Hi, sorry if you already answered this, but what was the original story line for YR? Other than Simon getting murdered, do you know anything else? How did you find that information? I couldn't find anything when I searched lol. Thanks!
Hello!
The original plot was supposed to be similar to Riverdale and Elite where it started off with a murder and the story goes back a few months to reveal what really happened. Lisa mentioned it in this interview and explained it in this one as well. ๐
YR fanfic pet peeves (and corrections): latin america edition
so. i was originally going to post this in january as a kind of "new year, new opportunity to learn about simon's hispanic heritage" kind of a thing, but life got busy, and then my computer died and i lost my original list, so i've had to reconstruct this from memory as best as i could. there may be some stuff missing, so perhaps i'll just keep adding to this post as missing/new points come to mind.
disclaimer 1: if you've included any of the points made here on any fanfic of yours, please don't take this as a call-out. this isn't intended to shame anyone, but rather as an educational opportunity. it's very rare that a latin american nationality that is not mexican or colombian or puerto rican is showcased in an international show, especially outside of the US, and it's given me such joy to have all of you lovely folks make the effort to be open to and research and understand the idiosyncrasies of simon's (and omar's) heritage because the rest of latin america tends to go overlooked in most other fandoms. so i don't intend to scold anyone with this. we can't all know everything about every other culture-- lord knows i don't know everything about sweden, but i want to be respectful to the country and its people and that is why i heavily research anything i don't know and ask people who do know when my research doesn't quite cover it and am open to corrections when even that falls short. i expect most of you come to write about simon's family background in good faith and also want to be respectful to his family's culture, and so i thought i might make things a bit easier for you all by putting the most common errors/misunderstandings i've seen in one handy post. but once again, it's not a call-out, i don't get offended by these things, and i'm in no way implying, if you've done any of these things in fic or in life, that you are a bad person. i understand people make mistakes when they don't know things.
disclaimer 2: i am not venezuelan myself. i was born and raised in the same general region of latin america, though, and i have venezuelan friends and have worked with venezuelan people and have visited venezuela. generally speaking, i feel their culture is very similar to mine (though our spanish is much closer to spanglish than theirs is, haha xD) and feel a deep kinship with them. but of course, i'm no native, and if you're venezuelan and catch anything here that you feel is incorrect, feel free to point it out and i'll add a correction in your name.
warning: this is very long. christ almighty. DX if you can't make it to the end, tl;dr-- feel free to ask if you have any questions or if anything isn't clear. my ask box/messages are always open.
Just a small correction:ย
7b-ย In Sweden you have a right to have classes on your native language: If one or both of your legal guardians have a native language that is not swedish, the language is the one most spoken at home, and the student has a basic proficiency in it.
The possibility to do so might be impacted by if enough people want to study the language, and if there is a teacher who can teach the language. But since spanish is a subject that most high schools in Sweden offer, Simon could definitely choose to study spanish at Hillerska.ย
that's interesting-- i'm not sure we're talking about the same thing, though, and i just want to be certain i'm getting this right so i can correct the post. 'cause the way i'm parsing this, why would he be taught spanish if he's already proficient at it? seems a bit unfair to the other students in the class who are legit learning a new language, maybe?
i guess that's the distinction i was trying to make but am not sure if i managed to explain it correctly. i took "spanish" classes every year of my schooling from kindergarten to twelfth grade. but those classes weren't teaching me how to speak spanish; they were classes where we learned about spanish-language literature or where we were taught the rules of spanish grammar and syntax (which we already were applying because we already spoke spanish; we just weren't explicitly aware of the rules). those classes would've been fine for me to take in college, for example, if i had done a spanish language major or minor. but i wouldn't be allowed to take a class teaching me how to speak spanish because i already spoke spanish and would have an unfair advantage over the other students who were learning the language from scratch. like... the kind of thing you would learn on a duolingo spanish course. that would be pointless for me to take, because i already speak spanish. does that make sense?
so i guess the question is: what KIND of spanish classes would simon be allowed to take in high school? is it the latter or the former?
(i love this discussion btw. it's one of my favorite things about this fandom-- i learn so much!)
What an amazingly interesting and educational post! A wonderful resource for fanfic writers and readers and language nerds alike.
The question of language classes was already cleared up, but I wanted to write out that the same difference between classes in native languageย (where you already have at least some knowledge of it, learn about culture and literature, and delve deeper into the grammar etc.) and foreign languages (where you learn a new language) does exist in Sweden.
Simon is allowed to take either (sources in Swedish: this pageย about languages at gymnasieskola, or this one about the right to learn oneโs native language).
The only limitation is that he will only be able to take Spanish as a native language if there are at least five kids in total who are entitled to those classes and want to take them (this requirement doesnโt apply to the official minority languages, but Spanish isnโt one of those). Furthermore, there must be a teacher available who can teach Spanish as a native language.
Anyway, I assume there might not be four others at Hillerska who want to take Spanish as a native language, but Simon can still take it as a foreign language. The most commonly offered foreign languages in addition to the obligatory English are German, French, and Spanish so itโs definitely available.
this is FASCINATING! :D
first off, thank you so much for explaining the native/foreign divide-- that's basically the distinction i was TRYING to make, but i didn't have the terminology to articulate it as clearly as you did. now it makes much more sense, lol.
that said, it's still mindblowing to me that he's allowed to take both?(provided, of course, that there's enough people interested in the "native" class). 'cause if i'm getting this right, on my side of the pond, i would've been allowed to take the "native" classes (duh) but absolutely NOT the "foreign" ones. like, for example, this is from the general bulletin at the US university where i did my (...first...) undergrad:
note that the elementary through intermediate language classes, which are the ones that would be teaching you to actually SPEAK the language (so i'm guessing the equivalent to the "foreign language" classes in the swedish system), may not be taken by native speakers of the language. this is true not just for spanish, but for most languages.
so if i were doing a spanish language major - if i understand this correctly (and granted, i may not be understanding it correctly because i didn't do a spanish major myself... i was in engineering) - i would have to take a placement test, pass those four levels, and then i'd get the credit needed to move on to the 3000-level classes, which are definitely "native" type classes in the sense that you're studying grammar/syntax and cultural stuff, and you definitely need to already have an intermediate grasp of spanish to even be able to participate in the class. i wasn't a spanish-language major, and i wasn't allowed to do a spanish minor either, because that one involves only the basic/intermediate classes. so i just never took any spanish classes (i did french... not for a minor, though. just because i wanted to learn french.)
looking at the descriptions, i believe simon would've been able to take the bilingual/heritage speakers classes which are more of a "native" type of class (i don't think i would've been allowed? but i'm not 100% sure about that), but he definitely wouldn't have been allowed to take the basic/intermediate classes which are more the "foreign" kind, where they teach you how to SPEAK the language rather than the deeper intricacies of it.
i believe in US high schools the situation is much the same (please correct me if i'm wrong!). in my country the only foreign language taught in most schools is english, so this isn't as much of an issue (if your kid is bilingual you'd just send them to an english-language school, most likely). i expect for any other languages, bilingual kids would be given some sort of exemption for any "foreign" classes of their non-spanish native language, but i'm not sure. i've never really asked. but i know that in most cases, if you want to learn a foreign language, those are classes taken outside the school system - like, i could've taken french classes while i was in high school, but i would've taken them at a french academy alongside people of all ages.
ANYWAY, my point is not to say that either system is better or anything, but just to highlight how interesting i find these differences. i had absolutely no idea this was a thing! it's amazing. i don't know that i would've taken any spanish classes even if i had lived in europe, but it's really cool to learn about it.
(sorry this is so long. i get really excited about the things i find interesting. i'm a nerd. xD)
Editing my fics rn. Thank you for this, it's very helpful. ๐
happy birthday mady!๐ Hope you're having an amazing day and eating lots of delicious food!โจ
Hello!
It actually has been an amazing day โบ๏ธ Thank you so much ๐๐๐
Hey just popping in to say I just finished TDLP and absolutely loved it. What a journey! I started reading it as you were releasing the chapters but abandoned roughly half-way and decided to wait until it's finished and it was worth it. I got so invested I stayed up way too late last night to finish it- I couldn't put it down. And maaaan the ending. I did not see that coming ๐ณ thank you for this sick and disturbing journey, it was the best ๐
Hello!
The ending was so fun to write. It was one of the things I always knew at the beginning and it felt so satisfying to finally write it and especially post it. I'm glad you liked the fic (and I hope you get some sleep hahaha)
Thank you ๐

Wow! Ngl I waited all these months so I could binge read TDLP all at once and boy I was not disappointed. That was a wild ride and I LOVED every second of it. I'm such a fan of non linear storytelling. Revealing certain information at certain times for a more dramatic narrative. And you did exactly that! Inserting brief moments from each of the characters leaving the reader more and more intrigued with every chapter. I cannot express how well written and creative this fic was. It actually didn't feel like a fic at times, it felt like a real murder mystery!! Like I could see it like a Netflix special or something, like I'd watch the hell out of that! Anyway, I wanted to congratulate you on this fic and all of your other fics (love them as well) and give you a huge thanks and some hugs for your writing and your storytelling. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to read more from you in the future! You will be forever a03 subscribed!! ๐
Hello!
I'm seeing so many new readers ever since I posted the last chapter; I guess a lot of you really wanted the complete work hahaha I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
I'm a huge fan of non-linear storytelling as well. I got the idea of different characters recounting the same event from Knives Out (love that movie) and thought it's such a nice technique to use for a murder-mystery, especially for TDLP where I wanted all the characters to be as suspicious as possible while remaining true to their personal accounts.
Thank you so much for your words! It's been so fun writing and sharing this with you all ๐
wow mady, the thread on twt was amazing, thank you so much for letting us know the little details about the story. that 80s playlist revelation blew my mind, that's just genius wtfff i would've never figured that out! that's so cool! i also really liked the fact that you used dates that are important to you in the fic. that's so sweet!
overall it's so refreshing to see how the story had developed, to see the notes you've written during earlier stages and how you've sorted out the plot later. you had said that your favourite povs to write were erik's and Wille's, and i gotta say i enjoyed reading their povs the most as well, specially erik's. he was such a complex character and i was struggling to understand him so i loved getting insight about him. thank you for sharing those facts with us! I really enjoyed going through that thread!๐๐
I'm a little curious will there be like spin-off fics based on tdlp? maybe other povs or other scenes that you haven't included in the main story?
Hello!
I've had that thread in my drafts for weeks ๐ญ I'm glad to finally share it, I love to talk about the writing process and all the little details.
Btw I just want to thank you for your amazing edits and messages. You've been such a gem and I really appreciate all the love you've given me and this fic. ๐
As for your questionโ I don't know. I do think TDLP has the best spin-off potential among all my fics, but personally I think the story is concluded for now.
Sending you lots of love ๐
I really want to read your new fic which people called murder fic? But I'm struggling with mental health, and have tendency to hurt myself. Will it safe for me to read it? Thanks
Hello!
Yeah, people started calling it the murder fic because it's essentially a murder-mystery. It has a lot of heavy themes, and that includes self-harm. I've put a content and trigger warning for every chapter so you can be prepared for what you're about to read, but then again warnings can only do so much. I think if you're not in a good place mentally, it's better not to read it yet. Your health and well-being is more important than any fic.
Thank you for the ask and I hope you always have good days ๐
I loved reading TDLP so much. What a wonderful deranged ride it was. Thank you.
Hello!
Thank you as well! I'm glad to have shared that experience with you readers. You're all awesome ๐
just finished reading the final chapter of tdlp and mady, what a journeyโฆ what a fucking journey. i just spent a good fifteen minutes blasting "every breath you take" and bawling my eyes out. I can't believe we've finally reached the end.
it honestly feels like i just finished watching a whole new crime series, every scene that you had written literally played in front of my eyes. tdlp is and will always be one of my favourite fics, the amount of tension and suspense really had me postponing my plans because i couldn't go through my day knowing there was a new update. I just had to finish reading it first.ย
if i start speaking about your writing technique you won't see the end of it, the visual imagery, the symbolism??
"When the queen is captured, you always think the game is over. Checkmate. Itโs done. No one pays much attention to the pawns, and before you know it theyโve gone across the board and become queen.โ
I just let out a guttural scream at the part. So sooooo good I am rendered speechless.
Wilhelm's revenge on Erik was so satisfying, pretty gorey and grotesque, i almost threw up, but still so good.ย
I know almost all the characters are morally corrupt but I still love the characterization of each of them. I really don't know whether any other work will ever make me feel the thrill i felt while reading each chapter. It's so hauntingly unique and intriguing. Just so captivating.ย ย
can't wait to go through the whole fic again to read those little clues you left here and there and see how everything fits into place perfectly. (the royal family in tdlp universe is going to be in shambles now that both princes are gone and i can't stop thinking about how insane the investigation of the crown prince's death will be wow-)
Thank you for writing it! I can't say it enough! your consistency and the amount of research you've done for the fic is insane. If i could just turn back time and go back to the day I first found your fic I would do it in a heartbeat. congratulations on completing this masterpiece, I am definitely not covered in snot and tears while typing this I am definitely not sad that it ended. but finally, all the puzzle pieces are in order. I've had my fill. I can die happily now.
I also made two covers for you as a little congratulatory gift, hope you like them!๐ you're amazing๐
Hello!
First of all, thank you so much for all the love you've shown TDLP. Your messages and edits are so incredible, and as an author it's such an honor to have my story inspire such creativeness. Honestly, you're so talented!
Don't worry about sending long messages/asks like this because believe me, it really makes our day. To see someone so invested in the story is wonderful and really keeps us motivated as writers. I love hearing all of your thoughts, especially for a fic like this where mystery and suspense are the core themes.
TDLP is probably the most exhausting fic I've ever written because of the amount of research and organization that I had to apply, but it's also the most fulfilling! There was a certain sense of accomplishment after I posted the last chapter. I'm so glad to have shared this journey with you!
(PS. I will be posting a little thread on twt about the fic, so you can check it out if you want ๐)
Thank you so much and you're amazing too ๐๐๐

Heyy!
Who tells the truth in the reconciliation part of simon and wille on november 1st? Wilhelm or Sara?
Hello!
I'd say most of the truth is from Wille's POV. Sara's fear is real and her thought process reflects that, but it isn't as violent as she'd recalled. Do with that as you will.
Thank you for reading the fic! So glad you sticked until the end ๐
Hurrah it's finished!
Yes! It was an exhausting but fulfilling writing project. I'm so glad to have shared it with all of you.
Thank you ๐
We're finally here! The last chapter of The Darkest Little Paradise is now on ao3.
Thank you so much to everyone who has read and loved this fic. I really appreciate you all! Answering the messages and asks I got has been amazing. You really helped keep me motivated. ๐
Hope you enjoy the final chapter!
if you had to pick one quote from tdlp what would you pick?
Hi!
This is difficult, but I really like this one from Sara in Chapter 2. It goes:
"Wilhelmโs love is never in doubtโ itโs the lengths heโll go to keep it that terrifies Sara to no end."
It's a statement that on the surface level points out Wille's crazy-in-love attitude and obsessive behavior, but you can actually say it's the theme that permeates most of the story and even alludes to the ending.
And I know you said to pick only one, but I also like this line from Chapter 18, in August's POV:
"It was fun playing hide-and-seek, giggling as they lock themselves up in a closet so their nannies canโt find them. Now that heโs grown he keeps the closet locked for a different reason: itโs chock full of skeletons."
How about you? Do you have any quotes that you liked in the fic?
Thank you for the ask! ๐
Here's Chapter 19! We're so close to the end ๐ญ

this is so fucking random mady but i just saw this edit on twt and immediately thought of you. I feel like you'd write the most skin crawling, nightmare fuel, terrifying survival horror stories๐ and i would ABSOLUTELY eat it up- i also wanna know, are you a fan of horror?
https://twitter.com/yrkitc/status/1666426080801046529?t=rN7sWLgHfLdjsfEjRYNpXg&s=19
Hello!
This edit is amazing, a 10/10. Thank you for sending it my way!
I won't say I'm a fan of horror as I've only watched a few films and shows of that genre. It's mostly because more of the popular ones are gory and I don't like that kind of stuff. I can read the most gruseome and disgusting things, even write them as you can see from my fic, but I can't bring myself to watch it. I don't know why, but that's how it is. Hahaha. I do love mystery though, and a lot of those contain psychological and sometimes even supernatural aspects of horror, so I suppose that counts?
I do like writing horror very much. TDLP might be the closest thing to it that I've published, but I have written original stories and other fics before that contain actual horror tropes. I don't know if I'll ever write one for YR though. I guess we'll see.
Thank you for the ask! ๐
Chapter 18 is now on ao3!
