INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE (2022-) | S03E05
80% of the season out now and we have:
- No Loustat
- No Lesmand
- No Loumand
- No Claudia flashbacks
- No proper telling of Lestat's human life
- Less than a minute of Magnus
- Less than 4 minutes of Nickistat
- Less than 4 minutes of Marius (who, by the way, never gave a shit about his beloved Amadeo and dismissively calls him "rotten" - how do you feel about that, fellow book readers?)
- Merely a crumb of Devil's Minion
But wait!!! You DO get a fuckload of Lestat fucking his mom, of Lestat hallucinating people, a nothingburger subplot with a Claudia doppelganger and Lestat's band getting high and having orgies! Just what all of us wanted from an adaptation of The Vampire Lestat, right?? RIGHT???!!! 😃🫠 (nervous breakdown incoming)

I've given it 5 episodes and at this point I think it's fair to say Lestat's band members are a fucking waste of time. This season only has 7 episodes total so why the everlasting FUCK are these four useless shitstains taking up screen time that could've gone to fleshing out Lestat's backstory, Louis' emotional turmoil, Armand's journey, or Daniel's transformational trauma? This is literally my only complaint about this season but it fills me with vitriol bc it affects the whole show.
I'm watching a vampire show for the vampire drama that's been building for 2 seasons; I don't care about these boring ass mortals unless there's an actual connection to the main characters. With Regina, there was an instant connection to Louis' grief. What the fuck do each of the band members bring that ties in to Lestat's emotional journey? What parallels do they draw to the events in Auvergne, to Paris, to Spain, to New Orleans? Did they, in any way, shape, or form, change the way Lestat reflects upon himself and his past? NO. IF YOU CUT OUT ALL THEIR SCENES NOTHING WOULD CHANGE.
Then why the fuck did we need to show every arduous minute of Lestat convincing them to accept him as a vampire? Why the fuck should I give a shit that whiny white boy #2 stomped off like a toddler? Why the fuck should I care if he relapses? Why the fuck did we need to see the entire tour bus encounter with the stupid cop?
JUST NARRATE IT AND MOVE ON SO WE CAN SEE MORE OF THE ACTUAL MAIN CHARACTER CONFLICT. THERE'S ONLY 7 EPS.
The lesmand and nickstat dynamics were SO condensed and they could've had more time to flesh them out if the stupid band just shut the fuck up. Or they could've done more plot relevant present day stuff with loustat and Armand's storyline with the great conversion. Literally anything other than the band would've served the story better and improved the pacing. Even the concert scenes would be much improved if the camera just stayed on Lestat's performance and not cut to the fuckass band.
Every millisecond on them is a waste of time, every frame a waste of space, and every spoken line a waste of oxygen. Their existence is a waste of the show's budget. The best thing they did was when larry killed himself because at least then I got to look at Armand. Good fucking riddance to an annoying pest. I only feel sorry for the subway staff that has to clean that shit up.
But now the remaining pests want to become vampires?? May Armand exterminate them all.
AND ANOTHER THING — I HATE that they were on after dark instead of eric and assad. Get these irrelevant dicksmears off my screen!!
It wasn't my love for Louis, Daniel.
it's actually a famously effective narrative technique they chose to use for the DM storyline, it's called Tell, Don't Show, Never fucking show them anything
I’m sorry but this is such a fundamental misunderstanding of Armand and Daniel both as characters and in their relationship. Armand doesn’t want to turn Daniel because he considers vampirism a curse. Daniel begs him for years. And the only thing that changes Armand’s mind is daniel quite literally dying under his eyes and him realising he prefers to literally throw aside everything he believed in his whole life to avoid the pain of death. It’s a selfish act and a surrender at once. What are they doing

INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE (2022-) | S03E05
Assad Zaman as Armand
i liked a few parts in ep 5 but overall my heart sinks with further disappointment every week. what did they do to my beautiful show. "it's lestat's pov so it's supposed to be different" can only explain away so much. at some point the show is just not good. it's painfully white, the pacing is trash, all the characters lack the depth they used to have, and if i didn't care about the characters so much i would've given up watching ages ago. if s4 is gonna be like this then i don't want it, which is a shame because the few minutes we got with sheila as akasha fills me with preemptive grief for the massive potential in yet another amazingly talented cast member that is about to be strangled by a shitty script
The Vampire Lestat (2026)
Why are you making such a fuss? It’s obvious that Armand hasn’t told the whole story yet and that there’s more to come.
If I would get a penny everytime someone says 'there is more to come' ... I know there is more to come but that doesn't change the quality of the writing. How they wrote their first encounter after the turning. The confession etc. Etc. I am glad you seem to enjoy it. But many others don't like what they did so far.

daniel after being turned by armand: well at least he can't read my mind to extract my worst moments as a punishment anymore
armand, who has spent the past 50 years studying daniel like a bug: i am about to recite your top ten personal failures from memory. i've made a tier list
Episode 5, and I don’t even have it in me to be angry anymore. I’m just tired. Random negative thoughts under the cut:
I’ve been thinking a lot about the first two seasons, how deeply the show made you feel not just for Louis but for every character, how clear they were on the story they were telling, and how every scene worked in service of that story.
This season, I don’t even really know what story they’re trying to tell.
The only parts for me that worked at all were the Louis/Claudia scenes, and that was due to Delainey and especially Jacob giving it their absolute all. It’s weird and dark and fucked up, and I understand people being dubious about giving this story to Louis. I am too, mainly because I’m just not sure if it’s going anywhere that would justify it. But it did make me feel something other than irritated, and it was the only part of the episode that did.
The Lestat Claudia of it all was affecting enough as long as you don’t think about it too hard. Because we STILL haven’t addressed his role in the trial, and until you do, sorry not going to feel anything for Lestat crooning a sad ballad for Claudia, especially not with Sam Barclay nodding along six feet away. Again, please tell me this is going somewhere. Sam and Delainey are also acting their hearts out, but it just rings hollow to me.
Speaking of, thank you Assad for shining in the five fucking minutes you got on screen, but even you couldn’t save this. The DM scene was so stiff and weird in execution and just dropped in out of nowhere. There’s no buildup, no emotional weight, no scaffolding to support it. It’s not developing these characters or their potential relationship at all. It’s just a few minutes of Armand telling us he’s in love with Daniel without showing or earning it in any way. Why does he love Daniel? Dunno. How and when did it happen? Who cares.
I don’t mind the lack of past DM, if that’s what they stick to. (Disclaimer: I like DM but am not a hard-core DM shipper by any means). Mostly because it’s present-day DM that I find most interesting. The idea of old Daniel, with all he knows about Armand, knowing the worst things that Armand has done, still falling in love with him is delicious to me. Because Armand performs and masks, he moulds himself into what he thinks people want, but here that’s pointless. It’s impossible. That could be an amazing arc.
Also, Assad has hinted in a couple of interviews that Armand did not realise he was in love with Daniel until during or after Dubai. Which I also find fascinating, potentially. Because there is of course a recurring pattern of Armand latching on to the outside force that blows up his life and this could be a means to explore that.
So if you’d told me before season three this was where they were going, I would have been quite happy with it. As it is, well, not so much. Firstly because I think this potential arc is complex, and needs a lot of screen time to work, and I just don’t believe they are willing to spend the necessary time and care on this relationship, or on Armand at all frankly. Secondly because one-sided past DM felt OK in my head in theory. But now it’s part of a season has been so ruthlessly committed to hammering home the idea that Armand is a pathetic loser pining for people who hate him, who despise him, who look down on him. Stupid ugly rag doll thinking he could possibly deserve love. And I hate it.
Meanwhile, Marius and Akasha was done well enough, but like everything else felt rushed and I have no idea what sense you would make of it as a casual viewer. Also, once again, the racial implications of Marius discarding Armand and recruiting blond blue-eyed Lestat as his apprentice are completely discarded. On the plus side, Sheila Atim absolutely delivered during the Akasha monologue, but on the other, great, yet another brilliant actor being absolutely wasted.
Briefly, what the hell was the I, Amel thing they slipped in? And fuck the implication that uwu innocent baby Lestat is only so violent because of Amel/Akasha. If that’s where they go, that would really be the last straw for me. But I can’t be bothered even speculating about it.
I know everyone keeps saying, wait, it will all make sense. I really struggle to see what they could do that would redeem it for me. I get that Lestat is avoiding the subjects he really needs to confront, and I hope we’ll get to it in the last couple of episodes. But even then I don’t think it would justify all the weirdness and the sheer waste of time in so much of these preceding episodes. So. Hanging on by my fingernails, but just really disappointed and deflated.
