As winter comes to an end, the snow starts melting and roads gradually reopen. The weather remains cool, especially during mornings and nights.

May – One of the Best Months to Visit

May offers pleasant weather, clear skies, and breathtaking views of the snow-capped Himalayas. It is one of the busiest months for Char Dham pilgrims.

Temperature: 8°C – 22°C

Best For: Families, senior citizens, and first-time visitors.

June – Peak Yatra Season

The weather stays comfortable during the day with cool evenings. Trekking routes remain fully accessible, making June another excellent month for the pilgrimage.

Temperature: 10°C – 24°C

Travel Tip: Book hotels and transportation well in advance due to heavy tourist crowds.

July – Monsoon Arrives

Rainfall begins across the Himalayan region, increasing the chances of landslides and road delays.

Temperature: 12°C – 20°C

Recommendation: Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall and always check weather updates.

August – Heavy Rainfall Continues

August brings lush green valleys but also slippery roads and unpredictable weather conditions.

Temperature: 12°C – 19°C

Although the scenery is beautiful, this month is generally not recommended for Char Dham Yatra.

September – Fresh, Green, and Pleasant

After the monsoon, the skies become clear and the mountains look incredibly fresh. Tourist crowds also begin to reduce.

October – Cool Weather & Clear Views

October offers crisp mountain air, pleasant days, and chilly nights. It's the final month before the temples close for winter.

November to March – Winter Closure

Heavy snowfall covers the Char Dham region during winter. The temples remain closed, and roads to higher elevations become inaccessible.

Next comes clothing, and layers are everything. I packed quick-dry T-shirts, thermal wear, a fleece jacket, and a waterproof outer shell. The temperatures can change dramatically, especially during the early mornings and evenings, so warm clothing is a must.

Good trekking shoes are probably the most important item on the list. Choose waterproof shoes with good grip and ankle support. Pair them with comfortable trekking socks, and don't forget a pair of lightweight slippers for relaxing at the campsite after a long day of hiking.

Don't underestimate the power of small essentials. Sunscreen, sunglasses, lip balm, gloves, a woollen cap, and a reusable water bottle made a huge difference during my trek. The mountain sun is stronger than it looks, even when the weather feels cool.

I also packed plenty of energy snacks like almonds, trail mix, chocolate, and protein bars. They were lifesavers during steep climbs when I needed a quick boost without stopping for a full meal.

A headlamp, power bank, and a small first-aid kit were always within easy reach in my backpack. Thankfully, I didn't need most of the medical supplies, but it's always better to be prepared in the mountains.

One thing I wish more trekkers remembered is to pack responsibly. Carry reusable bottles, avoid single-use plastics, and always bring a small garbage bag to carry your waste back with you. The Himalayas are beautiful because they're still wild—we all have a responsibility to keep them that way.

Evenings on the trek were unforgettable. Sitting around a warm campfire with fellow trekkers, sharing stories, sipping hot tea, and watching thousands of stars appear above the mountains felt surreal. There was no network, no notifications, and honestly... I didn't miss them at all.

One thing I loved about Har Ki Dun is that it doesn't feel overcrowded. Unlike many popular Himalayan destinations, the trails here are peaceful. You can actually hear the wind moving through the trees and the sound of rivers flowing beside the path.

The trek isn't just about beautiful views—it's also full of history and mythology. Locals believe this valley was part of the route taken by the Pandavas on their journey to heaven. Whether you believe the legend or not, the place has a peaceful energy that's difficult to describe.
