The Harrington mansion is always dark.
Steve never really noticed it when he was growing up, not until he started dropping off Dustin and the kids. No matter how late it is, there's always a light on the porch for them. Like a sign that someone is waiting home for them.
It doesn't matter if his parents are out of town or not, it's always dark in the house. His parents doesn't care enough to leave a light for him. He won't leave it on for himself, because that feels pathetic.
Steve forgets about it, there's so many other things he should worry about.
He forgets about it until he starts dating Eddie Munson the summer of '85. Steve thanks the blue Scoops Ahoy shorts and the Corroded Coffin members for letting Eddie come in to the shop everyday for the whole summer until they finally start dating and making out at the parking lot.
Eddie starts hanging around Steve's house. Every night that Eddie stays at his house, Steve comes home to a house with a light on the porch.
The first time he notices it, he sat on his car crying for 30 minutes before finally caving in and entering the house. When Steve tells Eddie about this, Eddie visibly melts, scooping him into a hug before saying, "Oh sweetheart, as long as I am here, there's always going to be a light left on for you."
It's Eddie that makes the house a home. Steve doesn't care if he's living in a cardboard box, as long as he's with Eddie, it's home.
And that's why Steve's been standing in front of the dark porch for almost an hour now. Nancy's going to pick him up in a few more hours, so they can go back to the hospital and watch Max and Dustin.
But he can'tâ can't push himself to enter the dark house, knowing that Eddie's light and warmth is never going to touch it again. There's still blood stained on his hands, blood from when he had to leave Eddie's lifeless body in the Upside Down.
Steve wondersâ morbidlyâ if Wayne has a light on in the trailer porch, waiting for a son that's never coming home.
Maybe it's weariness or maybe Steve just wants to peek inside and see if there's still a hint of Eddie floating around the house. Steve lets himself in the dark house, sliding down against the door as he sobs into Eddie's battle vest.
Outside, the porch light flickers. It blinks three times.
Rapidly. Slowly. Rapidly.
The flickering stops and the light stays on.
Because as long as Eddie Munson's alive, there's always going to be a light left on for Steve Harrington.

Hen: what are you drinking?
Eddie: vodka
Hen: straight?
Eddie, sitting on bucks lap: no, gay.

nice and cozy â¤ď¸
Steve was flipping through a magazine on Eddieâs bed when the thought came to him.
He looked over at Eddie where he was sitting cross-legged on the floor playing around on his guitar. Heâd been working out some part of a song while Steve half-listened. He said Steve âhelped him think,â whatever that meant.
Steve had realized he didnât know Eddieâs name. Or at least, what it was short for. Heâd become quite close with the older boy since the spring, since he carried his lifeless body out of the upside down, since El closed the gate and burned Vecna and the entire second world to the ground.
Steve didnât quite understand how he felt about Eddie yet. He knew he really liked him, felt drawn to him, enjoyed his presence, his personality, his appearance.
Okay so maybe Steve knew more than he was willing to admit to himself.
Eddieâs guitar made an unsatisfactory noise and Eddie shook his head, rubbed his forehead in frustration, and looked up at Steve. He smirked when he saw Steve already looking back, and raised an eyebrow. âCan I help you?â
Steve rolled his eyes, letting the snark roll off his back. âYeah, actually. Iâve been wondering something.â
Eddie raised both eyebrows this time. âOh? I never pegged you as the curious type.â
âAlright, keep the sass to yourself, Munson.â
Eddie threw his head back and laughed, his curls falling behind his shoulders to expose his long neck.
Focus, Steve.
âWhatâs Eddie short for?â
Eddieâs light smile turned into a wolfish grin. âTrying to fill out the marriage license?â
Steve groaned and threw the magazine at Eddie, hitting him on the knee.
âWhoa whoa Steve, watch the baby.â
âSee youâre clearly already married to that stupid guitar.â
Eddie gasped theatrically, folding himself around the guitar as if to protect it from harm. âHe doesnât mean that dear, youâre a very smart guitar.â
âBoooooooâ
Eddie almost fell backwards with laughter. Steve couldnât help but giggle a bit himself, charmed by Eddie being so proud of his own joke.
âEddie.â
âSteve.â
âYou avoided the question.â
Eddie chuckled, resting his forearms on the guitar. âClever boy.â
Steve would be lying if he said his breath didnât catch, if his heartbeat didnât quicken, his entire body didnât feel a bit warmer.
Yes, Steve would continue lying for today.
He shook his head. âEddie. Just tell me. Is it embarrassing?â
Eddie smiled up at Steve, revealing nothing. âAbsolutely not.â
âThen why wonât you tell me?â
âNow where is the mystery in that?â
Steve groaned again and fell back on the bed. âYouâre so difficult. You know that?â
Eddie threw the magazine back at Steve. âIâve been told a few times.â
â
Movie night at Steveâs, waiting for Robin to return with her popcorn:
âEdward?â
Eddie let out a sharp laugh. âNo.â
â
Family Video, rewinding tapes while Eddie sewed a W.A.S.P. patch onto his new, non-blood-stained battle vest:
âEdison?â
Eddie recoiled. âWhat? Oh. No.â
â
Picking up the rugrats from Hellfire, leaning on Eddieâs van:
âEdmund?â
âSteve. Gross. No.â
â
Laying on the hood of Steveâs car at Loverâs Lake, stoned and looking up at the stars:
âEdwise?â
âWhat?â
âEdwise? Edwise Gamgee?â
Eddie cackled out into the night sky, echoes of his joy calling back at them from the trees. âOkay, who gave you access to Lord of the Rings?â
Steve shrugged. âI had to call in backup.â
Eddie rolled onto his side to face Steve, propping up his head on his hand. âYou asked the kids what my name was?â
âYeah.â
âAnd the best thing those little geniuses could come up with was goddamn Edwise Gamgee???â
Steve giggled. âTheyâre such nerds.â
âAbsolute fucking losers, Harrington.â
They both laughed until they were out of breath, panting out steam in the fall Indiana night.
âNo but seriously, Eddie? What is it?â
Eddie sighed, straining a smile as he stared up at the night sky. âItâs pretty fucking lame.â
âLamer than Edwise Gamgee??â
That made Eddie giggle again. âNo, I guess not.â
They sat in silence a moment, Steve patiently waiting, and Eddie gathering courage.
âItâs just Eddie.â
Steve turned to look at Eddieâs profile. He was beautiful in the cool near-darkness, the moon hitting his face at just the right angle to sharpen his features.
âJust Eddie?â
Eddie nodded. âJust Eddie. Nothing special or interesting or exciting. Itâs just plain, boring old Eddie.â
Steve blinked.
Steve blinked again.
And before Steve knew it, he was taking Eddieâs hand in his own.
Eddieâs breath caught and he continued to look up at the sky, too afraid to meet Steveâs eyes.
âEddie. I hate to break this to you, but I am pretty sure you are physically incapable of being boring.â
Eddie snickered and stopped himself.
âI mean it. You might be the craziest person Iâve ever met. You refuse to fit in to a box youâve outgrown. Youâre too goddamn stubborn to do what people expect of you. You stand up for yourself and people who need you. Youâre kind and gentle with the people you love.â
Steve took Eddieâs cheek with the hand not holding his and turned Eddie to face him. âYou are the most exciting, interesting, and special person Iâve ever met.â
And with that, Eddie had heard enough.
Eddie kissed Steve.
And Eddie did not stop kissing Steve until he was bent over him, knees straddling his waist and hands in his hair.
Steve gripped Eddieâs hips and pushed him back, pausing to catch his breath. Eddie panted above him and laughed down at him, his lips reddened and his eyes blown wide. He looked absolutely insane. Absolutely gorgeous.
âHey Eds?â
âYeah, Steve?â
âYou never asked me what Steve was short for.â
Eddieâs eyes narrowed. âWhat is Steve short for?â
Steve panted a light laugh. âItâs just Steve.â
Eddie paused.
And Eddie laughed.
And Eddie couldnât stop laughing for a very long time.
â
The next year, Eddie signed a Valentine card âTo: Just Steve.â and âLove: Just Eddie.â
â
That winter, Steve arranged restaurant reservations under the name of âJust Eddieâ
â
The following summer, Eddie got down on one knee and asked âJust Steveâ to marry him, and when Steve asked âWhat about the law?â Eddie said âitâs Just the law.â
â
The spring after, Steve read his vows in front of his entire chosen family. His voice faltered as he said âYouâre Just Eddie the way the sun is Just a star. The way the moon is Just a rock. The way the earth is Just a planet. You are my home. You are where I belong.â
Three years after Steve carried Eddie out of the Upside Down, Eddie carried Steve across the threshold of their tiny apartment in Indianapolis.

Ao3 extended version
âMy, my, are my eyes deceiving me? Steve Harrington himself has graced these sinful halls?â
Instead of a sneer Eddieâs been expecting, Steveâs face lights up with a smile. He lifts his hand to wave at him with much more enthusiasm than expected. Which is⌠weird since they have maybe talked once when the guy picked up Eddieâs new freshmen from Hellfire. Well, almost as weird as meeting a Harington in a gay bar itself.Â
âMunson, hi!â
A little dumb-founded, Eddie waves back weakly, his eyes catching the sight of Robin Buckley at the bar behind them. Ah, so thereâs the reason Harringtonâs here.
âYouâre here as an ally, I presume.â
âUhm, yeah I guess so?â Steve pouts, confused, before smiling again. âYou too, then?â
âSure, letâs say that.â
âHey, you should sit with us,â Harrington grins as if thatâs actually a good idea. Before Eddie manages to think of an excuse, heâs being dragged towards Buckley by the sleeve. âCome on.â
âMunson,â Robin nods at him in greeting, something akin to a mischievous smirk on her face. Why, he doesnât begin to understand.Â
âYou look good, by the way,â a deep voice whispers into his ear as they set off towards the tables and Eddie has to do everything for his soul not to leave his body. Steve⌠is being way friendlier than expected. But thatâs what it is, he has to remind himself before it gets too dangerous, just guys being dudes.
The âusâ in question turns out to be more than just the bizarre Harrington-and-Buckley duo. Thereâs Nancy Wheeler, Jonathan Byers and some tall guy with the best hair heâs seen, not counting Harrington of course, bless his hair-sprayed soul. They donât seem all that surprised heâs here at all which - fair enough, but also that heâs here at this table and that he doesnât know how to explain. Nancy Wheeler, though, ever the enigma keeps shooting him loaded glances. Heâs pretty sure she sniffed out his embarrassing crush on, ugh, Steve Harrington and sheâs- Jealous maybe? Probably? As if there is a universe where he, Eddie Munson, poses a threat to someone like Nancy fucking Wheeler.Â
Steve sits himself closest to Eddie, maybe because heâs feeling guilty - as he should be - about throwing him into a table full of basically-strangers or maybe for a different, Harrington-unexplainable reason. The point is, heâs close, Eddie can smell his aftershave and cigarettes and itâs the best and worst thing thatâs happened to him.Â
He keeps talking, too, asking Eddie questions about DnD (and isnât that a head-scratcher in itself) and what conditioner heâs using because he really likes his hair (as if Steve wasnât the embodiment of every shampoo commercial ever made). The gin-and-tonic Eddieâs been sipping mustâve been stronger than he thought because he swears he hears Steve saying something like âI donât know, I think youâre really prettyâ at one point.Â
Eddie is starting to wonder if Harrington, perhaps, has been replaced with a pod person.
Thereâs a few more attempts at small talk from Steve but Eddieâs too confused and trying so hard to not be hopeful because a second edition of a pathetic crush on a straight dude (Steve, his mind supplies helpfully) is going to be too painful. Harrington seems kind of down afterwards, sliding off his chair and towards the bar which leaves Eddie with an infamous Buckley glare. Followed by an aggravating assault to his shin.Â
âOw, Jesus, what the fuck is your problem?â
âMy problem?â Robin is quick to retort. âWhatâs your problem? I thought you had a crush on him! Itâs frankly kind of fucking obvious.â
Okay, whoa, rude.Â
âI donât,â Eddie sneers back but falters when she levels him with a blank stare. âFine, I do. Whatever. Way to kick a man when heâs down.â
âDingus, heâs been all over you for the last hour. Heâs been flirting like crazy and you, for some reason, keep shooting him down, what the hell?â
âBut-â But heâs straight. Right? He turns to see Steve at the bar and - oh, thereâs some guy with curly hair touching Steveâs arm and Steveâs smiling and blushing and- âWhat?â
That wonât do.
âGo get your man,â Robin says, practically shoving him off his stool to emphasize her point. Eddie scrambles from the floor, ignores the intense looks from the rest of the table and marches towards the bar.
âIâm coming, Stevie.â
