary signs with the primary signs they are derived from.
One more subheading: a list of variant signs / alternate forms of each sign. If like Chinese or Maya, where your signs will be crammed into one block, the shapes of the parts of that block will be squished and stretched to fit around each other, leading to distinct variants of each sign. They may also be abbreviated, or further simplified. Keep track of these. Generally these will tend to fall into certain patterns across signs, e.g., a form when the sign occurs on the left side of a composite character, or on the top. If you want to subclassify these variants by their kind of positional occurrence inside a compound, you can do this as well.
So start filling out your expanded sign list. Whenever you make a new sign, add it. Whenever you make a new sign by modifying a sign, or combining signs, add that one under the basic sign itās composed of ā its radical. You can follow the practice of using the semantic component as the radical ā however, even if you privilege one component as the radical, if you are creating a sign composed of two basic signs, I would recommend listing it under both components, and cross-referencing them.
As an example, here is a page with the glyph yan āpersonā and some associated signs. This is kind of a sloppy layout but shows the different kinds of information to keep linked to each of the glyphs you might make.
So going row by row what you see here is:

A composite glyph for āpeople/nationā which is itself a semantic determiner in other glyphs.
So of these, I think the information in #2 and #3 is the most important and should be catalogued in whatever entry you make for your basic glyph: the glyph itself, variant/combining forms, modified/derived glyphs, any compound glyphs using it as a radical. The historical forms are probably of interest too, but not directly useful in organizing stuff.
Organizing sounds
Itās important to keep your signs phonetically organized somehow, to keep track of how each of the basic glyphs sound ā and thus, how they can be used as phonetics to spell other words. So create some sort of index of phonetic elements in an orderly fashion ā most likely you will get some sort of chart. Here is a section of a chart I used to organized Tepatic glyphs phonetically:
While this here is kind of old (I should redo it), you get an idea. Along the top, we have classes of initial consonants (e.g. P = labial stops). Along the side, we have a list of different kinds of ārhymesā (vowel + final consonant). So the top second-left square shows a glyph (NOSE), and we can tell from this it starts with a labial consonant and ends in -im. This is pim and could also be used for phim, plim, pwim, etc. So if I invent phim (not yet), I already know that I can spell it by combining the phonetic pim ānoseā with whatever semantic radical is most appropriate to the meaning.
This includes not just basic glyphs, but any glyphs derived from them, or compound glyphs. If they have a unique sound and can be used to represent the sound, they go in the chart.
In my chart, there are also some arrows. Since there are not glyphs that fill out absolutely every space, some syllables have to be āspelledā with other similar-ish syllables. For example, in the bottom right ā HEW lets me know that there is no sign with a pronunciation that fits the chart syllable pattern no onset + /iw/, so if thereās a word like hiw, it should borrow the phonetic for hew, which is āclose enough.ā
Yuk Tepat is most similar to Chinese, in that it uses a fuzzy kind of āoverall resemblanceā for the whole syllable to choose phonetic elements ā instead of some strict rule like matching a particular part of the sound. Hence, the design of the phonetic organization system is similar to the Chinese Fanqie system, where each characterās pronunciation is divided into an onset and rhyme.
Your own system will depend on your languageās phonology and the kind of spelling system you want in your language ā syllabic, alphabetic, etc. For Egyptian, Egyptian phonetic elements are first organized into uniliterals (signs representing a single consonant), biliterals (signs representing a sequence of two consonants), and triliterals (representing 3 consonants, disregarding any vowels that may come between them). As befits an Afroasiatic language, the uniliterals are usually presented in an alphabetic order parallel to the order of Hebrew and Arabic. You can always change your system. The important thing is, set up a system for organizing your signs phonologically now.
Whenever you create a new sign, and assign a reading to it, write it in the appropriate place in your chart right away. This serves two purposes: first, it helps you easily locate signs by their sound, so you can easily pick signs to write phonetically similar words / phrases. Second, it gives a direction to further work. You know where the gaps in your chart are and you know what kind of words you should make up to fill it out, until everything in your language can be spelled phonetically.
Organizing the dictionary
Finally, keep the meanings organized as well in your dictionary. Iām not going to ask you if you are making a dictionary of some sort for your conlang, because Iām going to assume you are, because you should. Some people just use an Excel spreadsheet, some people use dedicated dictionary software. My examples will mostly deal with Lexique Pro, which I primarily use.
While a dictionary is mainly for describing spoken language, and your dictionary is probably going to be in Romanization rather than your script, itās important to integrate your logographs with your dictionary.
I insert logographic signs into the dictionary as picture. Having written all your basic signs, scan (if on paper) and create a separate small image file for each one. Name it and put them all in one folder. While making your dictionary, whenever you input the word / root corresponding to one of your basic signs, add the image to your dictionary entry.
You can add as many images to as many entries if you want, but at the very least I would recommend that your basic signs / radicals should be in your dictionary, which I have done.
If your writing system makes use of composite glyph blocks, like Chinese or Maya, but you do not want to write, scan, and import an image for every single one, an easy workaround is to make use of the \nt field (Note). This simply allows you to add a freeform text information in your entry. For entrywords that would be spelled with a composite glyph, I add a note near the top that just says something like āSemantic radical khlĆ»t MOUSE + phonetic pim NOSE.ā (This is a completely made up example.) This tells me that it is made up of two basic glyphs, āmouseā and ānose.ā So I know exactly how to spell it, even without an image of its glyph. If I have for some reason forgotten those two radicals, as basic glyphs I would have inserted at least their images into the dictionary. So I can say look up āmouseā and it shows me the entry with my image of that glyph.
Now crossreference everything every way you can.
Lexique Pro allows a variety of fields for indicating semantic relations among different entries, which I had not given much thought to before, and only came to think about these semantic connections a lot after starting Lexique Pro ā really, I discovered it through Lexique Pro.
The most important are the ones tagged \lf (Lexical Function) and \sd (Semantic Domain). Lexical function creates a link to another entry with a specified relationship to the word, which you can label ā for example, indicating synonyms, antonyms, hyponyms, and hypernyms. Semantic domain assigns your entry to one (or more!) categories / wordlists of entries with something in common ā for example, all animal words, all plant words, color words, etc.
Whatās great is theyāre so flexible and I have tweaked them to help me organize so much more. For example, semantic domains can create custom domains. For Swira, who are nomadic herders, I created custom semantic domains for horse- and archery-related words. But you can use them to organize information thatās not even semantic. In the context of Yuk Tepat and its logographic script, what I did is to create a custom semantic domain for basic glyphs, then tag the names corresponding to every basic glyph in my logographic system. When I click on that semantic domain, it shows me an alphabetized list of every basic glyph.
I similarly created a āsemanticā domain to list all of the signs and composite signs in the phonetic chart listed previously.
āLexical functionā can also be flexibly used for non-semantic crossreferencing. For example, I can insert a lexical function, label it āUsed as a radical,ā and write in it all the other composite glyphs formed using it as a radical. Similarly, I can create another lexical function field and put in all the modified glyphs derived from it. (This is unique to Tepatic glyphs, but there are a small number of marks which can be added to basic glyphs to create new glyphs ā e.g., forming a glyph for āfingerā from the glyph āhand.ā These are not properly composite glyphs, because they are not made of multiple base glyphs. Anyway, you get the idea.)
Lexique Pro unfortunately does not automatically create backlinks, or update links, so you should visit the entry pages for each of the derived glyphs and create backlinks to their radical. Time-consuming, but I think in the long run better for keeping your dictionary organized.
If you think that this could replace the paper charts I showed in the first part of this post, yeah I guess it could, but Iām too analog to not keep a handy paper chart lying around. I am not perpetually online. If youāre even more analog than me though, you could use index cards for everything. Either way, take care organizing all your glyphs! You will have an unwieldy number of them very soon.
Conclusion
I believe this series of posts covers most of the basics of how logographic scripts work, how they can be developed, and how they can be organized. I hope that was helpful. If any of the points I made were unclear, please ask again. Sorry this took such a long time to finish. Thank you for asking the question though. In the previous post I mostly just described the generalities of how logographs work. Here, Iād like get more practical by laying out a plan for applying this to a conlang writing system.
TLDR: Making a sign by combining two signs which both suggest the meaning is a possibility, but actually much less common than combining signs where at least one sign suggests the sound. In developing your own language and script, it helps to distinguish visualizable and non-visualizable concepts. Give the non-visualizable concepts names similar to the visualizable ones, then reuse pictures of the visualizable words to spell similar-sounding abstract concepts.
Ideogrammatic compounds
Before that though, Iād like to comment on one more thing which should have been in the last post, ideogrammic compounds. Previously I discussed how words are spelled out using multiple signs, some of which suggest the meaning of the word and some suggest the sound. I gave an example of the Chinese characters ę°“, ę°ø, and ę³³. ę³³ yong āswimā is composed of different parts. The three dots on the left side are a variant of ę°“ and indicate the meaning has something to do with water. The rest of the character is the same as ę°ø yong āeternalā and indicates that it is pronounced the same way, hence it is dependent on the spoken Chinese language. (Contemporarily, it is; the twist, as we saw before, is that ę°ø is the original character for āswim,ā which was then borrowed to write āforeverā as well, because they sound the same.) This kind of sound-meaning combination is the phonetic-semantic character.
There is another possible way to use characters in combination. It is possible to combine two basic signs into a compound character where each of the components relate to the whole meaning in some way. This is called an ideogrammatic compound (or compound ideograph ā there is a lot of variety in terminology, sorry).ę°ø in its original meaning is an example of this; it was probably an image of a person in water, hence āswim.ā
For many people, this seems the intuitive way to form logographs for more complex ideas that donāt have their own basic signs. If they are making a logographic writing system, they may think this is how they need to figure out how to write all the words in their language. The thing is, while these kinds of characters exist, they are much less common than combinations that combine meaning and sound. As a matter of fact, in Chinese something like 90% of all characters are phonetic-semantic compound characters. They absolutely swamp all the other kinds of characters combined. So realistically, your system should make a very big place for this kind of spelling.
Planning
Anyway, moving on.
What follows is some advice about making your system. Note, a lot of this is not how I made my logographs. A lot of this is what I figured out haphazardly while working inefficiently, and looking back, how I think I would make another script. Consider this partially tested.
I would like to start by talking about visualizable and non-visualizable concepts, and then walk through several exercises in making them into stuff you can write with, and turn to several ways of organizing logographs ā because logographic systems have many, many more signs than purely phonetic ones, and this both makes them more difficult to organize, but also makes organizing them much more important.
For a moment, I would like to get some obvious stuff out of the way. What material do people write on? What do they write with? What direction do they write? Are their signs all the same size or not? This is stuff for any writing system, and they matter to logographs too.
Letās start by drawing some pictures and thinking about visualizable concepts and non-visualizable ones.
You donāt necessarily have to start with pictures, but it can be helpful. Remember that you donāt have to draw well, in fact, drawing very badly can result in nice shapes that arenāt too figurative. Remember, also, that cultures may not necessarily visualize the same object in the same way.
So, try drawing some stuff. Try to draw very simple, recognizable stuff. Think about what the picture means / represents. You can keep drawing if you want, over and over until the pictures stop looking like pictures and just look like strokes.
Start your wordlist: Visualizable and non-visualizable
Iād like to ask you to make up a list of all the concepts you want to put into words ā something you probably do anyway as you make your language. There is a whole separate discussion to be had about āWhat words do I needā ā I wonāt go into that here. For now, weāll assume that you have a word / idea list and your list is sufficient, at least to start with. You can always add to your list.
I would like you to try practicing dividing these words / concepts into āvisualizableā and ānon-visualizableā categories. Visualizable includes anything that can be represented by an image. This might include things like ātree,ā ārock,ā āsun,ā ābaby,ā whatever. If you want to be a bit more detailed, you can distinguish things that can be represented by a straightforward picture of the thing itself, and things that can be represented iconically, things like āupā or ādown.ā Non-visualizable includes abstract things such as ābe,ā āyou,ā etc. that you canāt just draw. This would include plenty of verbs, abstract nouns, probably all of your grammatical words / morphemes. It might include some theoretically visualizable ideas, such as colors ā assuming coloration isnāt an inherent part of your writing system. These are words you canāt just draw, but you need to figure out some way to represent.
Matching the elements
Assuming you have a list, youāve started making up words, and drawn some pictures, now try assigning words and pictures to each other.
First, match your crude pictures to your visualizable concepts ā e.g., if āsunā is on your list of essential words and you have a picture of a sun, they go together.
For the next quasi-exercise in logographic script making, I would like you to assign phonetic forms you have made up in your conlang to the concepts on your list, but only to the āvisualizableā concepts we just discussed. Your job right now is to pair up the three items (1) a wordform in your language, (2) a meaning, (3) an image or icon of #2, which will become part of your writing system.
At this point, I would recommend that you spread your words out as much as possible over your phonological space. So choose forms that are fairly distinct from each other as much as possible, not too close, but that cover a lot of ground. You should ideally have words that include most consonants in your language, and every vowel, and as many combinations of them as possible ā unless of course you decide that youāre going to ignore certain distinctions. For example, voicing ā it is entirely possible that you may decide that your writing system will simply not regularly distinguish consonants that differ only in voicing. Egyptian tends to be strict about consonants, but ignore vowels completely. Logographic systems do have phonetic parts, but they also tend to be fuzzier than non-logographic systems ā indeed thatās why they include semantic elements, to distinguish words that are otherwise similar.
So far, this accords with what we might call ābest practicesā in conlanging, insofar as there is such a thing: most people would probably recommend you use all your sounds, and different combinations and syllable types, and not make all your words sound the same.
Step 2 is going to be assigning phonetic forms to the non-visualizable concepts, but in this case, I want you to give them forms that are similar or even the same as the visualizable concepts. How exactly you interpret āsimilarā depends on you and your language. You could use a strict syllable correspondence, where the first consonant-vowel in the words is the same. You may choose to match the consonants but ignore the vowels. Or you may work on vibes and just match words with a āclose enoughā āfamily-resemblance typeā similarity ā such as Chinese, where phonetics tend to match an entire syllable but hand-wave away lots of fine phonetic distinctions.
This IS a break from the typical ābest practices.ā Not that this is bad advice, but logographs change the calculation. When it comes to logographs, it will be an advantage to have homophones. This is more of an aesthetic rule than a structural one, for the same reason that a book probably wonāt give two major characters both the name āJimā unless there is a specific good reason to have characters with the same name. Here, we have a good reason to have two Jims.
If you remember the first post, talking about the rebus principle, you may guess why: images of visualizable concepts can be used to write abstract concepts that cannot be visualized easily. What you want to do here is to create pathways by which a picture can be borrowed to write an abstract concept. And it will depend entirely on your language. You are finding your own languageās equivalent to āeye = I.ā
Semantic elements
The final step of this stage is to completely borrow over the images of various visualizable concepts to spell the nonvisualizable concepts.
Having completed this step, you can write stuff, but with a lot of ambiguity. Obviously, itās now hard to tell if, say, an image of an eye means āIā or āeye.ā
The next stage is to clarify this ambiguity by reinserting a semantic element that you partially removed by borrowing images to write words they donāt literally represent. Here, start adding back in images, signs, marks of some kind, to distinguish different words that might be written the same. You may bring in any unused pictures you made at the very beginning to use, or variants of those. Or you might decide that some of the pictures you have that have been borrowed to spell phonetically by the rebus principle will be reserved completely for phonetic spelling. What you are starting to do here is create semantic determinatives like the radicals of Chinese characters.
Note that typically, the abstract concepts now written with images of other things will get to keep those images they captured. They own them completely. More likely, additional elements will be added to words that originally matched the image. So in a hypothetical English example, a sign that was a picture of a bee, which was used to write the word ābee,ā would begin to be used to write the verb ābe.ā Beyond that, it is more likely that the bee image will become mainly a sign of the copula, and that a new sign will be created, or a new addition made to that sign to indicate that, yes, the bee-image now in fact does mean ābeeā here. This is evident in my perennial example, ę³³ ā the original glyph ę°ø switched over entirely to the abstract meaning āeternalā and a new glyph for āswimā was created by adding figurative water drops to it.

This is going to be broken up because itās so long. Iāll talk about my conlang Yuk-Tepat & its logographs (Tepatic glyphs) but also the real-world logographic writing systems. Iāll get into some specific advice later. Of course, if you (readers) have logographic scripts please add on whatever you can about how yours work & how you made it, in order to make this more comprehensive. Or if you just have something to add / correct.

Logographic systems work quite a bit differently from most āphoneticā writing systems. Your inventory of signs will be much larger than other systems. Think a couple of hundred. Tepatic glyphs ended up with about 200 distinct signs, which is appoximately the number of Chinese radicals.
However, it also works similarly to āphoneticā systems, or more similarly than you might expect. Some of the stuff you need to do will be the same as for any writing system / conlang - for example, consider the writing medium (paper, stone etc.) and tools (brush, etc.) and how they affect your system. Also, know your conlangās phonology and basic grammatical structure ā logographic or not, this will be important (as youāll see).
First, I would like to talk about what logographs are, and how they work. Since you, Anon, asked the question, Iām guessing you might already know what logographs are, hence you are asking, but in case you donāt, I want to go into what logographs are, because I think many people donāt quite get what they are, and unless they are Chinese (or Japanese), donāt know how they work, and this is going to cause problems in making the script work if they try to make logographs for a conlang. In case you already understand logographs well (or youāre Chinese) you can skip over what Iām writing. Or read it anyway, if you want to hear about how other systems work. I advise you reading up a lot about how other systems work.
Earth has at least four families of logographic writing systems: Egyptian hieroglyphs, Sumerian cuneiform, Chinese characters, and Maya glyphs. Theyāre all very different, but have some similar principles, and one of them is they have a phonetic component, just like any other script. Also, logographs (also called logograms) are not ideographs or pictographs (āpicture writingā).
Many people think that hieroglyphs or Chinese somehow represent thoughts directly through some kind of picture, bypassing āwordsā and spoken language, but they donāt. This is no doubt exacerbated by the fact most hieroglyphs undeniably LOOK like āthings.ā So itās natural to think that an obvious picture of an owl must represent the idea of an owl, but often it doesnāt. Confusion about this will make you not get how to make your system work especially when expressing something abstract that you canāt draw. Logographic systems are intimately tied to the languages they are used to write. Hence, yours will be tied to your conlang. You should already have a good idea of your conlang. It doesnāt need to be complete (when are they ever?) but you should know the phonology, and some other parts of the grammar may be helpful (is it very inflectional, word order, etc.)
Logographic systems contain signs that can represent whole words (or roots), which may or may not be recognizable āpictures.ā They also have phonetic elements (which may also look like pictures). The way the phonetic elements develop is usually by what we call the rebus principle, which means a sign is borrowed to write something else which sounds similar.
Iād like to illustrate this with an example. I wrote the following English sentence in pictures:
If youāre having trouble, try saying the name of each thing depicted. You should get:
eye can knot bear two leaf ewe.
Now try saying it faster and see if you get it.
What Iām trying to say is, āI can not bear to leave you.ā
This is something I still didnāt quite get when I started working on Yuk Tepat.
You will note, that none of these little pictures are actually pictures of the concept referred to by the word they are used to spell. They are pictures of the thing whose word sounds like the word for the thing you want to represent, but canāt easily, so you get at it by using something that sounds similarly. (I know that sentence is hard to parse, please read it again.) This example only works because āIā and āeyeā sound the same in English.
Now, imagine for a minute that English-speaking America is pretty much the same as in our world but English is written logographically. Nuclear war or something happens and the country gets buried under mounds of ash and dust and dug up hundreds of years later by archaeologists for some human civilization from elsewhere, unrelated to America, and their texts are deciphered. In this future civilizationās version of Youtube, people start making videos explaining their mysterious, cool writing system.
āThe ancient American sages represented the word for oneself, I, as a picture of an eye. And if you think about it, the self is a perceiving self; without a subject able to look around and observe an outside, objective world, there is no self, no āI.ā The self begins with a perception of the world. This is the profound and mystical wisdom of the long-lost ancient civilization of The United States of America. Every letter hides a profound truth about the world.ā
The simple, possibly boring explanation is just that āIā and āeyeā sound the same in English, so they could be written the same way. But laugh as you might, there are tons of people online (invariably non-Chinese) making similar fluff about Chinese characters. Beware.
People may think to write ābeā logographically you have to think up some cool symbol of the concept of ābeingā but the likely solution for an English logography would simply be to draw a bee (the insect that makes honey) and have it represents the copula.
I think what a lot of people donāt realize is that it is very common (even usual?) for the word the sign is borrowed for to completely take over that sign, and that a semantic indicator will be added to indicate the ORIGINAL meaning of that sign, or a new character created for it. The sign will completely shift over; it is no longer a picture-drawing of its meaning, even in a highly stylized way.
The typical development often goes:
- A picture is drawn to represent the word for the same thing that the picture represents. This is still pre-writing; you cannot draw a picture of everything you might want to talk about.
- The picture is borrowed to write another word or syllable in the language which cannot be depicted, but which sounds like the word. This is going to be different for each language because each language has different words and different words will be homonyms; hence you cannot separate a logographic script from the spoken language it was made for.
- Some of these signs develop into phonetic signs.
- The system reintroduces āpicturesā (or their relics) to clarify the meaning of words which might phonetically be spelled similarly.
This has happened many times in Chinese characters. It is probably the main way Chinese abstract, grammatical words get characters. The character ę°“ is āwater,ā from an image of 3 parallel water flows. ę°ø, representing probably a person floating on water, meant āswimā (Old Chinese *ɢʷraÅs). This was then used to write the similar-sounding *ɢʷraÅŹ āforever,ā an idea which is hard to depict visually, donāt you think? āForeverā completely took over ę°ø. Then when they wanted to actually depict āswim,ā they added three water dots (itself ultimately a form of ę°“) to the left side to make a new character ę³³. This is essentially āthat ɢʷraÅ-ish sounding word that has to do with water.ā
Signs like the three dots are called a radical in Chinese, and the remainder is called the phonetic. Some radicals are extremely common and form a great classificatory system, marking characters containing them as glyphs referring to words for people, animals, birds, plants, liquids, earth, etc. The vast majority of Chinese characters are of this type: composite characters made up of a part indicating roughly the sound, and a part assigning the meaning to some semantic domain.
Similar signs to radicals are found in hieroglyphs and cuneiform, the main difference being that they are called determinatives and they are still written as separate signs rather than being compressed into a single character like Chinese.
(I will note, radicals are basically a lexicographic tool for indexing characters, and not an etymological classification. But the radical usual corresponds to the semantic component of a character.)
If you understand this, you understand one of the key principles behind logographic writing and are ready to proceed.
So, logographic scripts generally have three components:
(1) Logograms (logographs) ā signs that represent a word (or root) in the language
(2) Phonograms ā signs that indicate sounds
(3) Semantograms / Determinatives ā signs that mark
The way this works out in particular scripts varies. Not all of them will have all of the parts. I think Maya doesnāt really have a system of semantic determiners. And it may very well be that these may be functions and a language may use the same sign in each of these functions ā but perhaps with a system for indicating when it is working as a logogram, a phonogram, or a taxogram. In Chinese and Maya, signs are generally compressed into a āblockā to indicate they are functioning together ā as we saw in the Chinese example. In Egyptian, a particular sign may perform any of the functions, but when it is used as a logogram, a small vertical mark is added to it to indicate it is a logogram.
Systems can get vastly more complex: Old Persian or Japanese. Japanese is probably the most complicated writing system ever ā certainly the most complicated in use now. But I will set that aside, and notably both of those systems are the result of existing logographic systems being repurposed to suit completely unrelated languages.
You can tweak this overall system a bit. In Yuk Tepat, I have incorporated a class of marks I have variously called āoperatorsā or āmodifiers,ā which are attached to and modify the meanings of logograms. For example, adding various different marks to the sign āhandā forms signs for finger, knuckle, thumb, palm, have, lack, etc. You see this sporadically in Chinese, for example the characters å āknifeā and å āblade,ā or ęØ ātree,ā ę« ābranch,ā and ę¬ āroot.ā In Chinese though, this is a sporadic thing, while in Yuk Tepat this kind of marking is very systematized.
Since logographic systems are still at least partly phonetic, the phonetic / phonemic part can be classified by the different ways it works, same as phonemic writing systems. Hence, you can have logo-alphabets, logoabugidas, and logosyllabaries. Egyptian hieroglyphs are logoconsonantal (an abjad). The other systems are syllabic. While I donāt know any logoabugidas, you can always make one. Think about which one suits your language. Egyptian, e.g., is logoconsonantal probably because itās Afroasiatic and abjads seem well-suited to their style of consonantal roots. The only difference between these and fully phonetic writing systems is that the phonetic part of logographic systems usually has much less phonetic precision, hence why semantic signs are needed to disambiguate similar-sounding words.
Your system doesnāt have to work just like any of these. You can figure out your own type, although it will likely mix logograms, phonograms, and taxograms in some form. Iāll grant that, of course, you donāt have to do even that. If you want something ideographic, you can try to make it. People constantly imagine fantasy languages that work completely differently from any real language, and thatās their prerogative. But if by ālogographic,ā you meant a system like Egyptian/Sumerian/Chinese/Maya then it will be somewhat like I describe.
So to wrap up, logographs =/= pictures, they donāt represent translinguistic āideas,ā they have a phonetic component that reflects the spoken language, and use semantic signs to disambiguate words. Once you know this, you basically understand the mechanics of logographs.

It feels comfortably familiar to be back on āGeocitiesā - but better, from what Iāve seen. There are a few conlang sites, and for all the advantages of SSNs, itās nice to visit a page & see someoneās entire grammar just there, instead of M&M-sized pieces of it. And no more ads!

I have been avoiding working on the story of Qom while / by organizing the lexicon (reorganizing, really) of Classical Swira ⦠and not finishing that, either. While that goes on, it seems that it doesnāt matter that I prune every single protolanguage etymon that I no longer use, and that is a waste of time for now, at least. So Iām focusing on cleaning up particular semantic domains. This time, itās the kinship terms.
(Of course, having done so, mewling central beat me to it & made a prettier chart.)
You may remember from a while ago, the kinship terms for the protolanguage.
Swira terms are mostly an update of this. This gives us:
In the traditional anthropological six-type typology of kinship systems, it seems to be somewhere between āInuitā (because it doesnāt distinguish cousins much) and Sudanese (because it does distinguish different types of uncles). In addition, it distinguishes relative age within generations ā both egoās generation and the parents.
Many kinship systems will merge particular relationships in one term. I considered giving Swira a different set of kinship term mergers ā all relatives of oneās own and oneās parentās generation are referred to by the same term IF they are younger than the parent but older than you. Additionally, all people in egoās generation, younger than ego, are āyounger siblingā regardless of whether theyāre a biological sibling or cousin. (I donāt know if any earthly society does so, but why not? It does at least fit one rule of kinship which I do observe, which is that more distinctions are made in older ages / generations than younger ones. However, I did not do this for the chart.)
Many of these have multiple forms. I have shown one form, the āfreeā form, which is unbound, usually used in a direct address, sometimes in place of a name ā and in some cases is found as a generic noun, for example, lara is also a typical word for just āold man.ā It is common to extend kinship terms to some people to whom one is not really related. For example, it is polite to address strange old men and women as āgrandfather / grandmother,ā and the terms without a personal prefix generally mean just āold man / old woman.āThese words also have conjugated forms with a personal possessive prefix, which form may differ from the unbound form. For example, muku has the bound form just -mu as in kŹ·emu āmy son.ā
One thing I wanted to do is to have terms resemble each other in a āfamily-resemblanceā way that is not entirely regular. Many of the words have broad regularities going back to the protolanguage, but altered by sound changes ā visible in the o- on parternal relatives and the na- on maternal ones. That said, having all the words be etymologically / morphologically-derived / related isnāt super real. One thing I thing Iāve noticed while looking at kinship terms, is that (like names for sexes and ages of animals), when a language distinguishes numerous different words for different relationships, theyāre often different roots, rather than transparently derived from some kind of āmotherās sideā / āfatherās sideā / āin-lawā prefix as seen here. But I kind of like it, and donāt see any reason why it CANāT be.
Another thing: cousins can be referred to as brothers or sisters, but also with the descriptor iksi. Iksi has not changed, but the etymology has. In the protolanguage kinship post, iksi simply is, it doesn't have any morphological complexity. However, I realized it could also be evolution of *isĒkĒg, and thus could be derived from *isa 'blood.' In that case it should refer to paternal (blood) cousins, but I figure it has extended to all cousins.
QƓntoq is one of the more amusing errors of Tepatic history.
Among the barbarians of the north, people commonly called themselves āthe peopleā or āour peopleā or āreal peopleā or something like that. What do they call people outside the tribe? Often just āthose other peopleā or āstrangers.ā Since most are Nastowic languages, they tend to resemble each other. In Proto-Nastowic, the root *qigÉÆ for āother, the other, another, something else (not the self).ā With *tab āpeopleā (redundant plural: *tabud) you get *qigÉÆ(n)tab(ud).
There are a variety of derivates, derived from this, ranging from qeyuntawoŹ to qeintawiŹ to qe:nto:Ź to keyundau etc. - but as you can see, there is a certain resemblance among all of them.
When Tepat had relations with neighboring barbarians, they when they encountered new tribes, or merely heard about the existence of ones further out, they would often ask the adjacent tribes with which they had more contact āWho are they?ā And the near tribes would just say, āTheyāre other people.ā At least once the answer must have been something like *qeyuntoŹ, which Yuk Tepat borrowed to refer to the still unmet QĆ“yĆ»ntoq tribe.
Tribal and national boundaries were long in a flux; some nomads would displace others, and Tepat would encounter them, and hear about still more tribes out there, and so the aforementioned conversation would repeat itself many times. Another time the answer was *qe:nto:Ź, which gave Tepat QĆ“ntoq. Each time, the answer would be slightly different. Soon they pieced together that QĆ“yĆ»ntoq and QĆ“ntoq were the same, but not much else. All they could gather was that the QĆ“ntoq were still further out there, all the other barbarians were talking about them, many of them didnāt like them, and the tribe must be huge.
Finding out about the QƓntoq and preparing for an encounter with them became a priority of Tepatic geopolitics, as they had surmised this poorly understood nation could potentially be the most threatening northern tribe.
Klamen, the military officer who led several expeditions up the river deep into the prairie, reported that he never encountered them either, but still found people talking about them elsewhere, at the furthest extent of his journey.
Less scrupulous adventurers sometimes claimed to have encountered the tribe or even been captured by them, and wrote fantastical, contradictory travelogues of bullshit. Tepatic imagination went wild with them. They became a staple of Tepatic lang fiction, a standin for basically whatever the author wanted to put.
But they had already met the QƓntoq, many times. They were every other tribe that they had met.
Some scholars, reviewing the history, and noticing that no matter where they went, the QƓntoq were always just past them, became suspicious that they were legendary and they were talking about the ethnic equivalent of Bigfoot.
It took until a Tepatic scholar of barbarian heritage to realize that QĆ“ntoq was a corruption of the word āother people,ā and simply meant any other tribe, and not any group in particular. That was it.
So disappointing! But the word lives on to refer to a mirage, or imaginary threat.
Could I commission you to create a new conlang for me or would that be extremely expensive considering how famous you are?
I have no clue how to create one myself. I've tried for years and read books about it but I still can't figure it out.

Quick add-on for my 2C -- I bought this book after reading this post and watching a video about it that I think I have queued for tomorrow and it's so good. It really embraces the beginner and explains things thoroughly and in interesting ways. I'm not far into it at all but I'm far enough to say it's earned its shelf space and is well worth spending that kind of time and focus on.
Five (and possibly more ways) to utilize, develop, or increase native abilities are:

Education:Ā Enhance normal abilities through long and diligent training in special techniques
Analogy: people with normal attention spans increasing their powers of concentration by practicing meditation. Regular Joes jogging every day for a year to train for a marathon.
Symbiosis:Ā Cultivating relationships with symbiotic spiritual organisms
Analogy:Ā Trees can absorb nutrients so-so. By getting colonized by mycorrhizal fungi, they get that much better at it. Humans digest much better with bacteria in their intestines.
Alchemy:Ā Use of potions that stimulate various mental functions
Analogy:Ā People who trip on shrooms can perceive the world in new and totally different ways, that they would never realize sober
Technology:Ā Use of specially crafted tools or objects - magical ātechnologyā - which can do things mere humans canāt
Analogy:Ā People wearing watches instead of counting the minutes themselves
Swira depends on identifying people to whom #1 applies, and then pushing them into apprenticeship with a sorcerer, through which they encounter #2-4. However, even most ordinary people traditionally had some familiarity with those processes. Tepat in particular works almost entirely with #5.

Chichit or chicit /Ķ”tsʰiĖĶ”ts(ʰ)it/, or chitwoq /Ķ”tsʰitwÉŹ/ the oxpecker.
This bird customarily alights on all manner of large animals, including cattle. It is the animalās constant attendant, eating all the little bugs that dare land on it. And, however, occasionally sipping its blood.
Chitwoq is literally āpecks cattle.ā Chit, an otherwise little-used word for āpeck,ā refers primarily to these āpeckersā now, usually in the reduplicated form chichit. Also called thelchit (āpeckbirdā).
In feudal days, every rulerās entourage had a nebulous assortment of people: guards, magicians, scribes, generals, servants, and so on, managing various tasks. But many, perhaps the majority were the kind of people, often other nobles, who didnāt have a particular job. Some of the smarter ones might be āadvisorsā of sorts, with or without (more often without) specific portfolios, helping him make wise decisions. But often they were kind of just ⦠there. They might dine with the ruler or ride or hunt with him, but basically they were around the court in order to be around the court.
These amorphously functional(?) there-people were called āpeckersā - chichit. (Also called: yaqthĆ“y āone who is there, there-person.ā) Like the birds, sometimes they picked metaphorical bugs off the king. But they were also kind of parasitic, werenāt they?
Moving sideways: woq is also found in nitwoq āoxkillā and pyalwoq āox eventā which both basically mean ābarbecueā or just āpartyā nowadays, because cattle were valuable workers, and a peasant was unlikely to just eat them. There would be too much meat anyway; fish and ducks were much more common. If he did kill it, likely because it couldnāt work anymore, it was a big deal, and he would invite the neighbors to help eat it.

One of the peculiar customs of Tepat is the coming-of-age of young men.

Although there are many customs associated with rite-of-passage, which may or may not be done, or may be handled differently in different places, one of the most widespread and consistent is a ritual where the boy gets his first orgasm and ejaculation from the community.
Teenage boys are initiated into manhood by being brought to oragasm and ejaculation by an elder ā typically by an older woman or older women of the community, one not related to the boy(s).
The woman who did this was often called a tyum (< *ti- hand + -um feminine suffix - see the glyphs at the top of the post (2 variations)). The tyum could be no woman in particular, or a group of the elders of the community, or a particular woman might be given the role customarily; in the latter case it was common for this woman to also be the midwife, matchmaker, or shamaness.
(In case youāre wondering, passage-rites for young women are less common and well-developed, but one of the more common ones is for families to announce menarche by flying a red flag outside the house.)
When the boy came, the old woman/women would shout hurrah and the semen would be saved as a talisman for the boy when he grew older.
There was a lot of variation, and how it went on was often particular to the ways of the particular village. In old villages, this was often a big event ā all the boys of a certain age might go through it together. For several days each teenage boy would go through it one by one ā or possibly, all of them would be done together at the same time. Rarely, they were all done outside in public, with the teenage girls watching and cheering for them. However, it could also be done to each boy alone in private when he showed signs of puberty. This could make it difficult to perform, although the women who gave it were often skilled with their hands.
Itās worth noting that masturbation has long been considered taboo in Tepat. People are not supposed to do sexual stuff alone. The handjob ritual must be done before a kid learns this. It must be the first ejaculation they have. In fact, part of the reason for this is to socialize and communalize sexuality and prevent people from having their first experience alone and making it a habit. Boys are told if they masturbate, it will raise their blood pressure and heart rate dangerously and cause a heart attack (no mention is made of whether plain old sex will kill you). Additionally, it was believed that when the old woman touches him, she can āsenseā if a boy has done it before, and would report his misdeed to the village.
Obviously, thereās a lot of embarrassment potential. Nobody wants to be humiliated ā and really, most people donāt want to humiliate their friends and neighbors either, so it can be supposed deception was actually quite common. Silhen i-Tsyam was supposed to have failed to ejaculate, despite which his old woman lied and claimed he had, which he remembered as an early, formative experiences of human deceptiveness.
For the feudal elite, the old village woman could also be called in to the estate to do the lordās sons, or the household might hire a nanny and expect her to do it, although the nanny might also be an older serf. In towns, elites might also do the communal thing at an exclusive party for only their sons.
Still widespread in the Shattered Land, the custom has declined since then. Selkwit in her monograph (Y+247) elucidated several causes for the customās decline. Urbanization speeded decline of the practice. Increasing numbers of people moving to the cities (speeded by dislocation) severed communal ties and group cohesion ā although there were still institutions emerging for those who still wanted to keep the ancient ways. So while there was some decline, urbanization also led to the emergence of semi-professional specialist women. These were NOT prostitutes ā the type was an older, married woman with children, a āfertileā one, definitely not a virgin ā and one who had knowledge of sexual and womanly thing, who was wise and could teach. Her fertility would also, er, rub off on him. So they were often not exclusively handjobbers.
However, later parents questioned whether it actually encouraged boys to masturbate. Fellatio would be better, because people canāt do it to themselves, but this crossed the line for many, and many old women (and their husbands) who would be OK giving a handjob balked at giving a blowjob. So many families stopped doing this altogether. In late Conciliar times, the multicultural cities included many barbarians, East Coasters or Muqali who would not have undergone this either. However, there has been a neomovement in Conciliar times attempting to revive the custom, using informal parentsā associations for handjobs.
